Part Fifteen
The next day Khanak must have looked as bad as she felt for Khusboo suggested she come to the doctor with her.
"Kya aap theek to hai na?," Khanak inquired.
" You are the one that looks like she could use a doctor. I have to go for a regular check up anyways. I am feeling a bit queasy and have been eating more imli and aajar recently. I have to figure out why I am feeling this way for certain before I tell anyone else," she declared.
Khanak smiled knowlingly.
" Don't say anything just yet Khanak. I'll tell Mummyji and Daadi we are going for regular check ups, by tomorrow we should have the results back,," Khushboo said softly.
" Theek hai Bhabhi, appointment kab hai?"
" I just have to let them know you are also coming. We'll go in the hour. By the way have you been feeling queasy too?," she asked .
Khanak nodded.
" Would it be sweet if we were both expecting? Hopefully I am due before you are if we really are pregnant. It would be strange if you had a baby before me," Khushboo stated.
Khanak tried to tell her she and Shantanu could not be possibly expecting. It was probably the food from last night. Khushboo told her to be ready soon while she went to let Madhavi know they were going to the doctor.
Daadi came out of the prayer room and looked at Khanak with concern.
" Khanak beta tum theek toh ho? Madhavi told me you had an accident a few days before I got here," she said.
Khanak smiled slightly. She was really glad Daadi was here. If she and Khushboo both ended up being pregnant, they would need her love and advice.
" Khushboo Bhabhi aur main jarenge doctor ke paas," Khanak assured her. ( Khushboo and me are going to the doctor's)
Daadi told them to go carefully when Khushboo came back to join Khanak The two women were nervous as to what they would find out.
The doctor examined them both and took urine and blood samples.
"Khushboo and Khanak we will call you by tomorrow afternoon with the results. Please take care of your health now. Even if a woman is not pregnant it is important to stay dehydrated and eat healthy," the doctor stated.
They thanked the doctor and headed back home. Khanak did not have college today as it was Sunday. Shantanu had gone with Akashay and Sunil to watch cricket at a friend's place.
The men returned after watching the match. Madhavi and Khanak placed snacks in the family room as they walked in.
" Madhavi,Ma ab sub ka din kaisa tha?," Sunil inquired.
"Theek tha. Bus Khushboo aur Khanak doctor ke paas gayi thi. We have just been cooking and taking it easy today," she answered.
" Hamari bahus toh theek hain na?," Sunil inquired.
" Arre Sunil beta, regular check up tha. Agar kuch hai toh huhme thori dher main pata lag jaye gaya," his mother stated, ( Hey Sunil my son it was a regular check up. If there is something else we will find out soon enough.)
Shantanu looked puzzled at his Daadi.
"Kya matlab Daadi?," he asked as he sat down beside her.
" Shantanu what always happens after marriage,children!,"Madhavi declared.
Sunil chuckled.
" Shantanu has a lot of maturing to do before he has a child of his own," Sunil quipped.
" Dad!," Shantanu said with exasperation.
"Why don't you and Akshay look for your wives. Khanak was just here. Where is Khushboo?," Sunil inquired.
" Don't know where Khushboo is. Khanak was just here. Both of them have been feeling sick today," Madhavi commented thoughtfully.
" Main zara Khushboo ko dekta hoon," Akshay said before excusing himself.
Shantanu was lost in thought for a moment. What if Khanak was pregnant? Wait a minute could it be possible that she was?
Khanak emerged from the washroom. She wasn't as queasy as before but felt weak.
She noticed Shantanu was lost in thought.
" Shantanu aap theek toh ho na?," she inquired.
He snapped out of it and smiled slightly at her.
" Main theek hoon, lekein maine suna tum doctor ke paas gayi thi? ( I am fine but I heard you went to the doctor's?)
Khanak paused for a second. She didn't want to him to start freaking out.
" I mostly went to give Khushboo Bhabhi company. I am fine now just feeling a bit weak," she assured him.
