Chapter 7:Later that night, after dinner, the Handas & the Khuranas were sat in the main living area. Geet was trying to find the right time to tell her parents that she would marry, so she was lost in deep thought.
Savitri Devi decided to talk about Dev & Pari's upcoming engagement.
"Mohinder, Rano, as you know we're leaving for Delhi tomorrow night. We want to set a date for the engagement before we go."Maan was watching Geet, knowing she was worrying about how to break the news.
"Yes, of course," said Rano.
"Do you have a date in mind?""I don't want to prolong this. So I was thinking, maybe in 2 weeks?"Pari's eyes widened in surprise. Geet, who was sat next to her, snapped out of her own thinking, & looked at Pari, who mouthed 2 weeks to her. Pari looked at Dev shyly, who raised his eyebrows & smiled at her.
"Pari, dear, what do you think?" asked Rano.
"Ji, I'm happy with that.""Are you sure?" Savitri Devi said.
"We don't want you to feel like we're rushing you into things."
"No, not at all." Pari fixed her eyes on the ground again.
Geet was beginning to panic. They were setting dates. She glanced at Maan, who was staring at her. He gave her a comforting smile & she knew it was now or never.
In true Geet style, she stood up once again to get everyone's attention.
"Geetanjali, if you're going to create a scene then I'm telling you, now's not the time," Rano said, a hint of anger in her voice. She had felt embarrased over Geet's earlier outburst.
"No, Maa, I need to tell you all something. I... well, I... The thing is-"Maan stood up.
"What Geet's trying to say is that she's agreed to marry me."Maan saw 5 shocked faces turn to look at him. He looked straight at Geet, who smiled gratefully.
"Geet, is this true?" asked Rano, spreading into a smile.
"Yes, Maa," replied Geet, smiling.
"I knew you'd see sense!" Rano got up & hugged her daughter happily.
"Look at the charms my Maan works," Savitri Devi said.
"Geet refused to marraige earlier, and in the space of a few hours, he got her to agree. My grandson is one of a kind, isn't he?"
"Congrats to both of you," Dev said casually, winking at Maan.
Maan sat back down on the sofa. Geet also sat back down in her seat. She glanced at Pari, who was looking at her, a confused expression on her face.
"Mohinder, Rano, I can't tell you how happy I am that your daughters will become our bahus. I was a little worried when Geet refused, because it meant that poor Maan would have to go searching for a suitable wife again. I knew him & Geet were the perfect match.""We're just happy that you want our daughters to be your bahus," Rano replied.
"Why don't we have a double engagement?" Dev suggested.
"It would be fun, two brothers getting engaged to two sisters. That is, if anyone disagrees. Bro's up for it, right?"Maan nodded in agreement.
Geet noticed how unusually quiet her father was. He was looking down at the floor in deep thought.
"Oh no, we have no objections," said Rano.
"Right, Geet?""None at all," Geet replied.
"Toh baat pakki!" Savitri Devi said, beaming with happiness.
"We're leaving for Delhi tomorrow night, so we can discuss everything tomorrow, I'm feeling a little tired right now."
"Ji, of course."Savitri Devi, Maan & Dev all headed upstairs. Mohinder made sure they were out of earshot, then he began speaking.
"Geet, I know that Pari is completely happy with this, but I'm not too sure about you. You've been so against marraige all along, what's changed?""Nothing, Dad," Geet lied.
"I just... I thought of how me & Pari would be in the same house & how it's such a good proposal and I didn't want to make a mistake by rejecting then regret it."
"But-"
"Mohinder, our beloved daughters are marrying into the Khuranas, what more could we ask for?"Rano stood up & kissed both her daughters on the cheek.
"Both of you have made me truly happy today. Just think, in a few weeks time, you'll be engaged! Hayee, rabba, thank you."Pari turned to Geet, worried for her as she had been so against marraige before.
Geet gave her a reassuring smile back, as if to say everything was ok.
