New FF - Eden (p. 56) - paused indefinitely

Chapter 1

"Is Susannah here, Lucy?"

Lucy turned around to find twelve-year Landon standing by the door to the kitchen.

"She is around the back in the garden. Where she always is. Likely muddied her clothes terribly. Mother is going to have a fit, you know." Lucy said in exasperation before she looked back. "Well, don't just stand there like a stranger, Landon. Do come in. I made some fig scones."

"Charlotte is going to have a fit if she finds you in here, Lucy. You've been sneaking away from her, haven't you?" Landon walked in and leaned against the counter, reaching for a fig scone from amongst the twenty or so that were neatly arranged on a long tray that looked as if it had just come out of the oven.

"Charlotte has gone with Mother to visit with the Vicar and will likely be gone for a few hours at the very least. Just enough time for me to muck around in the kitchen. How it is? Do tell me." She looked eagerly towards Landon only to find that he had already finished the first one and was reaching for the next one. "Oh Landon! You are my favorite subject for experiments." She ruffled his hair and he shook his head out of her grasp, already at an age where he had to deny the pleasure that it gave him, lest he be thought a mama's boy.

They heard movement by the door then and turned to look. When he saw who it was, his heart skipped a beat, as it had been doing every time he had seen her during the past few months.

"Margaret!" Lucy exclaimed in pleasure at her best friend of eleven years; which was only five longer than they had both been alive.

He found it difficult not to stare at Margaret. Everything about her was fascinating to him… her hair, her eyes, her lips, her skin, her voice, her walk… everything really…

Margaret walked in with a smile and hugged Lucy before she turned to muss Landon's hair, just as Lucy had done. But, now that it was the object of his fledgling and raw affections, he stood there still as a stone, afraid to move a muscle. Her hands were gone as quickly as they had been there and he tried not to sigh in disappointment. She didn't see him any differently than how she had always seen him, as Thornton's little brother.

"What are you making?" Margaret leaned over Lucy's shoulder.

"Fig scones. Would you have some?"

"Of course." Margaret took one from the tray as she looked around and asked, "Where's Freddy?" Freddy was Lucy and Susannah's fourteen year old brother, possessing of a natural charm that could only be a God-given gift. He teased both his sisters mercilessly, but a more protective brother Landon had never seen.... well, save one, and that was his own brother John.

"Freddy's off somewhere playing with Dante and Damien."

"Ah, I see…" Margaret nodded before biting into the scone again.

As much as he would have liked to linger next to Margaret, he wanted to see what Susannah was up to and thus he called out a quick good-bye to Lucy and Margaret before he sailed out the doorway to the make his way down to the garden.
