Tum Kaun Ho?

A Maaneet Fan Fic

Chapter 27
Mar. 2, 2011 8:59 pm

Beep. Beep.

Geet picked up her phone when she heard it beep. She checked the message and saw who it was from. Quickly typing a response she answered the message, and then when back to laying on her bed. She laid there for only a minute, thinking, when her phone rang.

"What did you mean by that text?" asked Naintara, before Geet could even say hello.

"Di, please. Not tonight. I'm tired. We'll talk later."

"But..."

Geet ended the call, and set the phone back down on the bedside table. She knew what Naintara wanted, but she was in no mood to oblige. The dress shopping incident had shaken her badly. She tried and tried to understand what Maan was doing, but had no luck. For two days she had avoided him as much as possible, in an effort to give herself time to figure out what was going on.

Geet had thought and thought and finally concluded one thing. Even though Maan was only pretending that she was his girlfriend, that couldn't possibly explain all his behavior. She knew him pretty well. No amount of pretense, or making Dadi happy, would cause him to come as close to her has he had. The only explanation that made any sense, was that he was attracted to her.

Geet didn't know how she felt about that. Never in her wildest dreams would she have thought that Maan could ever be even slightly interested in her. It was a hard realization to wrap her mind around. She couldn't begin to figure out what his intentions were. She was fairly certain that he was not interested in having a real relationship. However, he was not the kind of person who engaged in casual flings, at least she didn't think he was. After what happened with Sameera, she couldn't quite be sure, but she thought it unlikely. Another possibility was that he had not thought about it one way or the other. Though this option seemed the least like her extremely analytical boss, based on his recent behavior, it was plausible.

Regardless, Geet could feel herself pulled into a very difficult situation. Maan barely knew anything about her, and certainly not anything of her early life. No one did. Geet Handa and the life she lead pre-Chicago was something that Geet tried very hard not to dwell on. She definitely wouldn't be able to discuss it with Maan.

"He probably isn't even interested," she mumbled to herself, but that didn't ease her anxiety. Geet couldn't help but feel that things were heading towards an impossible situation.

Mar. 2, 2011 9:22 pm

"Geet, Geet!"

"Pinky?" Geet jerked up from her bed, unable to believe that she was hearing her best friend's voice this late at night. Walking over to her bedroom door, she opened it just in time for Pinky to breeze in.

Before Geet even had a chance to speak, Pinky had grabbed her arm and started dragging her down the hall. "Pinky, what are you doing here?"

"Naintara Di called me. She knew that you were just making excuses and wouldn't be asleep yet. She wants to see your dresses. Even I want to see them. Now, don't argue with me, just get your laptop and bring it to your room."

The mention of Geet's dresses couldn't help but bring to the fore the memories that had never been far from Geet's mind the last two days. When Dadi had asked her to choose between the three dresses, Geet had been so flustered by what happened between her and Maan in the dressing room, that she had been unable to decide. Finally, Dadi had declared that if Geet couldn't choose, they would purchase all three. She had insisted on buying matching shoes and purses, so instead of one very expensive outfit, Geet had wound up with three.

Mar. 2, 2011 10:05 pm Chicago, Mar. 3, 2011 9:35 am Delhi

"Geet, when you go to these high society events, you have to be careful. There are some nice people, but mostly there are only sharks masquerading as nice people."

"That's true," chimed in Pinky. "You remember all those women who shopped at the store when you worked there. They act like they're the queen of England and our little store should be eternally grateful for their patronage. Butter wouldn't melt in their mouth, and that's putting it extremely politely. I can't wait until Adi gets promoted and I can finally quit. Couture Express hasn't been the same since Dad retired. The only good thing is that Sasha wasn't made manager like she bragged she would be."

"When is Adi getting promoted?" asked Geet.

"When they finally get the new facility built."

"Pinky," interrupted Naintara sharply. "Don't aide Geet in changing the subject. I'm trying to make sure that she's ready for Saturday."

"Sorry," replied Pinky.

"Now, Geet, all the women you meet are going to ooze confidence. They think their money and position make them the creme de la creme of the human race. They think that makes them better than you, but they're wrong."

"They are?"

"Of course!"

"But I'm just a small town girl from Wisconsin. They have much more power and influence than I do."

