It would appear that Ekta Kapoor was not off the mark. The bulk of television audience - be it urban or rural - is essentially mired in saas bahu sagas which is why even really well made serials like Mukti Bandhan have to worry about survival and struggle for viewership :-(

After a long time, have seen a serial on Indian Television which is not mushy, weepy or subject to machinations of kanjeevaram clad evil bahu / ex-lover / bhabhi/ devrani/ cousin sister et all.. there is a plot, a storyline which is outside the realm of sheer absurdity and bizzare, strong dialogues backed by great performances, a sensible, strong, no nonsense female protagonist who for a change is capable of giving as good as she gets instead of being a silent weeping self-sacrificing irritant!

A serial that has all this and more, is being forced off its prime slot, and is struggling for survival. Yet, serials like Saathiya, Yeh Rishta kya Kehlata Hai or Uttaran (which are complete humbug with the same story line repeated ad nauseum) rule the roost!

It would appear that we dislike anything that attempts to rise above the ordinary or humdrum, or we are masochists who relish the misery that female protagionists undergo in daily soap operas or the amazingly repititive storylines so that we are not forced to acknowledge or accept anything new.

I remember another serial "Pyaar na hoga kam" which within the parameters of an accepted soap tried to deal with the issue of fragmented social segments of our society and how they affected relationships. It didn't do well either despite a lovely old world charm to it and some really pertinant issues it raised. All it did attarct was the ire of kayasths and brahmins who doggedly refused to acknowledge the truth of what was being shown -best to bury our heads in the sand..

And its even more frightening that the bulk of telly serial viewership is supposed to be female! So no hope for you girl!

So as long as we want to watch crap, we will get dished out crap, and serials like Mukti Bandhan will unfortunately continue to struggle for existence...

brilliant post yaar, i am amazed at the audience mentalities, see ppl r liking serails like uttaran ,ltl which r total crap and not giving some hatke shows like mb a chance,
what is this audience donbt want to change , they just want stupid saas bahu dramas
i am happy that atleast the show is not being pulled off air
this is one show which has been truly different , no bitchy saas, bahu dramas, kitchen politics
or he lead start going gooey eyed and dancing whenever they want😆😆
@bold interesting point , yes i pity the female tastes , they r while continuing to watch these dramas promoting the regressive attitude
lets audiences like us enjoy this till it lasts😊good things r very rare in today world, its a sad reality

It's difficult 2 comprehend y a well-scripted serial, wid fantastic characterisation, fabulous dialogues nd good acting isn't getting d appreciation nd viewership it deserves? Hv majority of d pp's taste bcum so mediocre after watching d endless saas-bahu sagas dat dey aren't able 2 appreciate a gud product? I would feel bad if d show is finally forced 2 go off air, as der r a gud many ppl, though in d minority, who will be deprived of quality stuff. Wish d makers nd channel realise how d discerning few really love d appreciate d show nd although d show may not garner TRPs, but atleast dey would hv d satisfaction of making nd telecasting an extremely classy show nd hv d satisfaction in knowing dat it is being appreciated.

well I feel the same it is really a vicious circle.. we are the same people who are the first to complain of lack of quality in terms of content on tv. and we are the very same people who lap up crap thrown endlessly at us.. day in and out.. recycled crap.. not having the guts to get out of the mould and try to experiment with something new.. something genuine.. whether its movies or shows..

I am going to paste a bit of my post from one of the threads here

I am proud to be a MB audience.. just for the storytelling.. conviction.. dignity of opinions of each character.. I am saddened by the lack of conviction, depth and dignity of the mass audience.. for a show like MB being in troubled waters..

Days like these make me feel why should anyone dare to make a change in the stereotype.. and go against the tide.. but again m stubborn enough to feel that creative freedom has the right to expression even if its made for an exclusive niche.

I hear the audience is mainly rural or from the country and likes typical traditional rural shows. I was speaking to mom and she was like remember the time when we had only doordarshan.. and there were quality shows-urbane and rural.. women were emancipated whether it was a police inspector in Udaan or just a curious social reformer in Rajni..

a lot of it was because privatization and capitalist motives did not drive the media. Also not every tom dick and harry had a tv set.. and they were not target audiences.. and now sadly the target area does include a lot of the interiors.. its complete reverse now. .a show like Rishta.com doesn't run coz the urbane niche dont account for a lot in the TRP race.. although MB should reach wider than R.com's target its still not good enough..

all private channel mumbo jumbo.. I dont know who to blame the ekta kapoors.. the capitalist corporates behind the channels or just plain us.. who willingly endure the dumbing of society.. Media in general is pits.. not just in India even abroad.. if news channels can be so sad.. fiction is well fiction.. so one can take endless liberties there not necessarily exercising freedom

So while MB remains I will enjoy it.. and hope the makers don't bend in too much to include the masala for the channels sake.. they have big trophy children in their kitty already.. let MB be a mediocre or a black sheep wrt TRPs for all I care.. as far as we still get the same quality.

m fed up of dis trp's race ...it is slaughtering many perfect shows.

Examples r in plenty!
Its lyk its a crime to think and create out of d box

Mb is dat one show wid an amazing pace, brilliant actors, perfect story...

Bt still ppl lov to watch the saas-bahu sagas wid no theme and jus dilution of stories

Yup I guess you need to just cross your fingers and hope that Colors will allow one lame dog in the TRP race to continue to limp to finish and in the process, rather unwittingly allow some of us to watch good quality sensible fare...

Or maybe as a TV audience we just need to mature.. overseas you have enough and more series which have sensible content!

You know strangely enough, most of the people I talk to, watch and like Muktibandhan, but clearly :-) I talk to a miniscule percentage of the television audience. :-) Look at even the forum - the activity is far lesser than other forums.. in any case most active forums, I just end up seeing gushing about the hero's six packs or the love scenes etc I guess MuktiBandhan doesn't really give anyone an opportunity to do that, lol!( In fact I suspect the Nirali-Jimmy sequence has been introduced to proovide this side attrartion)

What it does, give you a thinking 20 minutes with refreshing dialogues which force you to pay attention, get mentally stimulated rather than either ogling at the male protagonists or commiserating with the state of the poor female one!

Hopefully Colours will allow this to continue in the 11 pm slot...

Hadn't logged on or watched telly for a couple of weeks, or maybe more, logged on and was shocked to see that IMV had been bumped off!

The man defines the serial - its his charcter and machinations that make the serial just a nail biter... but falling prey to the dictates of the TRP game, insteda the focus in on Nirali-Jimmy romance and triangles galore! Another one bites the dust?

Wonderful post. I agree with u all 100%. it truly is a shame that good shows are thrown into late time-slots and crappy ones get the prime-time slots. Shows the deteriorating tastes of the Indian viewers. Hate to see that crappy shows are ruling high on the TRP charts, and good shows like MB suffer. Not only that but even the repeats are cut down to 7 in the morning. Not at all a suitable time. So no option but to watch it on-line. Sorry state of affairs for Indian TV I think.
