Action Replayy Movie Review
Action Replayy - A clean fun musical entertainer ...rating:4/5
Joginder Tuteja [Friday, November 05, 2010]

'Action Replayy' is one film which is arriving as an underdog this Diwali. The film doesn't scream and excites audience by proclaiming - 'Hey, look I am cool' or 'See, Akshay Kumar would be seen as a Mr. Smart Know All' once again' or 'The gags are such that you would fall off your seats'. Instead it does it all in a subtle manner when it comes to treatment though the look of the film does gain audience attention, courtesy the 70s setting that had a psychedelic flavour to it.

No wonder, when the curtains go up, the film begins and a few minutes later, Akshay is introduced as a nerd from the 70s, everyone collectively goes 'eeks' along with his son (Aditya Roy Kapoor) who has made a visit to the past. Forget the flamboyance or the energy that one expects from Akshay Kumar, he actually gets into a garb as never worn before. Donning an ill fitting 'kurta-pyajama', a pair of TV screen style glasses, a 'champu' haircut, an awkward walk and last but the most visible aspect of his personality - two protruding teeth, Akshay is as unlike a hero as one can expect from him or any other supporting actor filling a frame.

Vipul Shah gets the retro flavour bang on right from the time opening credits start rolling. The anthem music, background score, colours, costumes, sets, props - everything blends in truly well to actually traverse audience to the era gone by.

This is not all as the characters too turn into the kind that one expects from the 70s. Aishwarya Rai as a talkative mini skirted young tomboyish girl could well have taken a cue from Neetu Singh, Rannvijay Singh as a harmless villain is a diluted version of Ranjeet & Prem Chopra while Rajpal Yadav is a mini version of the boisterous Rajendra Nath. However, Akshay does something that has never been done by an actor either from the 70s or the current times and this is where the win of the character lies.

So while Aditya tries to develop love between next door neighbours Akshay and Aishwarya, everything that is possibly goes wrong between the duo. A street-smart Ash makes life miserable for Akshay and though he has a soft corner for her, he manages to let go off his feelings when he sees her get out of a mini skirt and don a saree. His heart goes 'dhak dhak' and he is all set to propose to her, but not before he goes through some real transformation. It is time for some 'awaaz neeche' and the game of one-upmanship as he is the one to take the upper seat now with Ash eventually falling in love with her.

A storyline as simple as that has to be sustained by peppering the screen with some interesting ingredients. This is something that is made possible through some fantastic tunes that have been put in place by Pritam. 'Zor Ka Jhatka', 'Chann Ke Mohalla' and 'Ae Bekhabar' arrive one after another and are a treat for the audience. There is a medley of four songs (set in a dance competition) in the second half of the film which is immediately followed by a love song (Tera Mera Pyaar); something that will have mixed reactions from audience as there are too many songs that come in one go.

This is immediately followed by a chase sequence, hence leading to a climax which seems to be set in a Priyadarshan/Anees Bazmee mode. For those who had liked the subtle yet engaging narrative of the film so far, this part of the film has a different flavour to it, something that may entice different reactions from different segments (mass v/s class) of the audience.

Coming back to the film in totality, to its credit there is no dull moment. While some of the fun sequences (Akshay proposing to Ash for the first time in a garden, the series of 'awaaz neeche' episodes, the one where Ash brings a cake for Akshay) do bring on the laughs, there are a few lump in the throat moments as well (Akshay touching Aditya's feet, his sob story on the reason behind his personality). What makes 'Action Replayy' further endearing is the chemistry between Akshay and Ash, something which is unconventional and yet makes one wonder that why the two had never been paired together.

Amongst other actors, Aditya turns out to be a surprise package as he does justice to his lengthy role in the film. He has a pleasant screen presence, is confident and quite natural. Om Puri and Kirron Kher are as usual, Rajpal Yadav is controlled, Rannvijay Singh decent while Randhir Kapoor and Sudeepa Singh are hardly there. Neha Dhupia has a miniscule screen time in a friendly appearance though she makes her presence felt in 'Zor Ka Jhatka'.

Overall, 'Action Replayy' turns out to be a clean musical entertainer that has a young feel to it without turning loud and brings with it an appeal that would cater to audience across all age groups. If in look out for some clean entertainment this Diwali, step into 'Action Replayy'; you would enjoy some harmless fun that would follow in those two hours.

