@Sujju: Thanks so much for the compliment! A book? Well, to impart a confession, I had begun writing one in my 8th grade, but gave it up...
Sarju will have to wait in the JH, coz its Anjali's turn for an update!

@Sudhalata: Thnx, so much di! Well, its like father, like son- never seen a more reticent pair than them. Dinkar rao was helpless & lashed out at his son- A very big mistake!!

@Faiza: Thnax a lot!! Sarju has passed thru a hot furnace- that's why he is full of gold!

Update coming up!!

Well, I am back with an update!! I'll be posting the updates here till the serial gets over, then I'll shift to the FF section with my new ones. Enjoy!!

"Mama Jaan, mujhe padhna hai"

"Kya bol rahi hai Anju? Chal jaa, mujhe bohot kaam hai!"

"Mamu, mujhe school jaake padhaai karni hai!! Aur jab tak aap jawaab nahi dete, mein yahaan se nahin hilne waali."

Usmaan Bhai finally looked up, to see a resolute Anju standing in front of his desk with her arms crossed. He had never seen such a tenacious girl like her. He admired her tenacity, but it could get irritating, like it was, now.

"Acchaa baba, ab bol. Kya chaahiye tujhe?"

"Mamu aapne kuch bhi nahi suna? Mujhe school jaake aage padhna hai!"

Usmaan Bhai thought about Anju's decision. He would like his girl to get educated, too. She was to be his heir after all, & her education would be an added benefit. Hell, he knew what troubles he had had to face because of his illiteracy.

"Theek hai, taiyar ho ja. Tu kal se school jaayegi. Kaunsi class mein?"

"5th Mamu, Paanchvi kaksha mein." Anju smiled & gave him a hug with her arms tight around his midriff. Usmaan Bhai smiled, his daughter loved him too much for his own good.

While going out, he remarked to Kaanta

"Teri beti ko samhaal, Kaanta."

Anju sat in her room reading a novel. It was so exciting. It would be more exciting when she went to school tomorrow. She would meet new people of her age & she would make friends. She loved it here; her Mamu gave her everything she asked. Toys, books, clothes, but, but'.. not friends. Oh well, if she asked him, he would probably buy a couple of orphans from the orphanage & make them play in front of her. She laughed. Yes, Mamu would do that.

She didn't want it like that, though. Money could buy people, but not true friends. She would always see from her window, the boys playing cricket & enjoying the game. She could see the girls playing games of catch & hide-seek. She knew she could never play with them.

Being intelligent & sharp, it hadn't taken Anju to realize that her life was anything but normal. She wasn't allowed to go out whenever because her life would be in danger as Mamu had said. She could only play in the courtyard with her toys while men holding guns would look on, their faces alert & expressionless.

Going to school would giver her a chance to step into the world & grab life with both hands outstretched.

Later in the evening, Anju tried out her new uniform . She didn't know how Mamajaan had ranged for her school, right down to getting her textbooks & notebooks & getting admission into one of the best schools in the city. She knew this was not the starting of the term. Mamu had probably held the principal & the directors at gun point to get her admitted. Well, she wasn't complaining. When she was educated, she would learn that there were many more ways to get things done apart from threatening physical harm.

The next day, Anju got up early, filled her bag & went running upto her mother.

"Maa, jaldi tiffin dedo, or choti bhi bana do. Yeh lo ribbons."

"Haan, haan Anju aa rahi hoon. Yeh le tera tiffin. Iss mein meine tera man pasand daal bhati churma diya hai.( 😉 😆) Jab se tere Mamajaan tujhe woh ekbaar khilaaya, tabse aur kuch tujhe accha hi nahi lagta."

"Jaane do na Maa. Chalo jaldi, mujhe der ho rahi hai."

Anju stepped into the courtyard. She wished she 'd met Maamu before she was leaving, but Maa had said, he'd left early & was out of town. She stepped into the jeep, which contained 2 guards in the front, one at the back holding guns.

Oh no, she would feel so embarassed at the school gates. The children would gawk at her & they would all know''

Well let them, she thought defiantly. She wasn't going to berate her family to get accepted by the children, & the guards were her family as well. Whoever wanted to be friends with her, would have to accept her as she was alongwith her background.

At the end of the day, Anju was content. What she had expected had happened; but there were a couple of girls who'd giver her small, tentative smiles. She would sit with them the next day.

A month had passed by & Anju had settled into her school nicely. After a week, she had started gaining friends & was soon becoming popular. She had assured her teachers that she would cover her backlog & give the final exams on time. It wasn't her popularity or her friends that she was excited about. It was the studies she found exhilarating. She loved to begin a new chapter, study it thoroughly. She loved the fell of a fresh page of her notebook as she began writing.

And Usmaan Bhai & Kaanta were only happy seeing her happy as well.

It was a normal day for Anju. She had her school & it was the last day of the week & she was looking forward to the weekend, because Mamu had promised her to take her for a picninc. She got into the car & closed the door behind her. As they were speeding along the road. Anju suddenly felt the car screeching to a halt. Then she was immediately pushed downwards as a fusillade of bullets hit the windshield. She sensed the body of the guard protecting her going slack & knew immediately that he'd been shot. She tried to get acroos his body to grab the gun & immediately felt numbness across her arm. As she watched in horror, a red stain spread through the pristine white of her shirt. As her eyes closed, she hoped Mamu would know how much she loved him & that he would not blame himself for this.

"Anju, Anju beta uth jaa."

Anju could hear Maa's concerned voice from far away. She wanted to call out that she was fine. What was Maa doing in the school anyway. Then she remembered the gunshot & realized that she was alive.

She tried to open her eyes & mumbled her response.

"Usmaan bhai, usse hosh aa raha hai."

"Anju, aakhein khol." She could hear Mamajaan's gruff voice which was very baleful.

"Mein theek hoon, Maa, mamu." She said weakly.

"Theek? Dekha Bhai jaan, isse goli lagi hai aur yeh keh rahi hai ki yeh theek hai!" Kaanta was almost hysterical.

"Haanta, woh keh rahi hai to sahi hai.Woh meri bhaanji hai. Theek hi hogi."

Anju smiled. Well, there was some pain, but she would recover. The next day, Mamu gave her a big chocolate, for receiving her 1st bullet. She knew that he was dismissing the entire incident & treating it casually; to make her feel unafraid. But she had seen him look bleak & flinch everytime she winced while the doctor dressed her wound everyday. The chocolate made him feel more secure than her.

By the end of the month Anju was almost fully recovered. At night, she told her mother that she would be going to school the next day. She saw her Maa & Mamu exhange serious glances.

"Anju tu kal se school nahin jaayegi."

"Lekin, mamu'''."

"Nahin bola na!"

Oh, this was so unfair. It was just one incident, for goodness' sake!! She would even agree to go with Mamu's entire fleet of guards for that. She wanted to go to school. She felt so helpless & tears formed in her eyes.

"Anju, ro mat, beta. We almost lost u once. Not again. You will not go to school, but u will study here, at home. I have arranged for the best tutors along with your school teachers. U will study here during your normal school hours & give ur exams from home. This way, even I can train you accordingly"

Anju bit her lip still unhappy with the fairness of it all. Well, one couldn't have everything. Atleast she was getting educated. She sighed & resigned herself to another routine in her golden cage, as she dubbed her home.

Faizu my like button is not working here all the time

Purva my dear dear friend you are so very talented as I have always said I love your writing style and this is a very different kind of FF very refreshing as there is the thrill coming from the danger that Anjali and her family have to face everyday along with Anjali's desire to be educated.

I just loved it and looking forward to the next update...🤗
