However, things change for Mayank when Gunjan's cousin, Nupur Bhushan (Rati Pandey) comes to study in their college. Nupur, is a sweet, simple and bubbly girl, who loves to watch Bollywood movies, and is absolutely crazy over Shahrukh Khan. Nupur just needs someone to compete with, someone to challenge her, and she will be able to do almost anything. This very attitude of hers irks Mayank at first, and he hates Nupur, but as time goes on, Nupur begins to grow on him'
Mayank Sharma (Arjun Bijlani): 20 years old. A young and handsome guy, whom the girls in his college are crazy after. But he doesn't pay any attention to any of these girls. He thinks of them as silly. He loves to study, that's his favourite pastime. He has his head buried in books most of the time. If at all you call him a nerd, you cannot help but add 'hot' before the nerd, because he is extremely good looking ' and that's why so many girls like him. Other than books, the rest of his world revolves around his mom Shilpa, and his "gang" of friends (Gunjan, Samrat, Uday, Diya, and Benji), whom he knows from childhood. Gunjan and Diya are the only girls he talks to, and feels no real "threat" from. One reason is because from childhood itself, Gunjan and Samrat have liked each other, as have Uday and Diya.
Shilpa Sharma (Vaishnavi McDonald): 45 years old. Shilpa got married to Mayank's father when she was only 17. For 7 years of marriage, she and her husband tried to have a kid, but were unsuccessful due to numerous miscarriages. When Shilpa, aged 25, finally gave birth to Mayank, she was extremely delighted. But her happiness was not to last too long, since her husband died within Mayank's 2nd birthday. That is why Shilpa dotes on Mayank. He is her only son, and reminds her of her husband ' they both loved reading. She calls him Mayu, out of her motherly love. She knows it annoys him, but she also knows that inwardly, he too loves her calling him that. Shilpa has never let Mayank feel the need for a father, as she has been both a mother and father to him; but has never scolded him either, just made him lovingly understand if ever he did anything wrong. She is able to understand what her son is unable to say out loud to her or anyone else, and helps get him what his heart truly desires without his ever having to say anything ' that is how good a mother she is, that is how well she is able to understand him.
Gunjan Bhushan (Sanaya Irani): 19 years old. She is one of Mayank's friends. Infact, she is Mayank's first ever friend. They met when they were about 4 or 5 years old, when Gunjan shifted into the house (bungalow) next to his. She is able to understand and tease him, without his getting seriously angry or annoyed. Gunjan is 1 of the 2 girls (the other one being Diya) who Mayank doesn't run away from. Gunjan has liked Samrat, another one of their gang from the time when they were about 12, and he "rescued her" from some idiot guys in another class who were teasing her.
Samrat Shergill (Mohit Sehgal): 20 years old. He is a total cool, hot dude. He is the 2nd most handsome guy in the college, after Mayank of course. He is sometimes in amazement at how Mayank can get so many girls to go crazy after him when he doesn't even pay them any attention, while on the other hand he himself doesn't have such a huge fan following even though he is quite a flirt; but Samrat never gets jealous about this, mind you. Despite his hobby of flirting, Samrat has a heart of gold. He fought with a few guys when they teased his friend Gunjan, and since then has been having feelings for her. He teases her quite a few times a day about this, and loves to annoy her in many different ways, sometimes even purposely picking a fight with Gunjan, just because he loves to see her blush, get annoyed, and even argue with him.
Uday & Diya Patil (Jas Karan Singh & Navina Bole): 19 years old. They are twins, and the only non-Punjabi's in the group ' they are Maharashtrians. Uday is the elder one, by about 2 hours or so, but Diya seems more mature and sensible than him. Diya calls Uday as Dodo (as does everyone in their group), while he calls her Dids (and Samrat calls her Candy, Gunjan calls her Di, Benji calls her darling; only Mayank calls her by her real name, Diya). Uday, like Samrat, also has a heart of gold. He is innocent and kind and nice to everyone; the only bad thing about him is that he is very protective over his sister, and dares to beat up anyone who hurts her. Diya is not as innocent, but is still as kind and nice to everyone whom she likes, and who she feels is a good person. Diya is more outspoken ' if she hates a person or hates what he or she is doing, she will speak out and reprimand him or her ' while Uday just prefers to keep quite in that sense. Uday loves to crack jokes and always has some trick or the other up his sleeves, but despite his loving nature and wonderful sense of humour, he has not found himself a girlfriend or someone he really likes. Diya on the other hand, has a boyfriend ' Benji ' another one in their gang. She loves him a lot, and has been going out with him for close to 2 years now.
Other Characters: (they are not that important yet, and just play minor roles, so I won't describe their characteristics much)
5) Shailaja Kashyap (Bui): 50 years old. Elder sister of Vikram and Vijay. Raised her twin daughter and son as a single mother after her husband left her more than 15 years ago. Both son and daughter now study in the US, so she is alone in their Borivali home. Treats Nupur and Gunjan as her own daughters, though. Bui will act as a catalyst between Mayank and Nupur, as well as the other couples in the story later on. She will be joining hands with Shilpa Aunty.
