17. DESPERATION
Maan helped Geet to her room before leaving for KC. At the door he turned back. "Thank you for today, Geet. I meant what I said to the doctor. I'm the baby's father...she will be my daughter!"
With a smile, he moved out of sight, not realizing the impact his claim could have on Geet. Geet touched her stomach as Maan's words echoed "...she will be my daughter." Maan sir's daughter...Maan sir's ...Maan sir's and...and Sameera's. Shudn't she be happy? Her child would have a great father...Maan sir would be a great father...and Sameera would be a good mother, too...but what about ...what about me? Who am I? "..my baby!" she whispered, caressing her child, ...then pressed a hand to her lips to stop their trembling. ...no not any more...babaji what have I done!...i promised to give up my child...but how can, I? I never knew he would mean so much to me...that I would love him so much...he is all I have...he is my flesh and blood... a part of me...how can I give him up? I would rather die!!
She fell down on the bed and hugged her middle...babaji you know I never realized...no ...no , Tara told I could be with my baby...that she would accept it ...that I could be with him until...but...but Tara is dead!
There was nothing she could do if they decided they didn't want her to be around...that they didn't need her anymore...but Maan sir cared about her...or did he? May be he just wanted the baby to be safe and happy...she remembered his reassurances...his touch...dancing together...no he did care about her...but he danced with Sameera too...they were going to get married...but he was kind to her...he wouldn't take her baby away...and Daadi...Daadi loved her...but why would they feel for her when her own family betrayed her?...no she didn't want to remember... not today when she should be happy...she saw the first image of her baby...he was so wonderful...she pushed back the memories that threatened to invade with the image of her baby...her baby, kicking and flipping around...so tiny, that he was secreted inside her stomach...she caressed her baby again and whispered, "mamma loves you baby...mamma loves you so much!"
At the dinner dadi saw that Geet was a bit gloomy and withdrawn. She had noticed that Geet seemed sad when she saw her in the noon. But then thought it might just be her imagination, seeing the way Geet sparkled while talking about the scan. Now, she saw that Geet was not eating her food but just pushing it around in her plate. Maan on the other hand seemed to be in an excellent mood. When he repeatedly addressed the baby as 'her' or 'she' Daadi asked if they had asked the doctor about the baby's gender.
"No Daadi. I know you wish for a boy, but it is just that when I saw the baby I had a feeling that it is a girl."
Daadi looked at Geet again, who seemed immersed in her own world.
"What do you wish for Geet?" Daadi asked bringing Geet's attention back. "Eh?"
"What do you think Geet? Is the baby a boy or a girl? Maan is sure the baby is a girl!"
The words drew Geet's eyes to Maan, who was looking at her expectantly.
"I.. I haven't thought about ..." Geet said, stealing eyes. "I just want this baby to be safe and healthy. Daadi, I'm feeling a bit tired. Would you mind if I go to my room, now?"
"Alright beta, I'll send the milk along."
Instead of Nakul, Daadi herself took the glass of milk to Geet. She waited until Geet emptied the glass with a grimace before asking, "Geet, are you alright beta? I've been watching you. You look sad, is something wrong?"
"No Daadi, I'm just tired.
"If that is the case, then I will let you rest. I know all this is difficult for u. You know I love you like my own don't you ? So if there is anything that worries you, anything at all, you know that I am there for you, don't you?"
Geet nodded her head, not trusting herself to speak and hugged Daadi. But when Daadi turned to leave, she called, "Daadi..."
"Yes beta?"
"Could you stay with me for a while?"
"OF course!" Daadi came back to sit on her bed. Geet moved nearer to Daadi and asked her permission silently before laying her head on Daadi's lap. Daadi's eyes misted as she gently smoothed the loose tendrils off Geet's face and then let her hand remain on Geet's forehead.
They sneaked into her dream like thieves. She was in a sunny room. She was playing with her son, tickling him softly by nuzzling him under his chin. It made him gurgle happily. She placed a gentle kiss on his heart and said, "mamma loves you." He gurgled again and shook his little dimpled hands. She caught his hands in hers and placed a kiss each on both of them. He patted her cheek in return, making cooing sounds. Picking him up for a cuddle, she crooned softly, rocking him with the gentle sway of her body. Happiness and contentment spread over her.
A strong hand gripped her shoulder to turn her around. "Hello Geet" Rahul sneered. She found that she was no longer holding her baby. "My baby!" she cried, pushing Rahul away she looked around in panic and found her baby sleeping in his cot.
"Your baby?" Rahul laughed, advancing on her. Geet moved backwards, frantically searching for escape, yet knowing she couldn't leave her child alone.
"He isn't yours." someone else said, peering into the baby cot.
"Rajveer! What...How?" dread crept into her voice.
"Did you think you could escape me? Never! I'm a part of you now!" he said, amused that she should ask. He slowly walked towards her. She grabbed a vase from the table and shouted, "No...no...! Leave me alone...go away!"
The baby started to cry. Fighting her fear that threatened to engulf her, she willed her legs to move. She needed to reach her child...he was crying. Evading the hands that tried to grab her she reached for the baby but the cot moved away, sliding further away from her. The vase was knocked off her hands, and strong hands circled her waist, making escape impossible.
"Geet, you cannot escape us!" whispered a familiar alchohol slurred voice close to her ears. "Chachu!" her voice was a squeak. She struggled to get away, pulling at his hands. Then she saw Maan at a distance, "Maan," she screamed, "help me!" Seeing him gave her the energy to break free.
" He won't... why should he? You are nobody to him!" Brij laughed as she ran forward.
" No... he cares about me!" she cried, trying to reach Maan who was moving further away from her, holding the baby in his arms.
"He cared about you...you were carrying their heir! Now they don't need you anymore."
" He doesn't even hear you!" Rahul jeered ...
"No...no... don't leave me , maan... help me please!" Geet pleaded, hope sparked as he turn back, but he looked at her with unseeing eyes and walked away.
"Maan ...help me" someone jeered mimicking her, "see he no longer wants u. he doesn't even hear you."
"It seems my little Geet has fallen in love! But he won't love you back. Who cares for spoiled goods?" Brij laughed.
" He will never love you ...I've left my mark on you."
"Maan ...Maan" she called out in futile banging at the door that now closed leaving her captive with her tormentors.
"Don't touch me...don't hurt me..." she pleaded trying to scramble away from the hands that caught her and pulled her down on the floor.
"Maan...save me...Maan!" she whimpered as she struggled against the hands that held her down...
...and fought to gain back her consciousness, to wake up, before she was torn apart yet again.