"Nonsense! Tell yourself that, and your confidence will wither in front of those plastic dolls. No, you are Geet Handa. You are the sweetest, nicest, most patient girl I have ever known. You are intelligent and can handle Maan veerji's business concerns better than the best personal assistant ever made. You handle all Khurana household matters so smoothly, even Dadi couldn't do as good. You are the reason that JD is so well adjusted and thriving. We all love you, and that is much more important than any amount of money or power those so called socialites have." Geet blushed under Naintara's praise, but she wasn't finished. "Don't forget. You were the one who was able to convince Maan Singh Khurana to attend this function, something no one else was able to do. If that isn't power, I don't know what is."

"Naintara Di is right, Geet. You're totally awesome, and can take all of those silly women any day."

"Thanks, Pinky," murmured Geet shyly.

"What are friends for?"

"Now, the main question is which of the dresses are you going to wear to this auction. It's your first public appearance as Maan veerji's girlfriend, so you definitely have to wow them."

"My first public appearance? But, I went to that Christmas party and we had dinner on Valentine's Day."

"Geet, those might have been social occasions, but they were not at all the same as this charity auction. It's a big deal. Members of the press will definitely be there, and it's possible that you will even end up on TV. I don't mean to scare you," added Naintara when she saw nervousness appear on Geet's face, "but believe me, it is important to get things right."

Naintara had seen Geet try on all three dresses, and thought that she looked fabulous in all of them. However, it was a little difficult to decide between them from the little Skype screen on her computer. She order Geet and Pinky to hang the dresses side by side and let her examine them together. Geet tried to have a say in the decision, but Naintara wouldn't have it. She was much more experienced in these matters, and as Geet's di she intended to give her help to the greatest extent possible.

"The white one is very pretty, but it looks really bride like, and I don't think white would be an appropriate color for this kind of event. The green color looks wonderful on you, but the design reminds me of a prom dress. I think that this would be a better choice for an out and out party, not a charity function. That leaves the black, which of course is absolutely stunning. The long sleeves are great too, as it's still winter and quite cold. Put it on again, and practice walking around in it. You need to be 100% comfortable. It has to feel like a second skin."

Geet reluctantly complied with Naintara's demand, and after quite a few minutes of issuing directions, Naintara said, "Geet, that dress was made for you. You're going to look fabulous draped on Maan veerji's arm."

"Draped on his arm?" Geet frowned, not liking the picture those words created in her head.

"Naturally. You're his girlfriend. You need to be by his side the entire night, and believe me, I know his effect on women. If you don't want all the single women, and many of the married ones, to be all over him, you have to show that he's taken. If a woman has her arm linked with a man's that sends a clear signal to all the she-devils that 'this one is mine'."

Geet gulped at Naintara's words. She was supposed to stay with Maan the whole night? She was supposed to have constant physical contact with him? How? How was she supposed to do that and stay unaffected by him. Oh, this was the worst situation ever! Why did she agree with Dadi about this stupid charity auction?

Waise- Do you still watch the show?

Uh oh. Your question has caused me to get on my soap box. I rarely comment anything about the show in the forum because frankly, I dislike a lot of the immaturity that goes around. By immaturity I am not necessarily pointing fingers at our younger members. I think there is a great deal that is spouted by our "older members" that reeks of junior high and high school behavior. Unfortunately, I'm afraid that that is one of the bad consequences of the anonymity of the internet. People tend to say a lot of stuff in the vastness of cyberspace, that they would never say to someone's face. That said, I do sometimes express my feelings on the serial in my FF posts, as here at least I feel like I already have an audience that is willing to listen and potentially interested in what I have to say.

Do I still watch the show? ABSOLUTELY!

Fortunately for me, I do not contribute to TRPs, so if I don't feel like watching an episode here or there, or don't want to see the entire thing, it makes no difference one way or the other. However, I feel that Geet is 1000 times better than the other soaps that I do not watch (1 crore better than American soaps, less said, the better), so if I was in India, I would watch every episode and every repeat I could, and just mute if I couldn't stand a particular part.

Why do I still watch the show, when many others have declared they will quit, or are extremely disappointed with the way things have been going? I have many reasons and I will try to explain a few of the main ones.

CVS and all the accusations that have been made against them: First of all, can anyone tell me of a single Indian soap, past or present, where there was never a single blooper; all actors were perfect all the time; script, camera angles, direction, lighting, bg score... was super fabulous 100% of the time; all fans were happy all the time; and TRPs accurately reflected the love felt for the series? If you can please tell me, I would be very interested to watch it.

