April is Autism Awareness Month.
April 2, 2011 is Autism Awareness Day.

Mods, please, may we sticky this thread for the month of April. Thank you.

Autism is a neurological, pervasive developmental disorder that impacts the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Today 1 in 91 children receive a diagnosis somewhere within the autistic spectrum. It has reached epidemic proportions. More children are diagnosed with having autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and other children illness combined.

We are likely to know a family member or friend with a child with ASD or encounter someone with this disorder during our lifetime. So, please do take a moment today to read a little about autism if you have never heard of it.

The very things we take for granted in our every day life is a challenge for those with ASD. Understanding their challenges opens our hearts to have compassion and appreciation of their efforts just to make it through each day. The next time we encounter someone with autism, let's give them a smile, they need them more than ridicules and judgments from us.

I speak from personal experience as a mother, when I say that in spite of their disability, people with ASD can teach us the truth about love, joy, compassion and humility. So please join us in celebrating and accepting those with ASD. They can and do contribute to society in their own ways.

Huma and Mamma Mia🤗

I am so happy to hear both of you have given your time to these special people in any which way you can. Thank you. I personally know what life is like for families raising children with ASD, my husband and I live it everyday. With intervention, therapy, patience, love and care they can as adults live independently leading productive lives. 😃

Roka

Autism is referred to as Autism Spectrum Disorder bec' people with this disorder have a wide range of symptoms some mild and some severe, they have good days and not so good days bec' of how they process all the information their senses take in.

When they have a meltdown in public it's not bec' they are badly parented children or spoiled brats, they are disturbed by sounds, sights and smells that most of our brains filter out and they are unable to handle it. But they get better with therapies over time.
