How old is too old for a Bollywood actress to play lead?

Cinema is a visual medium and Bollywood hugely looks at our actresses as glam dolls. Our actresses unlike in Hollywood need to be the superwoman - they need to dance, act, stay slim , be fashionable all these at the same time.

I have often seen people talking about actresses being too old to play lead and that they need to retire. This is the effect of us looking at our actresses as glamorous objects. If they are married and are in the child bearing years, the pressure is even more so.

The question when we let our men play leads at 42-44, Why be harsh on the ladies?

Here are noted examples of some actresses from yester years who gave their career best beformances in the late 30s.

-Meena Kumari gave us a Pakeezah at age 39.
-Hema Malini won the best actress award for her perfomance in Rihahee at 40.

So according to you, how old is too old for a Bollywood actress to play the lead?

There shouldn't be no age limit. I will watch a 60 year old playing a lead...but the film has to be good and entertaining for me to watch.

Age doesn't matter to me as long as they can dance...lol I loved madhuri's dance even though her last movie she was 40 years old, she was way better than actresses in their 30's and 20's.

I would love to see Urmila and karisma come back and dance their way to the top again.

Age doesn't play a huge factor for me. It doesn't matter as long as the movie is good, the acting is good and it does justice to the role!

As long as the role the actress is playing is right for her there is no problem with it at all.

The trouble is that the only role most filmmakers (who are guys, by the way) can imagine for a woman is as an object of male lust or something that is little more than a walking talking food preparation unit with which you can have sex if she's married.
There honestly isn't much scope for talent or personality in either of those.
We need more and better plots and roles for women across the board.

I don't really care how old they are as long as the script is good, the movie is entertaining, and the role suits them.

Age shouldn't matter, but unfortunately in Bollywood it does for actresses.

In Bollywood once an actress reaches in the mid thirties their career is done! 👎🏼

It's getting better now.
Back then Sridevi retired at 32, yet Aishwarya done a Dhoom 2 at 32.
Back then Madhuri was "past it" post DTPH at 30. Yet nnow Kareena is holding strong to the #1 position at 30 also.
Kajol became a bhabhi in K3G and retired at 26 (after a decade of hits), yet today Sonam/Deepika/Asin are just getting into their zones at 25/26.

Madhuri rocked with Aaja Nachle at 40.
Ashwariya and Kajol are in their late 30s but they're still rocking their performances.
Sridevi is coming back at the age of 47 and looking her best ever.

40 is the new 20 in Bollywood.

Rani recently had a rebirth with No One Killed Jessica, right when eveyrone started writing her off. Preity will do the same, and she is 36.

Vidya is going from strength to strenghh and she's mid-30s.

I think people aren't looking at age in a negative light as much as before.

Thanks to the gymming-generation + botox <3

Back in the early 90s every year we would see a bunch of 16 year olds entering the industry, and by the time they hit their mid-20s they were shown the exit door.

Look at Malaika (37) and Mallika (35+) - they are sex symbols.

Jai Ho!