People, no show is perfect, and Geet is a daily show, with time constraints and many people working tirelessly to do the best they can. Many fans seem to expect to get a Friday or Saturday episode every day of the week. That is just not possible. And frankly, story wise, I think people forget that the PH can do nothing with the story that the Channel does not approve of. In fact, if the PH and the Channel disagree on where the story should go, or how it should get there, which one of them do you think wins? I don't like CV bashing, and I admire and respect them for their efforts. Even if they have not been perfect, I believe they have tried their best.

Geet's pregnancy: She should have a miscarriage, she should have a bump, how long has she been pregnant, etc. etc. People, come on, it is an Indian show, not real life. Things are not going to play out according to a real life time scale. If I had to guess, I would say that Geet is probably about 5 months pregnant at the moment. Regardless of what anyone says, it is perfectly normal for her not to be showing when wearing clothes, and come on, obviously we're not going to see her without clothes, eww. By the way, has anyone noticed that since marriage, none of Geet's salwars are form fitting? They are all quite loose, and if she is around 5 months as I suspect, the looseness would work quite well at hiding the baby bump (if there really was one).

Whether Drashti has problems with wearing a bump or not, I really don't care. Who wants poor Drashti to have to wear the darn thing every day she shoots for six months. This is Geet, people, you know that's what would happen. If she does have back problems, I can see where that would be difficult for her, and even if she doesn't, wearing something like that necessarily causes your body's center of gravity to change, and might have the potential to create problems. I'd much rather have Geet's pregnancy be one of those that is unnoticeable until the very end (they do happen in real life) than make our favorite actress go through something unpleasant, just because some fans don't think it's realistic without a bump showing. Do you people have no imagination? Does anyone even know that word anymore in this day and age?

My thoughts on miscarriage are that I think it unlikely to happen at this stage of the story. The pregnancy has been around too long, and I have a feeling that the PH/Channel or both want to explore the Dev/pregnancy angle a bit, which they can't do if there is a miscarriage. I doubt that they will do anything like Dev trying to take the baby away, or acquiring custody, but they might play with his starting to have feelings for the baby, vs. his trying to stay out of Maaneet's life. If they end up showing miscarriage, okay, that wouldn't be enough to make me stop watching, however I am personally against it. If you have read my other FF, you might have figured that out already.

Saint Dev should stop being a saint and turn negative: No matter how much you might be disgusted with his actions, and find him an unforgivable person, you can not deny that in real life people who have done things as bad as him, or even worse, have regretted their actions later and wanted to change. Therefore, I don't find it that difficult to accept that he does want to repent. As far as I'm concerned, it becomes another issue entirely if he has been faking all this time. Assuming that his remorse is genuine, I think if anyone cared to go back and watch the beginning epis, they would see that this remorse was gradually coming out even before he came back from Canada. It was certainly there when Maan asked him what he had done to pay off his debts, and that was before he knew Geet was in Delhi.

Yes, he was jealous of Maan, and blaming him for his situation, but that's very common for someone who has committed a sin, but is not downright evil to the core. (If you think that Dev is, that is your opinion, however I think that number wise, there are very few people in the world that are entirely evil). Anyway, someone like Dev who has done a very big crime, but has good inside him somewhere, tries to convince himself that he has done nothing wrong, and put the blame on others. Eventually, however, their conscience will start to prick at them, and if they listen to it, that is when they start to want to change.

What is the point of all this rambling about the Devil dhokebaaz? Well, I feel that it is at least logical that Dev is trying repent, so if that turns out to be true, I don't have a problem with them showing that. I think that regardless of whether he is positive or negative, he should still be legally punished. This is one of the CVs trump cards, so don't expect them to just throw it out there right away. Be patient.

These are only a few reasons why I continue to watch Geet very happily. Believe me, I have logical responses to all the things I have seen people complain about. If you want to know them, ask. Maybe I'll tell you.

My final note would be that GHSP fans really need to understand that there is a bigger picture and that bigger picture can't possibly be shown in one little, less than 30 minute episode. Instead of getting all hyper and fire breathing after one episode that didn't go how you wanted, wait awhile, watch a weeks worth of epis, and see if you don't start understanding how the story all fits together.

Okay, off my soap box. Hope you enjoyed the update, even if you didn't like this post.