Action Replayy: Promising theme but low in substance
By VINOD MIRANI
(4 November 2010 5:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Action Replayy has a reasonably promising theme, which could have become a joy ride from 2010 to 1975 and back. But, alas, it lacks in substance to build on this theme and lame efforts at comedy make it pure dullsville till the last few reels when the film gains some momentum.

Aditya Roy Kapoor does not mind being in love, parenting a child or a live in relationship, but abhors the very idea of marriage. Randhir Kapoor, his girlfriend, Sudeepa Singh's granddad, sets him a deadline till midnight next day to decide because after that he plans to proceed on time travel in the time machine he has invented.

Aditya's reasons for avoiding marriage have a solid base; he has never seen his parents, Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai, happy or in love or not fighting with each other. His idea of a surprise party for his parents backfires when both fight in front of the guests. Aditya learns that the very beginning of their relationship/ marriage was wrong. He decides to set the foundation right. He
hijacks Randhir Kapoor's time machine and lands up back in time in 1975 when his parents were yet to be married!

There, he finds his father-to-be is a shabbily dressed, idiotic looking man dominated by everybody, while his mother-to-be is a tom-boy with a couple of make-believe bullies who also treat his father shabbily. Aditya Roy Kapoor sets out to set things right, play cupid to his parents, make both of them fall in love with each other.

The plot is lost as Akshay plays the buffoon to childish gags. The rest of the cast is too feeble to lead. It is only in the last few reels when Akshay Kumar comes into his element that the film generates some pace.

Vipul Shah has tried to go into details to create 1975 ambience which is quite off the mark; dressing, hairstyle, peace pendants are more like 1960s rather than mid 70s; also twist dance went out of vogue long before that; Bori Bandar of the 70s with miles between two vehicles? That would be a car driver's dream!

Sets, miniatures and surroundings don't convince. Playing Aandhi number in the backdrop to establish 1975 makes you wish Action Replayy had
such songs too, at least one or two! Dialogue could have held this film together to an extent but it is only towards the end that you hear some witty repartees.

Akshay Kumar is totally out of sync with the character of a loser despite being made to look like one. Aishwarya Rai tries to imitate mid-70s heroines (Zeenat Aman/Mumtaz?) instead of acting like one and manages to be a caricature at best; pouting and making eyes is not 70s acting. Aditya Roy Kapoor and Neha Dhupia are good. Ranvijay Singh is okay.

Action Replayy falls far short of providing entertainment for most of its part and disappoints.

To recreate the bygone era and tell a parable of the former period is nothing short of a challenge and that's exactly what director Vipul Shah is out to achieve with his latest outing ACTION REPLAYY. Travel machines and time travel stories are no longer alien for Bollywood. We have had our share of movies wherein characters have either travelled into the future or into the past. In ACTION REPLAYY, one of the protagonists travels into the past because he feels he needs to make an effort to better the past and only then can his family live in bliss and harmony.

Write your own movie review of Action Replayy
I'd like to clarify at the very outset that ACTION REPLAYY does not share any similarity with David Fincher's THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON [2008], as alleged and discussed. However, in the same breath, let me clarify that the film does bring back memories of the outstandingly executed BACK TO THE FUTURE, a 1985 American science-fiction film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The only difference is that the character played by Michael J. Fox accidentally goes into the past, but in ACTION REPLAYY, the boy seems to be on a mission, like he intentionally wants to get into the past.

A light-hearted rom-com with a dash of sci-fi thrown in, ACTION REPLAYY should be viewed without really seeking much rationale or logic behind every action and reaction. If viewed in the same perspective, then chances are that you might just like this fare. Of course, ACTION REPLAYY is no perfect film, for it has its share of blemishes, which actually curtails its groW*H to an extent.

Bunty [Aditya Roy Kapur] loves his girlfriend Tanya, but runs a mile whenever she mentions marriage. His phobia with matrimony stems from his parents Kishen [Akshay Kumar] and Mala's [Aishwarya Rai Bachchan] acrimonious marriage. But now Bunty is in a fix. Tanya's grandfather, Professor Anthony Gonsalves [Randhir Kapoor], has given him an ultimatum -- get married to Tanya or stop seeing her. Bunty knows that unless he does something fast, his dreams of living happily ever after with Tanya will bite the dust.

As Bunty's surprise party for his parent's 35th wedding anniversary deteriorates into yet another explosive fight between Kishen and Mala, he decides to turn back the clock and rewrite Kishen and Mala's destiny and alter their disastrous marriage into a romantic affair of the hearts.

