NOT AGAIN !

The marriage film is back and here we go around the saat pheras all over again. This time its the unlikely pair of Madhavan and Kangna exchanging vows,in a stretched plot that is a pastiche of many previous Bollywood films. The sweet, soulful hero falls for the bindaas edgy girl who rebuffs him since she in turn wants another bad boy,so our meek hero mopes and hangs around till the bindaas babe has a sudden change of mind, and, voila,in the end its all good.Like most shaadis,Tanu weds Manu is fun and games in the beginning, but for the most it just drags along to a predictable end.
Manu Sharma (Madhavan) is a doctor from London, looking for a homely and comely bride in India, like all docile sons from the last century who yet believe in arranged marriage.Accompanied by his parents,he dutifully checks out various girls, before settling on Tanu Trivedi (Kangna Ranaut) of Kanpur.True to Bollywood tradition,he never once speaks to Kangna, since in a hilarious scene, she is passed out drunk the first time they officially meet.He just looks at her and decides she is to be his bride. However,Kangna turns out to be a smoking and cursing firebrand who is in love with someone else,so she rudely refuses Madhavan.Being a gentleman he politely leaves, but for some reason, unexplained by the director,Madhavan cant seem to forget her.
However,Madhavan continues looking at girls, and ends up meeting Jimmy Shergill,a bad boy of Lucknow.A few weeks later, the duo meet again.Madhavans dear sikh friend Eijaz Khan,is getting married to Kangnas best buddy,Swara Bhaskar,in Kapurthala,so a full round of Punjabi shaadi celebrations begin.Meanwhile,Mad-Kang are constantly blowing hot and cold, leaving the audience very confused.Midway through the celebrations,a miffed Madhavan decides to leave, but Kangna begs him to stay back, since she too is secretly getting married to someone the next day! So puppy Madhavan stays back to help, and many more cloying scenes take place. Finally two baraaats land up at the Kangnas home, leading to a predictable, long climax.
Tanu weds Manu suffers from a meandering screenplay which tends to get convenient and repetitive, while the film is packed with music and dance sequences. The film is well shot but the direction is patchy, like the scene where the cast is sitting in an open railway carriage, but no ones hair is flying.Kangna is sultry and s**tty in parts, playing her coquettish character to the hilt, though,at times her peculiar accent and hilarious pronunciation end up adding unintended humour to her role.Madhavan looks podgy and lost in the film as he is led around by his little finger. The talented Deepak Dobriyal, with his awkward, angular face,is effortless and sparkling as the goofy buddy, while Eijaz Khan and Swara Bhaskar make a far more interesting couple, and this trio does a great job in keeping the film from sagging.Jimmy Shergill has a limited track, which doesnt quite add up.However the film is fun in parts, and if you can handle another shaadi film, this one is alright for a dekho.
