"GT, does that hurt? It looks like it hurts." JD was sitting cross-legged on Geet's bed, with his head resting in his hands, watching as Geet's hair was being curled by the beautician.
"Does what hurt?" asked Geet, confused.
"That curly machine."
Geet laughed when she realized that JD was talking about the curling iron. "No, JD, it doesn't hurt."
"It looks like it does," he replied in his childish voice.
JD stared intently, fascinated by the process Geet was going through. When he got ready for church, the most he had to do was take a bath, get dressed, and let GT comb his hair. GT had a lady come and do all kinds of stuff to her, putting things on her face and in her hair, using that funny machine and making curls everywhere. Everything the lady did made GT not look like GT anymore. She still talked like GT, so JD wasn't bothered.
"GT, you sure have to do a lot to go to a party. Is this a special party?"
Geet smiled and said it was a special party. She explained how the people who were at the party were going to look at special items, and then maybe buy them. The money would be used to help people who needed help. JD wanted to know if she was going to buy anything. Geet told him that she wouldn't, but that maybe his uncle would.
"Are you going to wear your sparkly?"
"My sparkly?"
"You know, GT. The sparkly bracelet Uncle got you for Valetines Day."
"Oh. Yes, I'm going to wear it. As soon as my make up is finished, I'll put my jewelry on."
"GT, why are you putting make up? That black stuff looks sticky."
GT smiled at JD's innocent description of mascara. "Women put make up to make themselves look pretty."
"But GT, you are pretty. You are the prettiest. When you put all this stuff, you don't look like my GT anymore."
JD sounded so forlorn, Geet couldn't help but laugh. "Don't worry, JD, I'm still your GT. Now, before I leave, I want your promise that you will follow what Nakul tells you. You get a half hour of TV and then you are to brush your teeth and go right to bed. I expect you not to cause any trouble, and I will be asking Nakul how you behaved when I get home."

One of the things Maan hated about attending parties and functions is that women were always late. It was bad enough waiting for one, but tonight he was stuck pacing up and down the front hall, waiting for two. Maybe, if he pinched himself hard enough he would wake up from this bad dream. He tried, but it didn't work.
When Dadi came down the stairs alone, he groaned and asked, "Isn't Geet ready yet?"
"Maan beta, be patient. She'll be down as soon as she is ready."
Maan continued to pace, unable to ignore the dread he felt about this auction. Parties were a waste of time, and it seemed like something bad always happened at these stupid social events. There was a time when he found this type of entertainment enjoyable, but ever since his disastrous attempt to propose to Sameera, Maan had shunned large social gatherings.
The thought of Sameera left a nasty taste in Maan's mouth. He was on the verge of telling Dadi that she could go without him, when his gaze was caught by a figure at the top of the stairs. Geet Handa had completely disappeared and a breathtakingly beautiful siren had taken her place. As she descended slowly down the staircase, Maan couldn't help but be mesmerized by the tantalizing sight of her leg, visible due to the skirt's slit. He'd actually forgotten that the slit went as high as it did. It allowed him to see the creamy expanse of her leg all the way up to the middle of her thigh, and had him remembering the last time he had seen her wearing the dress. By the way Geet's face turned pink at his continued gaze, he knew she was also remembering. Her eyes met his for only a brief moment, before quickly moving to look away from him and at Dadi instead. She might try to ignore him, but he wasn't going to have any of that.
"This isn't England, and we're not going to see the queen, that you had to spend hours getting ready. What took you so long?" he demanded, knowing that she wouldn't care for his tone of voice.
She didn't disappoint him, quickly turning to him and retorting back, "I wasn't taking hours to get ready! I had to see that JD had his bath and put on his pajamas, then quickly get ready before I settled him for his half hour of evening cartoons. It wasn't easy, you know. He's been apprehensive about me going anywhere, ever since the accident."
"That wasn't an accident, it was an attack, which never would have happened if you hadn't been stupid enough to live in that dump."
"It was not a dump!"
"Well, it certainly looked like a dump to me."
"Children, children, let's not turn this into World War III," interrupted Dadi calmly. "We're going to a charity event, so let's try to have a pleasant night, okay?"
"Okay, Dadi," both answered, meekly.
"Geet, you're looking so pretty tonight, and I love seeing you wearing my diamond necklace and earrings."
"Thank you, Dadi, and thank you for letting me borrow them."
"Oh, no need for thanks, Beti, I was glad to let you have them." Observing a silent Maan, Dadi spoke up, asking, "Aren't you going to tell Geet how wonderful she is looking?"
"Of course she is looking very good, but I'm a bit surprised that she chose to wear this dress. I wonder why she chose this one, and not one of the others?" While speaking, Maan had positioned himself, so that he was slightly behind Geet, allowing him to run his fingertips lightly up her back without Dadi noticing.
Geet jumped at the contact, and gave him a brief look filled with apprehension, before saying a bit loudly that they were getting late. As Dadi and Geet headed off to get their coats, Maan smiled. It was clear to him that he made Geet nervous, especially whenever he made physical contact. Perhaps this night would not be so difficult to endure after all.
