Chapter Ten
A Beautiful Mind and an Angel From Bappa
The night had begun to dwell, Roops and Naku had completed a round of five pooja's already, and to Naku's surprise Roops had been coping well with the hunger, but than she became excited over the fact that Baji had gotten jealous so quickly, maybe that's where she got her little bit of strength from to keep up with the routine. When Naku had come back from the market, she had prepared various number of dishes like she was cooking for a King's feast making Baji absolutely love Naku. Naku was aware that when one had consumed such high amounts of Bhaang hunger struck in like a hurricane, but in Baji's case that would be better explained as a Tsunami. Food was served at half seven in the evening, but Saab hadn't come at the dining table today, so she made it a reminder that she must serve him once the Kitchen had been cleaned after the huge amount of cooking she'd done, and to top it she was fasting, normally you are allowed to stick to a milk and fruit or dry fruit diet, which is what Roops had opted for, but Naku however would always keep the stricter version, originally meant for Brahmins, and higher cast Rishi's and Pandit's, but after much convincing she'd managed to get permission from Shastri ji, and had since than kept it in a strict manner without fail.
As she entered her Saab's room, she saw him in his classic white Kurta which she had figured by now was his night suit, standing by the window staring out, with one arm crossed across his chest and the other above it with his forearm reaching below his chin with his hand supporting his chin which was lightly resting on it, she coughed lightly to let him know of her presence. Jaanta tha, ke tu zaroor ayegi, said Dutta answering to her coughing simultaneously, without turning around he threw his head back slightly and inhaled a deep breath, when he turned around to Naku he saw her standing there with a tray of food that was covered supported by a glass of water, and she was now making her way towards him, or so he thought, but than stopped halfway and went towards the table, placing his meal there for him, while she carried on talking about how he was missed at dinner, and figured he'd be alone in his room and drinking.
...........Saab, she begun, when Dutta thought to himself...here goes her baashan, which is definately going to be as long as the the great wall of China, as he placed himself on the sofa, behind the dinner plate, whilst rolling up his sleeves...bol, aaj kya naya baashan dene wali hai tu mujhe, he questioned as he glanced up at her briefly and than continued....aaj tu mujhe kya bataygi, jo mujhe pehle se nahin pata...he said sarcastically while he tampered with the food before him, and waited for her to answer
...nahin Saab main to yeh kehne wali thi, ke bhooke ped aapko nasha karke sona nahin chahiye tha, she replied embarassed that Dutta already knew her nature of trying to rectify people's mistakes, or better yet helping them to prevent it.
Somewhere along the lines Dutta had enjoyed Naku's company, not because she was a girl and she did have certain things that made a guy think otherwise in her presence, her complexion clearly not being one of them, but because she was different, her thinking was definately different, she never gave the expected answer, it would always be different to what other girls would say, simple things took her interest, she wasn't materialistically attached to things like clothes and dressing up...that much he'd figured out of her, but than there were other things, like when she spoke she didn't realise how her eyes glowed as she reflected the images from her mind through her eyes which were visible to her listeners, she had a crease in the form of two vertical but faint lines between her eyebrows that appeared when she got scared but was unaware of it's presence on her face, she was innocent which could be noticed by her sweet tone of her voice. He wasn't attracted to her he told himself, but he was merely impressed by the qualities this girl possessed, and the part that Dutta liked the most was that she was unaware of all this and he'd figured it out within two days, but than there other things that made Dutta curious about her knowledge and talents, so he wanted to find out more about her, he knew she wouldn't let him go hungry, the girl that could go all the way to the market and cook a feast for a hunger starved Baji within a copule of hours while she was starving herself for some useless vrat..so they call it.....surely wouldn't let me starve...the man of the house, thought Dutta to himself, as he dived into the food not showing the extent of his hunger, his bhaang had worn off as when alcohol is consumed over the drugged liquid it cancels out the buzz of the drug, and hence the alcohol buzz kicks in.
