April 2, 2011 is Autism Awareness Day.
We are likely to know a family member or friend with a child with ASD or encounter someone with this disorder during our lifetime. So, please do take a moment today to read a little about autism if you have never heard of it.
The very things we take for granted in our every day life is a challenge for those with ASD. Understanding their challenges opens our hearts to have compassion and appreciation of their efforts just to make it through each day. The next time we encounter someone with autism, let's give them a smile, they need them more than ridicules and judgments from us.
I speak from personal experience as a mother, when I say that in spite of their disability, people with ASD can teach us the truth about love, joy, compassion and humility. So please join us in celebrating and accepting those with ASD. They can and do contribute to society in their own ways.
