Chapter 6:Half an hour later, Maan & Dev were in Maan's guest room at the Handas, working out with their weights.
"Bro, I can't believe that just a few days ago I was a single bachelor. Now I'm due to get engaged."
"I can't believe you agreed to marraige so easily, Dev."
"There's something different about Pari, bro... She's not like other girls. She changed my view on marraige. Maybe it's not that bad as I thought it was, you know? You can't criticise it unless you've tried it."
"Try telling that to Geet."
"Oh yeah, you disappeared off earlier... did you go to see her?" Dev winked at Maan.
Maan put his weights down & sat up, wiping himself off with a towel.
"Yeah, I did. I offered her a proposition."
"Proposition? Bro, that's not the way to win over the girl you like."
"The proposition is that if she marries me, she becomes CEO of KC."Dev almost dropped his heavy weights down in surprise.
"What...?"
"If she agrees, she'll become my wife. She gets her career, whilst I get a chance to win her over."
"What if she says no?"Maan smiled.
"I don't think she will. When I left her, she seemed to be in some deep thought. I think she's considering it."
Dev laughed.
"Bribing a girl to marry you, is that how desperate Maan Singh Khurana is? What if Dadima or the Handas found out about your proposition??"
"Not desperate, Dev. Geet's the girl I want to marry, but she doesn't want to get settled down. And besides, who says they will? When Geet agrees, they'll just think that she had a change of heart & decided to get settled down after all. This CEO offer will bring us closer. I'm sure of it."
~Pari walked into Geet's room, happily humming to herself, a smile on her face. She noticed her sister sat on the bed, staring at the floor intently, lost in some thought. She sat down beside her.
"Geet?"Geet was still thinking of Maan's offer.
"Geet?"Pari clicked her fingers - no response.
"Geet!"She nudged Geet slightly, & Geet came back to earth.
"Huh? Oh, when did you come, Pari?""I've been calling you for ages, you look lost in some thought. What is it?"Geet didn't know on whether she should tell Pari about the CEO offer or not... she decided to keep quiet for now.
"Oh, nothing. Did anyone say anything about me after I stormed out?"Pari shook her head.
"Savitri Devi-ji changed the topic. She said she wants me to marry Dev."
"What do you think of him?"
"I think he's a nice person," Pari said shyly. "I haven't agreed to anything yet, but... I'm planning on saying yes."
"Pari, are you sure? He seems a little lost in our village life."
"That doesn't matter, he's from the city, what do you expect?"
"All I'm saying is that I want you to be completely sure that he's the right person for you. I mean, you're both so different..."
"You know what they say though, Geet. Opposites attract & all that."
"Yes, but he's confident & outspoken. You're shy & polite. He doesn't know you like I do. I don't want to see you get hurt."Pari took Geet's hand.
"Geet, trust me. I know his attitude is a little out of place, but maybe I could be the one to change that. After marraige, he might be a completely different person."
"I hope he is. For your sake."
"Don't worry about me. Think about yourself, Maa is probably pulling her hair out over your little speech."Geet sighed.
"I don't think I'm ready to face her yet."
"I'd better go back downstairs, I was supposed to be helping Maa preparing for tonight's dinner. Tomorrow's their last day in Hoshiarpur. I wonder what Maan will do now."
Geet's ears perked up.
"What do you mean?""Well, I think Savitri Devi-ji wanted you to marry Maan, but now you've said no, he'll have to look for a girl elsewhere... anyway, that's not our business, right? I'll see you later. Try not to worry too much, Geet. You did the right thing, standing up for yourself."Pari gave her sister a reassuring smile & left the room, leaving Geet alone again to think about Maan's proposition...
~An hour later, Geet had decided. She had thought carefully over Maan's offer, weighed up the pros & cons, business style, & had reached a mental verdict. She took a deep breath, left her room & knocked on Maan's door. It was now or never.
Maan opened the door, business newspaper in his hand. He smiled when he saw Geet.
"Do you want to come in?" he offered.
"No. I just came to tell you... yes."
"Yes to what?"
"To your proposition. I become CEO of your company if I marry you. I'll do it."Maan ran a hand over his mouth to hide a smile.
"Well, I'm glad to hear it. It works both ways. I won't have to go wife hunting, & you get the career you've worked hard for & wanted. But there's just one small thing."
"What?"
"No one can find out about my proposition."
Geet frowned.
"But I just told everyone that I don't want to get married, how will they believe me now?"
"Tell them you had a change of heart, you realised that getting married into the Khuranas is in your best interests. You're a smart girl, Geet. You'll come up with something. I'll see you at dinner."
Maan closed the door. Inside his bedroom, he let out a sigh of relief & smiled to himself.
On the other side of the door, Geet let out a sigh of worry & frowned.
