I think Jai knows that Bani didnot/would not take the money, but want's to give himself an excuse; any excuse for not reciprocating the feelings she has for him, to distance himself from her, to believe the worst of her.

I think he knows too that he does have a soft corner for Bani despite all that what happened and that irks him no end....
