Part Five
Morning arrived with the sunlight brightening the room. Shantanu reached over to check to see if Khanak was still beside him. He reached over and was utterly surprised to find the other side absent of his wife's slender figure.
" Kahan chal gayi ab?," Shantanu muttered.
Suddenly he felt some water droplets on his face. He smiled realizing Khanak's presence was close. He pretended to be asleep.
" He's still sleeping! I'll wake him up now," she said aloud.
She had to stifle a laugh as she leaned forward and kissed his forehead. Within a few seconds he had her standing up and leaning against the wall.
"Yeh kya karo ho Shantanu?," she exclaimed.
" Tumhe vaada karna hoga," he said.
She acted ignorant. She was feeling better despite the uncertainty that lingered in the back of her mind. She wanted to be a tease.
"Kaunsa vaada Shantanu?"
He grabbed her wrist before she could try to escape.
" You won't go anywhere today alone," he stated.
She smiled.
" Accha baba theek hai. Kahin nahin jaongi," she promised.
Shantanu let her go. He started walking towards the washroom. He signaled to her that he was keeping an eye on her.
She giggled and turned around. Her eyes fell on the computer but she shook her head. No matter what came next today she was going to have a good day with her family.
Madhvi and Khusbhoo left by ten am for shopping and they would later attend a kitty party. Sunil and Akshay had plans to watch the match. She had heard no word from Shantanu if he was going to watch the match or if he was planning to simply hang around and tease her all day.
Since the three men were at home along with herself, she decided to get working on lunch. She was busy cutting vegetables when Shantanu came into the kitchen.
" Khanak yeh tum kya kari ho?" he inquired sternly.
She rolled her eyes.
" Main khaana banari hoon. Koi problem?," she hissed.
" You should be resting. You had a high fever less than two days ago," he said.
She shook her head and continued to work.
" Kaun khaana banega phir? Padosi? "
Shatanu was starting to get angry.
" We will order from outside. There is a match on, I am sure Dad and Akshay Bhaiya won't mind.," he quipped.
"Haha. Ada ko bahar ka khaana manana hai," she retorted.
" Khanak why do you always have to ruin the fun?" Shantanu exclaimed.
Suddenly a light bulb lightened in his mind.
" Khanak why don't I help you with lunch?"
She stared at him wide eyed.
" Nahin," she replied.
" Why not? I will make sure you don't tire yourself out and maybe we can have some romance!," Shantanu exclaimed.
" We both know when you are in the kitchen with me , kuch kam nahin hoga," she stated firmly.
" I can be professional Khanak!," Shantanu insisted.
" Theek hai phir aap meri madad kar sakate hain," she stated.
Both worked in silence together for some time besides for when she would instruct him to do something differently.
Then came the aata time.
Shantanu wanted to learn so he stood behind her. In due time there was aata on both of their faces and hair.
Sunil walked in and chuckled at them.
" I guess I will be telling Akshay to order food from outside. You two carry on!," he chirped as he left the kitchen.
Khanak nudged Shantanu in the chest as she tried to salvage the situation and clean up the mess.
After she had the aata done she headed upstairs to get cleaned up. They could always use it later on.
Shantanu was in the washroom. She started to bang on the door.
" Shatanu mujhe khaana garam bhi karna hai. Jaldi karo na!," she exclaimed.
" Khanak zaara towl dena!," he called out.
" Hamesha towel hi bhool te ho!( You always forget your towel)," she hissed.
She grabbed a towel and knocked on the door.
Shantanu smiled as he opened the door and pulled her inside along with the towel.
Monday arrived too soon. Khanak did not want to get the tests done. She was scared as to what could be the result. Shantanu assured her that it was best they get this done to rule out anything serious.
She would have to get a bone marrow aspiration test to determine whether she had leukemia. After some discussion the doctor agreed to let Shantanu be in the room and hold Khanak's hand as they did the test.
" After everything is cleared we will go on a long holiday Khanak. Wherever you want to go I will take you there," Shantanu promised.
She nodded. Then the needle went in. Both of them prayed it would be negative for leukemia.
