Odd couple Sonam-Abhay redux

By: Tushar Joshi Date: 2010-09-16 Place: Mumbai

The Sonam Kapoor-Abhay Deol jodi finds another taker. Dibakar Banerjee has cast the two in his next, Shanghai

Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol might well make their second coming in Dibakar Banerjee's next titled Shanghai.

While casting for the film is still on, well-placed sources inform us that that the Love Sex Dhokha (LSD) director has locked in the Aisha jodi as his lead pair. The two will be seen romancing each other in the political thriller despite having creative differences in their first film together.

Abhay was the director's first choice. The two had worked together on Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye! and share a great camaraderie. Reveals a source, "Apart from having a great work equation, the two are also good friends off the set."

Shanghai is a thriller that follows a particular incident that happens in Abhay's character's life and its repercussions on everyone around him."

The lukewarm response to Aisha didn't stop Dibakar from considering Abhay and Sonam as his lead pair. The source says, "Even though that film didn't work, it hasn't stopped film makers from approaching the two as leads for future projects", adding, "Dibakar has spent the last nine months working on the concept and ideation for the film. Unlike his previous films, this one will have violence as the core theme."

However, when contacted, Dibakar denied he has cast Abhay and Sonam as the leads.

Anil's in it, too?
Sources reveal that Anil Kapoor has been approached to play a negative role in Dibakar's film. Even though details are sketchy, it is learnt that Anil is quite excited with the subject offered. If he agrees to do the film, it would be the first time the father-daughter duo will appear in the same project. In the past, Anil and Sonam have been offered numerous offers, but have consciously avoided being cast together. Most of the roles were father-daughter characters, but since Shanghai offers Anil the chance to play a dark character, he showed immediate interest.

An adaptation
The film is being written by Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar himself and is a contemporary adaptation of the 1960 book titled 'Z', by Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos. Co-produced by PVR Pictures, Shanghai will go on floors by March 2010.

Not sure if it's just a rumour or the truth, but I would love watching them together once again :)

Even I'm not completely sure if it's an authentic article, but I do know that Dibakar is making a movie called 'Shanghai' with Abhay and Emraan Hashmi...I also know that he is looking for a female lead in the movie....but not sure if it's Sonam or not. It's slated for a March 2011 release. So I guess it's a typo. Another one...and there are several around the net....

After LSD, Dibakar Banerjee's next 'Shanghai'
by Agrajit Roy - September 14, 2010 - 0 comments ShareThis

After making the critically acclaimed and commercially successful 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' (LSD), director Dibakar Banerjee has announced his next film, 'Shanghai'.

After directing films like 'Khosla Ka Ghosla','Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!', Dibakar is all set to make his first political thriller, 'Shanghai' which he calls his "most violent film."

The film is being written by Urmi Juvekar and Dibakar himself, which is a contemporary adaptation of the 1960's Greek book titled 'Z', by Vassilis Vassilikos.

Co-produced by PVR pictures, 'Shanghai' will go on the floor by March 2011. The cast of the film has not been decided till now, although news of Abhay Deol being offered the lead role is doing the rounds.

'Shanghai'- a dark, gritty, political thriller
Dibakar Banerjee's films are realistic and talk about real people. Throwing light on the theme of the film, the filmmaker said that the film is about politics and not about politicians.

He further adds, "The story dwells on how people are at the receiving end of politics of violence, emotion and the feeling of it. It is about a violent incident and the search that follows."

When quizzed about the unusual name of a political thriller based in India, he informed, "I know the film has a very different name, it is an interesting title because the film doesn't have a single scene of 'Shanghai'. But when you'll see the film, you'll come to know about the connection."

For 'Shanghai', Dibakar ties up with PVR
The association with PVR has led to rumors of a rift between Dibakar and LSD's producer Ekta Kapoor. The director quashes speculation on the subject.

Dibakar says, "We've been planning this for eight months now. Chairman Ajay Bijli is really excited about the concept. I like the fact that PVR is more interested in my film than in me."

Ajay Bijli, who is the chairman and MD of PVR Group, is in all praises for the filmmaker. He says, "Dibakar is one of the finest among the new breed of Indian filmmakers and will offer him every support to help him realize his vision."

I think Abhay is in the movie for sure, and also remember reading about Emraan being confirmed for the movie in a newspaper. Another interesting piece of info.....So I guess earlier he'd planned for Imran-Katrina to star in the movie....

Dibakar Banerjee modifies 'Shanghai' for Abhay Deol

Dibakar Banerjee (Love, Sex Aur Dhokha fame) has no qualms about Imran Khan opting out of his next venture 'Shanghai' which has now been re-written as for Abhay Deol who has now been finalized for the lead role in the film.

Dibakar said, "Imran said no to Shanghai. That's when me and writer Urmi Juvekar decided to change the character. With Imran out the script suddenly became more gritty. The protagonist's character was nave and innocent when Imran was to play him. Now he's not that innocent."

Talking about Abhay, Dibakar says, "When an actor evolves the project too changes.
When I did Oye Lucky Lucky Oye with Abhay that was a different actor. Today after Dev D (for Abhay) and Love Sex Aur Dhokha (for Dibakar) we're both in a different zone creatively. "

The film also has a strong role for the female protagonist and Dibakar wanted Katrina for the role, but unfortunately Katrina too won't be a part of the part. Also, though titled 'Shanghai', ironically the film won't be shot there.

Dibakar explains, "Let me add we're making it on a tight budget of Rs 12 crores with no frills. Shanghai is not an extravaganza. And it certainly won't be shot in China. The title describes a mindset. Beyond that I wouldn't like to reveal the plot. "

The film will be produced by PVR.

Imran and katrina??😆 they've opted out, what a blessing. Seriously i cannot imagine imran khan doing any dark movie or any dark character (hint: kidnap😆) i think he only should do comedy or sweet boy image kinda roles. But i am waiting if sonam is doing the movie or not but yay for abhay!! he rocks in such kind of roles.
