Chapter 11:Maan went back downstairs to see the party still as lively as he had left it. His eyes wandered to Geet, who was with her parents, talking to some local people from the village.
Dev & Pari were together talking to other guests - it seemed like Dev was introducing Pari to them as she was shaking hands with one of the women.
Savitri Devi was engrossed in laughter with her acquaintances from Delhi.
Maan was eager to see Geet's reaction to the phone, but he didn't know when she would end up going upstairs. Despite her views against marraige, she seemed to be enjoying herself.
After much contemplation, he wandered over to where she was with her parents.
"Ahem," he cleared his throat awkwardly as he stood beside her.
"Mrs Shinda, this is my fiance, Maan Singh Khurana."Maan smiled to himself - he liked it when Geet introduced him as her fiance.
"My, what a handsome man," Mrs Shinda complimented. Maan just smiled politely in response, glancing at Geet.
"Our Geet is very lucky - and so is Pari, of course," gushed Rano.
"Geet, can I talk to you in private?" Maan asked.
Geet looked confused but nodded, and Maan led her through the crowd of people and up the stairs.
"Why are we going upstairs?" she asked. She glanced back to see if anybody had noticed, but it didn't look like they had.
Maan didn't reply and instead opened the door for her to her bedroom.
"Maan, what are you doing?" she asked, then she noticed the phone on her bed with a note. Curious, she walked over to it, and picked up the phone. It was sleek, shiny, business-like. She smiled at it, then picked up the note, which had 'Geet' written on the front. She opened it up, it read:
Geet, I bought this for you as your engagement gift. Please don't reject it - it will come handy in the future.
Maan.
Geet turned around to face her new fiance, who was leaning against the doorway.
"Is this for business purposes?" she asked, her face lighting up.
Maan's face fell a little. He had intended for the phone to be a means of communication between him & Geet before their wedding.
"Oh, well, actually-""I bet it has all the latest business applications on it, right?"
"Geet, I bought it so that-"
"I know that there's a lot I need to learn about managing a business - not even that, an empire like yours. I was reading an article in the business newspaper the other day, and it was about women and their role in business, and how it's becoming more common for women to go into business. I'm glad about that - I'm a little feminist, so I believe that women have more of a role than cooking in a kitchen all day. Your Dadima is the perfect example - she founded KC, didn't she?"Maan just nodded, surprised at how passionate about business she was. He knew she had an interest in it - he hadn't realised, until now, that she actually eat, breathed & lived for business.
"Thank you so much for the gift, I truly love it!" she gushed, placing it carefully in the top drawer. "I'll take good care of it, I promise. It will help me in the future."
She gave him one of her dazzling smiles then left the room, elated.
"I really have my work cut out with her," Maan muttered to himself, sighing.
