An adaptation
The film is being written by Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar himself and is a contemporary adaptation of the 1960 book titled 'Z', by Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos. Co-produced by PVR Pictures, Shanghai will go on floors by March 2010.
After making the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' (LSD), director Dibakar Banerjee has announced his next film, 'Shanghai'.
After directing films like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla','Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!', Dibakar is all set to make his first political thriller, 'Shanghai' which he calls his "most violent film."
The film is being written by Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar himself, which is a contemporary adaptation of the 1960's Greek book titled 'Z', by Vassilis Vassilikos.

'Shanghai'- a dark, gritty, political thriller
Dibakar Banerjee's films are realistic and talk about real people. Throwing light on the theme of the film, the filmmaker said that the film is about politics and not about politicians.
He further adds, "The story dwells on how people are at the receiving end of politics of violence, emotion and the feeling of it. It is about a violent incident and the search that follows."
When quizzed about the unusual name of a political thriller based in India, he informed, "I know the film has a very different name, it is an interesting title because the film doesn't have a single scene of 'Shanghai'. But when you'll see the film, you'll come to know about the connection."
For 'Shanghai', Dibakar ties up with PVR
The association with PVR has led to rumors of a rift between Dibakar and LSD's producer Ekta Kapoor. The director quashes speculation on the subject.
Dibakar says, "We've been planning this for eight months now. Chairman Ajay Bijli is really excited about the concept. I like the fact that PVR is more interested in my film than in me."
Ajay Bijli, who is the chairman and MD of PVR Group, is in all praises for the filmmaker. He says, "Dibakar is one of the finest among the new breed of Indian filmmakers and will offer him every support to help him realize his vision."
Dibakar Banerjee (Love, Sex Aur Dhokha fame) has no qualms about Imran Khan opting out of his next venture 'Shanghai' which has now been re-written as for Abhay Deol who has now been finalized for the lead role in the film.
Dibakar said, "Imran said no to Shanghai. That's when me and writer Urmi Juvekar decided to change the character. With Imran out the script suddenly became more gritty. The protagonist's character was nave and innocent when Imran was to play him. Now he's not that innocent."
Talking about Abhay, Dibakar says, "When an actor evolves the project too changes.
When I did Oye Lucky Lucky Oye with Abhay that was a different actor. Today after Dev D (for Abhay) and Love Sex Aur Dhokha (for Dibakar) we're both in a different zone creatively. "
The film also has a strong role for the female protagonist and Dibakar wanted Katrina for the role, but unfortunately Katrina too won't be a part of the part. Also, though titled 'Shanghai', ironically the film won't be shot there.
Dibakar explains, "Let me add we're making it on a tight budget of Rs 12 crores with no frills. Shanghai is not an extravaganza. And it certainly won't be shot in China. The title describes a mindset. Beyond that I wouldn't like to reveal the plot. "
The film will be produced by PVR.