"Khanak maybe it's better you rest upstairs for now. Shantanu beta take her upstairs," Daadi said.
Shantanu offered his hand to Khanak. She started to get up and felt dizzy. He realized this and leaned over to give her support before she could slip to the floor.
He had seen in movies that somehow girls often fainted when they were pregnant. Was she pregnant?
Madhavi, Sunil and Daadi were alarmed came towards the couple to make sure Shantanu was able to help her keep her balance.
Khanak regained her composure and was able to sit down on the couch again. Sunil passed over a glass of water. Khanak drank some.
Shantanu muttered something and said he would be right back. Some minutes passed he had not returned.
" Yeh Shantanu kahaan chale gaya. Khanak is not feeling well and he is off doing something else," Daadi commented.
Madhavi and Sunil went upstairs to check and found the room locked.
Inside the room Shantanu was pacing around in deep thought. He was not ready to be a father. He needed to shut out the world and figure out if it were possible that Khanak could be pregnant.
He heard his parents calling for him.
" I just need some time alone. I'll be out soon," he called out.
It had started to rain heavily outside now. Khanak felt somewhat better and decided to check on Shantanu herself.
Hearing the commotion Madhavi and Sunil were causing, Akshay and Khushboo also joined them in making Shantanu open the door.
Meanwhile Shantanu was fidgeting wishing they would leave him alone.
" Did he seem depressed today?," Madhavi inquired.
"Of course not Madhavi. Shan has always been very lively. He would say something if he was disturbed," Sunil insisted.
" No way Mom. Shan kuch aisa vasa nahin kare gaya," Akshay assured her.
Khanak came up behind them.
" What is going on?," Khanak inquired.
" Shantanu is not opening the door!," they all said together.
Khanak thought for a moment and she smiled to herself.
" I know how to make him open the door!," she thought to herself.
After a few minutes it seemed like his family had gotten tired of bothering for the mean time.
" Great now I can think. What needs to change if I am going to become a father," Shantanu thought to himself.
Suddenly he heard some noise by the window. He froze for a second before edging towards it.
" Beta Shaan you are the man in the relationship you have to be the strong one," he told himself.
He lifted the curtain only to find a soaked Khanak trying to hop into the room. She almost tripped but by placing one hand on his shoulder made it out fine.
" Khanak yeh tum kya kari thi? You shouldn't be climbing through windows in this condition,"he stammered. ( Khanak what were you doing?)
Khanak eyed him strangely.
" What condition?," she inquired meekly.
"Khanak mujhe parshaan mat karo! You what I am talking about," Shantanu declared.
She shook her head.
"Look let's open the door and tell everyone you are fine. Mummyji thinks you are depressed and were going to do something to yourself," Khanak stated.
Shantanu looked at her appalled.
" Dekho Khanak main tumhe itni jaldi chorne nahin wala, You are expecting and it would just be so selfish of me to do something so stupid. Besides I love you a lot," he declared.
She looked at him firmly.
"Phir usi pyaar ke kasam, aap yeh dawarsa khol gayene abhi!," she insisted. ( For the sake of that love you will open this door now)
Shantanu sighed and opened the door.
Everyone stood stunned looking at him. Madhavi quickly hugged him.
"Khanak you came through the window?,"Khushboo exclaimed.
Everyone turned to Khanak and was shocked at how soaked she was.
Sunil stiffened and thought it was time for a small lecture.
" Shaan beta, this is the first time I have seen a girl have to climb through a window to make sure her husband was fine. Be a man and take care of Khanak. We all are going back downstairs and will be waiting for the both of you," he stated.
"Khanak please go change before you get a fever. Shantanu stop troubling Khanak. Everyone always points fingers at the mother when her child doesn't know how to respect and care for others,"Madhavi declared before they all left.
Shantanu sighed as he locked the door . He turned to walk back towards Khanak.