As Naku places herself on the floor beside a hungry Dutta, she could tell he was hungry but couldn't understand why he didn't join the rest of the family over dinner, she couldn't keep quiet, that was a difficult thing for Naku, as she played with her duppatta, she could feel Dutta's eyes pondering in her direction as he was eating his food, as if he knew he didn't have to encourage her to talk and given enough time she would begin herself, not trying to give in Naku opened her mouth...
....Saab..., peena zaroori hai kya...she began hesistating, when she caught Dutta's lips turning up at the corner's as though he were saying 'I knew it' to himself. And than Naku looked down feeling a little silly by giving into him, why couldn't I just sit here and wait for him to finish, ...now he thinks you're a joke, she cursed....just like the rest of the world, ..except for Gaurav, she smiled to herself weakly knowing she would probably never get to see him again.
Tu vrat kyun rakhti hai, he questioned without looking up and attempted to break a piece of roti at the same time, confusing Naku as to what link there was between his drinking and vrat as her crease between her eyebrows had appeared, he looked directly at her now still chewing with his mouth full at the visible side of his right cheek which was facing Naku and gave her 'go on' type of look to tell her he was waiting for her answer.
When Naku began telling him that I keep a Vrat so that God takes away all our problems, and if he can't than he can at least guide us through the path so we remember of his existence in our time of need she explained, as she brought her finger towards her forehead and felt her skin wondering what it was he was staring at a little while ago, when he'd replied, well just like you said God can't take away our problems because there isn't one he said giving her his explanation to her theory, he had her full attention and she wondered why he thought so, so before waiting for her to answer he continued, you see someone can only help you if they exist, but if they are not there how can that be, when he saw Naku raise her hand to intervene, he stopped her by raising his hand by motioning her to let him finish and swallowing his morsel of food at the same time first, and when she dropped her hand, he went on....
when we have problems only the weak people use excuses like blaming God or going to God for helping them, when they know that all that is in front of them is a mere stone, but yet they overlook that fact and believe that stone to be otherwise, because they have hope, and hope leads their faith to God, which in return gives them nothing, and so you ask me why I drink, well I drink becasue unlike you I don't look to God for my problems I solve them myself, he paused and than said, and I always have done, and will do, as Naku looked at him talking while he had got up as he had finished his food and was walking with his hands behind his back she could tell how his voice had changed to a cold stern and chilling tone that she could shiver just from the sound of it, it was as if his eyes had no emotions...no feelings, she dared not interrupt and just watched on while he still talked....you believe God is with you on your every journey, and I believe that my drink is my only witness and best company which has always held my hand along my path, when I thought that I would have someone in person to share my path and walk through my journey of life and guide me I turned to him for help to ask him to make that person mine but again as always I was just talking to a stone, he told her as he looked through the glass of Whiskey at his reflection which was held at face level by him, it was like he was remembering a memory which had hurt him in the past, but was unable to bear the torture of bringing it to his lips, thought Naku as she stared at his huge body standing over her head.
