Yes, it is his engagement ring. I think he wears it since it is now a part of him. Or maybe he never really thought much about it. I don't know if Talli is still wearing hers. She might have taken it off in hurt and anger. It does make much more sense for him to leave his on, and her to take it off.
I don't find his wearing an engagement ring to be hinting at or meaning any Kesar Talli future. In India people wear rings, or not wear rings. Looking at the ring finger of either hand is not exactly the best or foolproof method of determining a person's marital status in India. (This is also the case in some other cultures as well, not just India.) It's not always easy to tell an engagement ring, wedding bands--with non engagement rings or wedding bands.
He wears it, but it's no longer signifying that he's engaged. But it's still a ring that holds an important significance and meaning, like many rings often do for many people--especially in India where some people do tend to wear a few rings on their hands.
That ring signifies now major turning point in his life. A part of his life where he came to realizations, where he made major decisions, and ultimately forever changed him, his outlook, his future, his life.
