WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Apparently nothing, when it comes to Bollywood. So, our heroes repeat the same name in as many films as they can. The christening of our heroes must be going like this: Imagining a dialogue between the producer and the director, 'Yaar, uska naam Chunnu rakhte hain,' says the director. 'Nahi yaar, woh kaunsi phillum thi uski jo khoob chali thi? Usme uska naam kya tha? Wahi rakho, saala, lucky lagta hai. Paisa toh milega!' says the producer. And that's how Amitabh becomes Vijay, ek baar nahi, baar baar, and Shah Rukh Ra-Ra-Rahul (he's graduated to "Ra.One" now, though), and Salman remains Prem.
Amitabh Bachchan has played Vijay in over 19 movies, SRK became Raj in "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and remained Raj in "Mohabbatein" and "Chalte Chalte", even though his other screen name Rahul became as popular after "Dil Toh Pagal Hai". He had the name in over seven movies. Sallu must have thought if it works for SRK, it'll work for him, and so, he also became Raj in four movies, but Prem stuck to him after "Maine Pyar Kiya". He had the name in over a dozen movies after that!
POOJA BANI POO
Our heroines love the name Pooja, or so it seems. Because even before 1982, when Shabana Azmi was given the name in "Arth", many celluloid Poojas had come and gone. Tees saal baad, actresses continue to be Pooja, but with a modern twist. Remember sexy Kareena in "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham..."? Pooja Sharma had to be shortened to Poo, though she remained Pooja for many films baad mein. A look at who all have adopted the name on-screen:
• Kareena Kapoor in "Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai", "K3G", "Jeena Sirf Merre Liye" and "Tashan"
• Katrina Kaif in "Sarkar"
• Madhuri Dixit in "Saajan", "Dil Toh Pagal Hai" and "Aarzoo"
• Karisma Kapur in "Khuddar", "Aatish: Feel The Fire", "Suhaag", "Saajan Chale Sasural", "Sapoot", "Biwi No. 1", "Aashiq" and "Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya"
• Pooja Bhatt in "Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin"
• Priyanka Chopra in "Waqt: The Race Against Time"
• Rani Mukerji in "Mehndi", "Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega", "Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai" and "Mujhse Dosti Karoge"
Dekha, when it comes to our heroines, the name's Pooja. Poo-ja!