Saab aap ki baaton se to aisa lagta hai ke, kisi ne aapko koi bohut bara dokha diya hai, aur uss dokhe ke awaaz abhi bi aap ke kaano mein ghoonj ti hai, she replied as though she were deep in his thoughts understanding what he had not said. As a shattered Dutta was bought out of his memories, he smiled at this girl before him, she understood what I hadn't even told her, this is what he meant, had he been telling someone like Supriya... who had suddenly popped into his head, she wouldn't have a clue on what I was on about, but like he'd assumed Naku always heard what hadn't been said, and as he gulped a large measure of the Whiskey, and clenched his teeth as the flavour of the spirit hit the back of his throat and stretched his lips to divert the attention elsewhere, he looked at her and replied sayi kaha tune, mujhe kisine bohut bara dokha diya hai, aur woh kisi aur ne nahin, meri hi kismat ne mere saath kiya hai, maine bhi aise bohut saare patharo ke saamne praathna ki thi lekin uss pathar ne kya kar liya, mere haath mein ek bandhook dakhel thi, aur mujhe bhi apni tarah ek pathar bana diya he finished not trying to shout and keep his anger at bay, but his eyes remained red as though all the blood from his body had gathered in the small veins in the whites of his eyes, okay now she's gonna run thought Dutta as he could feel the blood rushing to his face in attempt to control his anger, but to his surprise Naku didn't move but instead got up and went close to him and answered calmly, Saab...., sab ke raaste alag hote hai, ek ghatna kisi doosri ghatna se joori hoti hai, uska ehsaas hume pehle nahin pata hota lekin baad mein jab us ghatna se kuch acha hota hain, to hum uss pal ko kos te nahiin Saab, balke us pal ka hum shukar karte hain ke woh pal humari zindagi main aaya to sahi, she said as she was some celestial being with a halo over her head which would forever remain invisible. As Dutta stared at her in awestruck wonder not knowing what to say, she proceeded thinking his silence was a sign for her to carry on, and so she did.....Saab maana ke aap ka raasta acha nahin tha, lekin yeh to dekhiye ke aapne kya kya nahin paya, apne parivaar keliye khusiyan, apni behenon ki shaadiyan aur ache pati, aur Roop keliye ek acha bavishya, ek bhai jaisa dost....Baji ke roop mein, aur....aur Ayi Sahib, aapka poora parivaar hai aapke saath, .......haan lekin mere parivaar pe jo mushkile aati hai, woh bhi to meri wajeh se aati hai, he debated, lekin aap unhe un muskilo se bachaate bhi to ho Saab, aapki zindagi main har cheez khoobsurat hai Saab, lekin aapko un cheezo ko dekhne keliye apna nazariya badal na hoga Saab, aapko is nafrat ke parde ko hamesha keliye hathana hoga Saab, taake jab aap piyo to jis dokhe ki ghoonj abhi bhi apke kaane me baj ti hai, usse hamesha keliye mitha diya jaye...ek bure sapne ki tarah, she finished not knowing Dutta's constant stare on her, who was observing her lost in herself as if she let the words come out of her mouth without thinking but yet she was attached with everything she had said. As Naku looked up at Dutta staring at her he answered with a simple but chilling voice 'naaye Naku....yeh nafrat hi hai jo logo ka dar qayam rakthi hai, Dutta Bhau ke naam se mere dushmano ke pero tale zameen nikhal jaati hai, isse main kaise chod du Naku, jis pathar ki murat ke saamne maine kabhi haath jore te usse kuch diya to nahi lekin iss Dutta ko pathar zaroor bana diya.....he finshed at the same time drinking the remaining spirit.
Nahin Saab, aap galat ho, ho sakta hai ke aap khud ko pathar samjho lekin yeh such nahin hai, aap dekhna Saab iss pathat ke shareer ke piche ek din aap ka dil zaroor dadhke ga, aur aapke dil ki awaaz aap ke kaano tak pohanche gi Saab aap dekhna, jab aap ki zindagi mein koi pyar karne wali ayegi to woh khud apna raasta aap ke dil tak dhoond legi Saab aur aapko pata bhi nahin chalega, aur jab aapka dil aap ko awaaz dega tab aap ko us pyar ka ehsaas hoga, jis nafrat ko aap apne seene mein paal kar rakhi hai woh ek aisa zehreela zeher hai jo aap ko ander hi ander khaye jaa raha hai aur aap yeh soch te ho ke jab iss nafrat ki aag mein aap apne dushmano pe vaar karte ho, tab aapko yeh pata nahin chalta ke ke uss vaar ka asar aap par bhi hota hai Saab, yeh nafrat sirf pyar se mitt sakti hai, aur Bappa zaroor apki zindagi mein pyar ki roshini phehelayga, she finished smoothly but innocently. Meri zindagi main pyar keliye koi jageh nahin hai Naku, yeh zeher mere shareer mein bhar gaya hai meri rago mein dor raha hai, aur tere Bappa agar chahe bhi to woh din kabhi bhi meri zindagi mein nahin layega, kyunki mere haath khoon se range hai hain, aur jahan tak mujhe pata hai, tera Bappa khoonion keliye apna waqt barbaad nahin karta, he said looking at both his hands as though he could see the blood dripping from them visually. Phir se galat Saab....Bappa par bharosa rakho woh kabhi aap ke saat galat