Chapter 46
He pulled himself from her with such strength that she jerked and stumbled a step back and hit the wall...he continued to take steps backwards until he collided with the wall across from her. His mind was still blank...he was finding it hard to bring himself out of the stupor. He simply stood still as he watched her with disgust...he was disgusted that his first kiss was for her...
for her? With much effort she straightened herself and managed to stand steady. After what he had done, how could anyone...
anyone be able to stand on their feet? She had initially frozen when he kissed her...that was the least she had expected of him...ever. She had always known that even their friendship was forced and one-sided...that he didn't really care for her as much as she did. But she didn't want to lose on the only person who didn't care about how alluring she looked...or how rich she was.
She didn't have any real friends...she was always surrounded by guys making passes at her or friends who sought her out for financial help. In the midst of all the people that surrounded her like bees to honey, she found him the most amicable...and she did everything to keep him close...even to a point where she followed him everywhere and tried to attract him by hurling her body over his. He had always maintained his distance with her...and now...seeing him get close to her in such a manner, all she could do was take it in...
She straightened her top and closed her eyes as she ran her hands through her hair to set them properly again...she knew he was watching her which is why she didn't look at him directly...she just opened the door and stepped out without saying a word.
When the door closed behind her he sighed in relief...he was mad at her...he had never liked the kind of attention she gave him but something always stopped him from telling her rudely that he didn't give a damn about her...that she should stop following him around. He started moving towards the wall against which he had pushed her and stepped on something...he saw it was an envelope...he picked it up and opened it to read...
Friends
bring happiness
throughout the year!
Especially
a friend like
YOU!
Happy New Year! Something made him turn the card to its back and there he saw...in very small writing she had written
'May every day of the new year glow with good cheer and happiness for you and your loved ones...I miss you!' He knew why she chose to write on the back..that there were less chances of anyone reading the back of a card. With that, she had conveyed the message and hid it from him too. Ever since Simran and Keerti came into his life, he became less and less accessible...she had gotten the hint and with a heavy heart, she had stopped her desperate attempts to get in touch with him every now and then...and with the three words...she was letting him know how much he meant to her...
The anger soon turned into guilt as he realized it wasn't her fault that his first kiss was with her...that she had not made any move on him...he was the only one responsible for what had happened between them. He had become so intoxicated with Keerti's memories that he imagined her everywhere...even in her...so why was he being angry at her?
He opened the door knowing she would still be standing on his porch pulling herself together...and sure enough he saw her sitting on one of the steps at the entrance. She heard the door open behind her and got up to say "I'm sorry...I was just leaving.." still not looking at him.
As she began to walk down the remaining steps he called out to her "Naina wait..." and she stopped. Although he couldn't see her face he knew she was taking this time to wipe her tears...she took a deep breath before turning around to say "Happy New Year Rohan..." and before tears started flowing again, she turned back to walk away...
