Harry Potter Brings Magic to Book Publishing

The New York Times reportsthat a Book Industry Study Group report, being released today, found that 2005 book sales were up by 5.9% at $34.6 billion (USD). The "strongest growth niches" were juvenile books, religious books and elementary and high school textbooks.
"The children's book segment was driven largely by the publication last year of the sixth volume in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which, according to its publisher, Scholastic, sold 11 million copies in the United States during its first nine weeks in bookstores alone."

Muggles Find Arthur Weasley's Missing Car ;)

Last fall we reportedthat Arthur Weasley, well known collector of Muggle artifacts, had his beloved Ford Anglia car stolen from a film studio lot. This crime has gone unresolved until now, as the enchanted vehicle has mysteriously turned up outside a magical fortress, or in Muggle terminology, Carn Brea Castle. The Scotsmanreportsthat an anonymous call led them to the location of the missing car in Falmouth, Cornwall.

" The Ford Anglia, registration 7990 TD, is pictured on the front cover of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Its magical properties are triggered by a silver button on its dashboard and, as well as flying, it has a Tardis-like expanding interior.
...

Carn Brea Castle, where the car was found, bears a striking resemblance to the Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft which features in the Harry Potter books. "

No word if Ministry of Magic officials helped in the recovery, or when Arthur will return the car back to its proper home in the Burrow.

Da Vinci overtakes Potter in top searches

The film interpretation of Dan Brown's best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code, has overtaken Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the most searched-for film in the UK. The last film to accomplish this feat was Star Wars Episode III, shortly before its release last May. The Da Vinci Code hit theaters yesterday.

Interview with Harry Potter video operator

Netribution has an interesting interview with David Hartley, who has been the video operator on all of the Harry Potter films to date. Hartley had the following to say about his role with the movies:

On Potter I'm a video operator. The job essentially requires acting as an intermediary between camera and director. I take a video feed from the camera record it and play it out onto the directors monitors. I also do a lot of editing on the floor using final cut pro so that the director can see whether the sequence is working straight away. I do see what we shoot as we shoot it and can often be the first person to make creative decisions about how to cut it, even if my cut isn't followed by the editor.

He discusses HP more indepth in the full interview, which you can read here.

due to copyright issues I can't post the interview transcript here.... you'll have to read it at their website only..

Followup: Stolen Ford Anglia found at castle

Last October, the flying Ford Anglia used in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was mysteriously stolen from Southwest Film Studios in St. Agnes. On Wednesday the stolen car turned up at Carn Brea Castle, a 14th-century stone twin-towered fortress near Falmouth, Cornwall.

Police chief Tim Roberts had this to say about this discovery of the car:

"It seems we have now located the Harry Potter car.... We received an anonymous call from someone telling us its location, and it was found in the early evening in an empty car park at Carn Brea Castle.... It seems to be in good order. I would guess whoever left it there did so with their tongue firmly in their cheek. The car had been there less than 24 hours and has now been towed away to a vehicle compound.... No arrests have been made, and the car will probably go back to the insurance company."

Forensics analysts say that the key to solving the crime could lie in a length of rope that was attached to the back of the vehicle, which may contain DNA.

Follow-up: A letter from Jo

Yesterday, we posted a letter a MuggleNet visitor had received from JK Rowling. The letter contained numerous bits of information concerning rumors and the title of Book 7. JK Rowling's agent confirmed for us that the letter was genuine, but they requested that we take it down to maintain the privacy of its contents.

We thank Ryan for providing us with the letter, and we apologize that we could not release it.
