Ultimately it comes to control and soulful singing, if you can do that with or without classical training. Some people may not pursue classical singing and they are motivated to learn singing by practicing old songs by rafi and lata. People have different ways how they practice with their voice.last but not the least you need to have some luck to succeed in bollywood.

People undertake classical training for many reasons. Voice control is only one side of classical training, which has the other, more special side of improvisation. If a singer wants voice control and only voice control, without regard for the performance and elaborationof raags, then he can do many other things than classical training.
And Asha Bhosle is highly classically trained - her riyaaz consists of practising raags actually. Watch this video from 2:15

Sunidhi Chauhan, KK and Kishore Kumar didn't just get up and start singing - it's wrong to assume that they just had a gift from above. They did train. They did work hard. But they did not receive formal or classical training. It's a false dilemma to think that singers are either 'gifted' or are 'classically trained' and nothing else.

That's untrue. And I'm sure you know of 'successful singer[s]' who are not classically trained, so I don't even need to reel off a list of names.

These are very gifted and talented persons who have great music sense. They can easily pick things up and learn pretty quick too. Some could have learnt it in their previous lives too.
Basically the fundamentals have to be there and for some it comes naturally. These days I notice most of the kids have attended some sort of singing lessons or perhaps learnt from family and friends.
But there are a few gifted ones who learnt by listening to radios or watching a Movie.

In modern times it would be very useful to also learn to read music scores and also play some instruments. This way it makes things much easier for the MDs.
Many can tell the tune by just looking at the song sheets. Fortunately I think there are softwares that can help.