And how does he do that? By using the professor's time machine to travel back in time. To a time when Kishen and Mala were not married... To a time when Kishen's father Rai Bahadur [Om Puri] and Mala's mother Bholi Devi [Kirron Kher] were sworn enemies... To a time when Kishen was a certified nerd, bullied merciless by Kundan [Rannvijay]... To a time when Mala couldn't stand the sight of Kishen and took great pleasure in ragging him silly.

Bunty has to transform his father from a wimp into an eligible bachelor and his mother from a tomboy into the epitome of feminine grace. Then he has to attempt an impossible task -- make them fall in love with each other. And finally he has to make his grandparents agree to their love marriage.

Doesn't the synopsis sound really good on paper? But the question is, has the director executed the wonderful story idea with panache and have the writers come up with a taut screenplay? Let's attempt to analyze…

ACTION REPLAYY is the fifth film Vipul Shah and Akshay Kumar have done together after AANKHEN, WAQT, NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG [which was produced by him and directed by Anees Bazmee] and it's evident that the two share great work chemistry. Also, I genuinely feel that Vipul's script sense is good, he likes to attempt diverse genres, exploring new territories each time he attempts a film.

When attempting a movie on a concept like time travel, it's imperative that the writing should be so persuasive that the viewer is influenced into believing that people can travel into the past or future. In this case, a little bit of additional gyan would have only enhanced the impact of the story, but whatever minimal is said about time travel in the film doesn't register effectively, besides the fact that the time machine itself looks tacky and tawdry and does very little in convincing you that this piece of scrap can really transport you into a departed era, 1975 in this case.

Also, once the protagonist reaches the former period to set things right for the family, it just left me wondering how it would improve his present scenario. Frankly, the screenplay writing is flawed and a few tracks just don't cut ice. The track involving Rannvijay is lackluster and least convincing, also the track involving the warring neighbours [Om Puri and Kirron Kher] is half-baked, the portions involving Randhir Kapoor and also Neha Dhupia are undeveloped and the climax [the long chase] is far from comic. The blame falls completely on screenplay writers Suresh Nair, Ritesh Shah and Aatish Kapadia for coming up with an unimaginative screenplay, despite having a brilliant concept on hand.

What really salvages the otherwise flawed script is the pace and the length of the film and of course, the performances of its principal cast. The film moves at a brisk pace, giving you little time to think, although I wish to add that if a couple of scenes from the first hour are deleted, the second hour would get a bit more impactful. Yet, all said and done, Vipul Shah seems to have kept a strict vigil on the length of the film, not allowing it to over-exceed and making it less burdensome and more enjoyable for the viewer. However, the film is not a patch on his earlier works, especially WAQT and NAMASTEY LONDON. He's made far superior films in the past.

Pritam comes up with a likable score, with 'Zor Ka Jhatka' leaving a zor ka jhatka from the very onset itself. 'O Bekhabar' is soothing and reminds you of a Yash Chopra composition, while 'Nakhre' is catchy and hummable. Sejal Shah's cinematography is alright.

I'd like to make a specific note of Salim-Sulaiman's background score, which is amongst the best of 2010. The duo's contribution to the film is immense, since even an ordinary sequence gets enhanced with the right sound. The costumes and styling deserve brownie points, while the sets of the bygone era are realistic, except for the time machine, which, like I pointed out earlier, looks outright tacky.

Both Akshay and Aishwarya remain faithful to their characters and come up with winning performances. It requires a lot of courage for a good looking man like Akshay to look the opposite of what he is, with buck teeth and neck-length hair, and he carries it off convincingly. He's wonderful in both young and old parts. Ditto for Aishwarya, who enacts the over the top Mala with understanding of the character. Even the elderly Mala has been effectively portrayed by her.

The real surprise is Aditya Roy Kapur, who looks extremely persuasive as the demoralized and dispirited son of Akshay-Ash. He's fantastic. This act should open new vistas for the youngster. Distinguished actors like Om Puri, Kirron Kher and Rajpal Yadav come across as mere props with sketchy characterizations. They are under-utilized, but despite this they give all their might and power to the roles. Rannvijay is least convincing, while Randhir Kapoor and Neha Dhupia are wasted.

On the whole, ACTION RELAYY is a light-hearted rom-com that should be viewed without really seeking much rationale or logic behind every action and reaction. If you go with that in mind, chances are you might like the experience. A slightly dreary first hour, but a racy second hour with top notch performances makes it a decent watch this Diwali.
