Hope's Take 5
You know guys I must say PR is worth watching again. I know it is not as romantic as most of the ArMan fans want it to be but it is what I signed up for - a middle class family story with believable family tensions. Ok so what did I think today.............?
1. Manav ' A standing ovation👏. Seriously, today Manav excelled for me. Being a ghar jamai is not a nice thing in India and if seen in a middle-class family is a poor reflection on a man's capacity as a provider. Manav knows this very well. What's more, he has been a damn hard worker and single-handedly managed the running of a household involving 5 adults including college tuitions and teenage allowances. For a person with basic education and a blue collar job that is commendable. More than I can say for a college grad like Vinod who has always needed his salary coupled with either his father's pension or his sister's income or his wife's salary to make ends meet. Yet, this Manav who has always felt it unthinkable and demeaning to seek help put all self-depreciating feelings aside and in a practical tone and thought accepted reality and his only option ' the breathing space that only Sulo could provide. He cannot turn to his own family home as his mother's taunts are what got Archu in this condition to begin with, he cannot turn to Ajit because what Savita left unfinished with Archu, Rasika would complete with pleasure ' even Manjusha would visit the basti for this reason. So Manav Kudos to you, Sir, big time. He knows what is to come and in spite of the welcome he gets he keeps a low profile so that HE is not making the situation worse. Considerate as always😃.
2. Sulo - A mother's pain, fear, gratitude and acceptance ' a range of emotions conveyed so beautifully in 30 minutes👏. She went to offer help not for Archu's sake but for her own. It was her need to nurture not Archu's. Her fear for Archu's health and safety and her fear of Archu's rejection YET AGAIN braved so well and covered so artfully when she made her offer so defiantly. Sulo is at her weakest around Archu but it's all tough love for her. All tough love. The look of relief and then gratitude when Manav accepted was heart-rendering to see, though subtly enacted. I was proud of Sulo too today, she put Archu's health above any taunts or visible disapproval she might receive from Manjusha (who she has always tried to please) and acted as she thought necessary rather than sought family approval and support. She handled the situation when she returned firmly and admirably.
3. The K Siblings ' Mr. Elastic is back like an unwanted boomerang. If he keeps snapping back and forth like this he is going to give me whiplash. Vinod, the house belongs to your parents and your parents can offer shelter and support to whichever children they want to, whenever they want to. Now snap back to your wife and your sisters and explain this simple fact to them.
Varsha declared that Manav has lost her respect YET AGAIN. Honey, I got news for you ' gaining your respect is not a top priority for ANYONE these days. Now can you please proceed to your time-out chair and wait your ration of humble pie.
Vaishali is now ON THE SIDE of the vahini who walked away with the sole family earner and every valuable belonging in the house including the black and white TV (which by the way was never bought back). So I don't understand this ' she can forgive a SIL who took her brother and his financial support away from her aged retired parents but she cannot forgive a BIL for whom her sister CHOSE to walk away. Hmm, that logic escapes me.
4. The K Damaads ' A standing ovation for the boys👏. While the girls were huffing and puffing through their ruffled feathers, the damaads were cool as cucumbers and CHOSE to not meddle (as reasonable and sensible human beings) and leave their MIL and FIL to handle the situation with their own children. Very wise decision. But then again they are not K's by blood so they do possess a brain and independent thought.
5. Archu ' Her reaction was mixed for me today. Things I liked ' she was genuinely concerned about the expected treatment of Manav even to the point of being uncaring of her health, was genuinely confident in their ability to tough it out and come out on top and genuinely affronted when she witnessed Manav being snubbed by her brother. Her refusal to go though was not just all of these things but ego too. She had rejected her mother after the wedding and to accept help from that same mother for a reason and predicament that she knows was valid is really irking her. Archana was the obedient child her entire life. She rebelled this time against all odds and the one thing that she rebelled against her mother for ' Sulo's fears and caution was justified. Blatant failure and obvious reminders of it are thorns in the side of rebellious children. Her health, her situation, Manav's predicament is not Sulo's fault. She knows this but does not want to accept defeat in front of her mother. It is this same bruised ego that did not leave her in a position to boldly react to Vinod's and Manjusha's snubs. She knows Manav is being snubbed and silently humiliated because of her past love-crazy behaviour but she had no leg to stand on today. Actually, I don't want Archu to fight for Manav with her siblings - I want her to remember the snubs, the change of heart, everything when she decides to spoon feed varsha next time or side with her vahini over her dada.
Those were my thoughts. What were yours?
