u know its nauseating to even read abt this crap..forget watching this!!
sanaya,i understand u dnt live in India and get ur info frm movies and shows and ur parents of course,bt let me tell u what is shown as fiction is a 1000 fold exaggerated nonsense frm reality..even my grandmother living in bhubaneshwar dsnt follow these "rituals"..people living in India have 80% moved beyond such torture of widows..and the shows sit and glorify and gain sympathy money frm audiences by making it seem the 20% people represent the whole mindset of the country..and eating once a day and sleeping on the floor!!!are u kidding me???even my great grandmother dint do such things!!!and she was really really old when she finally passed away..so which century are the cvs living in..and as far as the gurumai character..even tho i dnt believe in gurus per se,even then i dnt think any celebrated spiritual guru today advocates such bygone era rules..be it shri shri ravi shankar or osho rajneesh or any of the other God knows how many gurus and gurumas..everybody talks of spirituality as a way of getting peace, not torturing vulnerable people by the pretext of rituals..and all advocate moving beyond meaningless rituals..

Back to darkages guys........Raja Ram Mohan Roy ko bulao.........arey woh to aab apana matha pit raha hoga.......Willim Bentik bhi.........he must be thinking that he was a foolish guy to have legalised widow remarriage back in mid 1800s........now CVs need to read history a little bit.........If they need help on the condition of widows and how they live in real life, they can contact me....I have a good research report ready...."socio-economic condition of Widows of Puri"....I think they do not know about widowhood and how it is observed in practice.....

it is sad that people who don't live in India have such strong opinions on the country.
My nan (mum's mum) was widowed when she was 46 (way back in 1981) and she was from a village where there was no telephone and electricity was like for 3 hours a day and we are supposed to be a staunch orthodox Brahmin family.
And my gran (dad's mum) was widowed when she was 25 (even further back in 1953) and she too was from a village and staunch orthodox Brahmin family.
And they were never subjected to this form of degradation from either family/friends/relatives/society.
They never even wore white saris or anything...they just carried on with life. So if my grandmother could bring up 4 children aged 7,5,4 and 3 months, with very little money, educate them and make them independent in a 'country like india' then I think I am happy living in a 'country like India'.
Which country doesn't have bad stuff? Lived in London for 10 years and have seen that side of the coin too...a colleague of mine would find it a pain to take his nearly blind 70+ mum to the supermarket once every fortnight and would devise so many excuses to try and get out of it and would boast about it at work...so can i judge England by this...a country of ungrateful selfish people who cannot think beyond their own nose! I don't think so...
sorry for going on, but when people bring India as a country into a discussion and put it down it winds me up...every place on this earth has good and bad, beauty and ugliness...
we should respect the good stuff and try our best to fix the bad stuff (rather than passing comments sitting at a comfortable distance)
Be the change you want to see in the WORLD (not just India)...
