The word "Superstar" is used so loosely today.
A " Superstar" is an actor who draws hoardes of people just based on his popularity. The greatest display of "Superstardom" in recent years has been Salman Khan in "Dabanng" and Sunny Deol in "Gadar". No big banners, no crazy media hype, no A-listers to share the credit. Just plain raw appeal.
Aamir Khan and Shahrukh Khan are untouchable in Multiplexes and over-seas while Salman is the hero of the masses. Shahrukh always has a big banner backing him up though. Akshay Kumar is some-where in between. Hrithik does well when presented well. He needs big banners though.
What pisses me off is when they call Abhishek Bachchan and Shahid Kapoor superstars. AB Jr has been consistently giving the biggest disasters year after year "Drona", "Raavan", "KHJJS", "Delhi6" and if that wasn't enough watch " National Bingo". How he still gets work is beyond me? Nobody wants to see him. Even his hyped movies like "Dostana" and "Sarkar Raj" are barely average.
Shahid Kapoor is extremely over-rated again. "Dance pe Chance", "Dil Bole Hadippa", "Paathshaala" mixed in with a few below average grossers like " Kaminey" and "Badmaash Company" . Superstar you are not,sir.
Which brings me to the two most underrated actors in the industry. Saif Ali Khan and Ajay Devgan. Their reords speak for themselves but get no media hype which is highly biased in favor of the bachchans and SRK.
I mean is anyone more versatile that Saifu. Two movies. Hum Tum and Omkara. Two roles that are pole apart. Two National Awards. He's just as good as any Khan. He doesn't get the exposure he deserves.
And Mr.Devgan just keeps doing his thing year after year. Keeps his investors happy. Yet doesn't get half the media coverage that a flop actor like AB Jr does.