nahin hone denge, aur rahi baat aap ke khooni hone tho aap ne kabhi kisi bekasoor khi jaan li hai Saab she questioned rhetorically, nahin na she answered knowing he wouldn't answer, and than carried on, aap ne mere se poocha ke yeh vrat kyun rakha hai, and than she explained one of the theories behind Shivarathri and narrated to him that on the night of Shivarathri a hunter in Varanasi had left for bringing food for his family, and on the way he'd saw a deer and was about to shoot it down with his bow and arrow, just when the deer stopped and told the hunter that he has left his family behind and please spare him for the moment, and let him tell his family where he is and how he been hunted and promised the hunter that he'll be back, and as the hunter waited he climbed a bel patra tree and as he waited he plucked the bel leaves off the tree and let them fall to the floor, and than he another deer had come who had become his target again, but than it occured that she was the wife of the previous deer and told him the same and left, and than finally the their child also came within the hunters range and agreed of the same with him also, feeling foolish the hunter had waited all night and cried for his family for they were starving as was he, his tears had fallen to the ground all night long and so did the leaves he'd plucked, and he sat thinking he'd been betrayed and mocked by the deer. But than to his surprise they returned as per their promise and so he was able to fend for his family afterall, as he had sold the meat at the market and in return was able to feed his starved family, but before he had eaten a stranger had asked for the food, which he gave some to first and than carried on with his own meal. And so the story goes that when this hunter had died, two of Lord Shiva's messengers had told him of the vrat he had kept on the night of Shivaratri unknowingly and had completed a full abishek of a Shivling that was buried beneath the pile of leaves and dirt as he had offered bel leaves and washed the ling with his tears all night long, which pleased Lord Shiva immensly, regardless of the fact that he'd fasted unconsciously, and than he was taken to Lord Shiva's abode where he served Shiv ji, but than when his karma's had run out he were to be born again but this time as a King, King Chitrabhanu, who had the gift of remembering his past life, and recited the story further which spread as per hear say, she finished, and looked up at a very confused Dutta, who she could tell had been interested in her story, but couldn't understand why she were telling it to him. Yeh sab to theek hai Naku, lekin is kahani se mere se kya kena dena hai, main kuch samjha nahin...he urged as he wanted to know why she had narrated an ancient story to him, and couldn't help thinking, she never failed to confuse him.
Than Naku explained to him the reason she told him this story, you see Saab don't you think it was weird that Lord Shiva didn't punish the hunter for killng the innocent deer.....she started as she looked at Dutta, who's brows were beginning to take their normal shape, understanding a little of her point, and she continued, no he didn't punish him and do you know why Saab....because that was his job, it was his livelihood to kill and sell animals and birds, although they were innocent, but still he were doing no wrong because that was his method of fending for his family, as she looked at Dutta thinking he would have understood by now, but could clearly tell he didn't, and than decided to tell him herself, and said, because you and the hunter from the story are the same Saab, he did a job he didn't approve of but that was his dharam his way of providing his family with two meals a day and making sure they had a comfortable life regardless of the lives he was taking, and you are also doing a job you don't approve of Saab but you are fending for your family, but the difference is Saab you are not fending just for your family, you are fending for your people and entire villages where those people give you good wishes all the time, and you are not killing innocent beings you are killing murderers, ruthless people who use their strength against the weak, so you see Saab you are doing much greater good than the hunter in the story 'cause this is your dharam, it is in you're nature, she convinced him sounding more and more enthusiastic by each word.
