Part Sixteen

Shantanu saw Khanak walking towards the balcony.

"Khanak you should go change," he said.

Instead she didn't seem to hear him as she leaned forward to let the rain fall on her face.

" Tumhe pata hai ki mujhe bheegan pasand nahin hai," he said ( You know I hate being drenched)

She turned back towards him.

" What about Dhulwadi when you had a bath in front of all the villagers? What about when you came close to me that fateful night by the gate and what about that time you thought I drowned and you jumped in the pool after I slipped in?," she said as she came closer.

Shantanu simply stared into her eyes. He realized if he asked her something now she would not hesitate to tell him the truth.

"Khanak tumhe meri kasam, tell me are you pregnant?," he inquired.

Khanak smiled slightly.

" Shantanu honestly I do not know if I am. It could be the food from last night or the tension I had after Rahul met us in the parking lot. I doubt I am. Since this morning I have thought about it and I don't think I am," she stated.

Shantanu placed his hand on her stomach.

" One day I do want to see you glowing and with a nice round belly, with our child growing inside of you," he whispered into her ear.

The rain had started to pour down more. They were both drenched by now.

She turned to face him.

" So if we find out that I am pregnant would you want the baby?," she asked as she removed his hand from her waist.

She started to walk away but then he grabbed her wrist.

"Khanak no matter when it happens, I will always love you and our child," Shantanu promised her.

They went back into their room to get changed.

Everyone was waiting for them downstairs for dinner.

" Sub kuch theek to hai na?," Daadi inquired.

" Jee Daadi abhi sub kuch theek hai," Shantanu said flashing Khanak a smile.

Khushboo nudged and winked at Akshay.

" What are you doing Khushboo?," Akshay whispered.

"Looks like Shantanu also went and got drenched," she hissed indicating Shantanu's wet hair.

Akshay looked at his younger brother and then shook his head at his wife.

Khushboo spoke up anyway.

" Shantanu did you take a shower just now or did you go out in this weather?," she inquired.

Daadi, Madhavi and Sunil looked at Khushboo curiously and then looked towards Shantanu.

" Nahin Bhabhi. I just had a shower because I was sweating lot when I was pacing," Shantanu stated.

Sunil cleared his throat.

"Khushboo relax. I think we should all focus on eating this great food."

Everyone noticed Khanak blushing a bit but decided to continue eating.

After dinner, everyone retired to their respective rooms. Harilal brought them ginger tea.

" Daadi said it's best for you two to drink this before sleeping," he said firmly.

Khanak took the tray from him and sat it down on the table beside the couch. Shantanu joined her there.

" Shantanu I don't know why I keep getting sick all the time. I want to feel healthy again," she said.

He reached over and touched her forehead.

" Doesn't seem like you have a fever," he quipped.

" Shantanu mujhe lagta hai ki mere grae chal re hain," she declared.

( Shantanu I think I have having bad luck these days)

He looked at her quizzically.

" You really believe in all that where certain times or days are bad luck for certain people?," he asked.

She shrugged.

"Not sure," she said as she sipped her tea.

After they drank the tea they settled down to go to bed. Shantanu couldn't sleep so he started doing push ups.

Khanak sat up in bed and watched him. Her eyes started to get droopy and she fell asleep in an awkward position.

Shantanu finished his sit ups and then got up to see Khanak lying all scrunched up. He shook his head and smiled at her sleeping form as he shifted her into a proper position and covered her up.

He went to his side of the bed and laid down beside her. He gazed at her in wonderment. He looked towards her stomach and wondered what news they would get tomorrow.

"Main hamesha tumara saath dunga," he said to her sleeping form.

Khanak slept through the night and felt better in the morning despite getting drenched the night before.

Shantanu came into the kitchen as she was making breakfast for everyone.

" Aap ko kuch chaiye? Let me know and I will bring it to you," she said nonchantly as she worked.

" I don't need anything Khanak. How are you feeling?," he inquired.

" Main theek hoon. I slept through the night this time," she said with a bright smile.

Suddenly the phone rang and she stopped what she was doing and started to run towards it.

"Khanak aram se!," Shantanu called after her.

She picked up the phone. It was the doctor.

Shantanu arrived in time to see Khanak look shocked and then she smiled as she turned to face him.

She suddenly turned solemn and wrapped her arms around him.

"Khanak kya hua?," Shantanu inquired because of her strange behavior.

She pulled back looked at him firmly before bursting with laughter. Then she swayed this way and that.

He feared she would fall over.

"Khanak aram se. Tell me what's the news," he urged.

She stopped laughing and composed herself.

" After all that crazy stuff we all did last night, this seems kind of funny. I mean you were so parshaan about becoming a dad," she retorted.

Shantanu held her by her arms and then cupped her chin.

"Bolo results kya hai," he said.

She composed herself.

" Don't cancel the tickets for Switzerland ," she said before running off.

Khanak went up to Akshay and Khushboo's room.

" Bhabhi open the door. The doctor's office called," Khanak said as she knocked on the door.

Khushboo opened the door suddenly. Khanak almost fell back, but kept her balance.

" Khanak I am sorry are you all right?," Khushboo inquired with concern.

" Jee main theek hoon. They called to say you are positive and I am negative," Khanak said.

Khushboo looked at her wide eyed.

" Wow! So I was right! Akshay already left for the office. I better call him now!," she exclaimed as she hugged Khanak.

Khushboo went off to talk Akshay's ears off.

Khanak smiled to herself. She would be someone's chachi soon!

She walked back towards the staircase. She would let Khushboo tell everyone the news.