Wow thought Dutta she'd left him dumbfounded, he was speechless, was this girl for real she'd just told a ruthless gangster that he were a saint, and they way she explained it to him, he couldn't find anyway out of it, since Naku had arrived there has never been a moment where she hadn't surprised him be it in any angle or any situation, she always showed you an angle of a situation which one never knew existed thought Dutta to himself, and than finally asked her how do you do it, how is it that you manage to see a situation with such different views he questioned her still amazed at the small package before him. Naku had simply told him Saab you look at a situation from a view as it is presented to you from one angle, and I guess I look at a situation from both the angles and if it makes no sense, you create a third angle in which to look at it from, she said as she shrugged both her shoulders as if she didn't know what to say but said it anyway, and further added for exapmle Saab, she said as she looked at him now sitting down drinking from his second glass of Whiskey, she asked him is your glass before you half empty, or is it half full.... she riddled, and as he glanced over to his glass and thought what is she trying to say now, and replied, well I would say the glass if half empty, and than she smiled and said see Saab you're wrong again, not that there is a right answer to this riddle, but in my point of view the glass would be half full, as they both looked at the half full glass now, she explained her view in detail and told him see Saab this is where we are different, you saying the glass is half empty shows how you see the negativity in a situation, where the positivity shows clearly in the form of the glass being half full which you chose not to acknowledge, and I saw the half filled glass instantly seeing the beneficial side of it that you still have most of it left in your glass rather than it being almost finshed, so you see the amount will remain the same but the way you see something changes it, and somewhere defines who you are, she finished.
As Naku was goning to make her way to leave with the empty dishes, Dutta asked Naku, one more thing, he said Naku agar tu apne Bappa pe itna vishwas karti hai to tujhe kyun lagta hai ke tere Bappa ne tujhe yahan apne Baba ki sazaa buhgat ne keliye bheja, tumhe nahin lagta ke tere Bappa ko apni bhakt ki raksha karni chahiye thi...he questioned sarcastically and curious to see how she would defend her Bappa, when Naku simply smiled and said Saab, ....without turning around to face him, shahid Bappa ne mujhe yahan bhej kar hi meri raksha ki ho, she said smiling at her fate, when Dutta again intervened not quite knowing what she meant by that but than he never did, but it seemed like there was something he didn't know about, to which she was referring to, and said agar tere Bappa ne tujhe yahan bhej kar teri raksha ki hoti, to uss din tera accident nahin hota he said irritated that she refused to give in, and she replied that sahi kaha aap ne Saab, lekin phir Bappa ne ek farishta bhi to bheja tha mujhe bachane keliye....she finished and left at the same time, not waiting to see what Dutta would day in return.
She was definately unique, she looked at things so differently, that one could never imagine the examples she could demonstrate with such ease and simplicity, she had summed his whole life before him and than told him he was no criminal......could that be, how her mind was able to see the best parts in every situation...he loved that about her, Dutta thought about the things she'd said to him, some irritated him and some had made him smile upon thinking about them, could there be such girls he thought to himself, as he smiled contently, and said no, no one's mind could be more beatiful than Naku's "there's only you Naku", he said aloud, confirming to himself she was the only one of her kind.
As Naku had left she thought of the hatred that filled Dutta, he wanted so much to be a normal person and it showed, and he definately had a heart which he refused to believe so, but Naku didn't agree, she could hear his heart's painful cries from his bitter words, that had been locked away like a prisoner behind this man who called himself stonehearted, but deep down Naku knew he had a heart which will become free one day when love will walk its way through with ease and wash away the poison running through his veins and will act as the key for his caged heart, he'd kept prisoner.
As Aye Sahib sat in her room and looked at the pictures of the girl's that had come for Dutta's proposal's, there was one picture that drawed her attention, she remembered Baji's words when she had shown him the picture, and had said something about how she was the one Dutta had met somewhat two weeks ago and....., and than he left as his phone had rang. As she eyed Supriya's picture, Aye Sahib had decided she was to be her bahu, and Dutta's lawful wedded wife, as she smiled to herself and recited aye jagdamba, ayi jagdamba, to herself, she couldn't wait for tomorrow for she would tell Dutta of her choice, and preferablly his too, and she surely won't let him refuse this time, there couldn't be anyone more beautiful and sushil than Supriya thought Aye Sahib, and than Baji had said the two know each other, which must mean they were fond of each other, and Supriya didn't seem like the girls who had a bad reputation, she looked like the perfect bahu that will carry Dutta's lineage forward, thought Aye Sahib to herself, not being able to grip on to her patience for tomorrow.
