Well, I'm not sure how many updates it will take, but Geet will not let many days go by before she confronts Maan about the flowers and.....

Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 34 - Take me home

Geet had been so shaken by the recent events that Maan was forced to pry her off him and make her sit in the jeep. Even then she wouldn't let him out of her sight, insisting that something be done for his wounds. When she couldn't find a first aid kit after searching the jeep, Geet made Maan give her his handkerchief to tie around his arm. With nothing else available, Geet ripped her dupatta lengthwise and helped Maan take off his shirt so she could bandage his back.

All through Geet's ministrations Maan was restless, thinking about what he would do if any of their attackers awakened. When she was finished, despite Geet's protests, Maan left, making sure he also took with him the man who had tried to kill him. That was how the police found them when they arrived, Maan securing the assailants with their own scarfs, Geet still crying softly with worry.

The police quickly took charge of the situation, confiscating all the swords and knives of the men, and locking them inside their vehicles. The police inspector requested Geet and Maan to come with them to the police station to give their statements. Geet was concerned about Maan driving, which irritated Maan but she paid no attention, and also wanted a doctor to check his wounds. The inspector assured her that he would have a doctor meet them at the station and one of his officers could drive their jeep.

Maan wanted to protest that he was fine, but seeing how upset Geet was, thought it was better to just get it over with. He was also concerned that the threat might not be totally over, and wanted to get to the police station as soon as possible. Maan helped Geet into the backseat of the jeep and then got in on the other side. He hissed in pain when his back touched against the seat back. Geet immediately moved over next to him, grabbing his hand and looking up into his face with concern. When Maan patted her hand to indicate he was fine, Geet slipped her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder.

It took more than half an hour to arrive at the police station, by which time Geet had drifted off to sleep. Maan woke her gently and helped her out of the car as she was a bit groggy. As soon as she woke up fully, she started asking where the doctor was. A nice looking middle aged man was introduced to them, and Geet requested that he attend Maan immediately.

"Mr. Khurana, if you will come with me? The inspector will let us use his office," said the doctor, pointed the way.

"No, I want you to check over my wife first."

"What? Maan, I"m fine, you're the one who..."

Maan ignored her and continued, "She's six months pregnant! I don't know what those dogs have done to her, but you don't get a look at me until she's taken care of."

Geet continued trying to protest but the doctor took her away for a check up, and Maan got down to talking with the police inspector. He shared his concerns that Geet's family were the ones behind the attack. He wanted the police to go to the Handa residence, but they weren't willing to do that without some evidence of their involvement. Maan was not happy, but the inspector assured him that they would discover who was behind the attack and punish all the culprits. While waiting for the doctor to finish with Geet, Maan told the police everything that had happened.

Soon the doctor was finished with Geet and it was Maan's turn. The wound on his back was not very deep. All the doctor had to do was disinfect it and apply a bandage. The cut on his arm required stitches, which Maan decided to have the doctor do at the police station to save time. As he was being stitched up, Maan questioned the doctor about Geet's health.

"She didn't complain of any pain, and I couldn't find that they had harmed her in any way. Her blood pressure was high, but that is not surprising in the situation. I recommend that she avoid stress and receive as much rest as possible for the next two days. Continue to monitor her health. She's a young, healthy woman and if nothing crops up, I don't see the need to worry."

The doctor offered to give Maan something for his pain, but Maan declined. Once the stitching was finished, all that was left for the doctor to do was instruct Maan on how to care for his wounds and to warn him about going to the hospital if any infection set in. The doctor cautioned him not to be stubborn, as he didn't just have himself to worry about, but his wife also.

When Maan was finished with the doctor, he went to join Geet, who had been telling her side of the story to the inspector. She again inquired about Maan's health from the doctor, who assured her that her husband was fine. Maan didn't like how Geet was looking a little pale, and asked her if she still wanted to see Rajji today, given everything that happened.

Geet's mouth trembled a little as she told him, "Maan, I want to go home."

"I think that's a good choice. You take some rest and we'll find away to visit with your sister tomorrow."

"No, I want to go home. I don't want to stay here anymore. Please take me home now." Tears slowly started down Geet's cheeks as she looked at Maan pleadingly. He came over and gave her a comforting hug, as he tried to figure out what she meant. Surely she didn't mean the Handa haveli?

"Geet, do you mean you want to go back to Delhi?"

Nodding her head, she replied, "Yes, right away."

Not wanting to upset her any further, Maan agreed and the two were soon on their way driving back to Ludiana. Maan left his phone number with the inspector, telling him that he wanted to be informed of any new developments. Upon arriving in Ludiana, Maan booked them into the best hotel, as it would be impossible for the plane to come for them until the next day. He also requested the manager to have a doctor called to take a look at Geet, because Maan was worried about her behavior. She had still been quite weepy, and more than once said she was not hungry when Maan had tried to get her to eat.

When the doctor got to their suit, Geet was confused about why Maan had asked the doctor to come. She didn't want to be checked over again, but Maan insisted. After finishing with Geet, Maan and the doctor talked about her for awhile. The doctor could find nothing physically wrong, and suggested that Geet was just mentally exhausted from the days events. She requested Maan try to get Geet to eat something and then make sure she had a peaceful sleep.

It took Maan awhile, but he was finally able to get Geet to agree to eat some apple slices, which he fed her himself. He then very sternly made her get ready for bed. Only when she was all tucked in, did Maan start to think about himself. Going into the bathroom, he stripped his clothes off and carefully undid his bandages. His back stung, and his arm throbbed, but nothing like they had earlier. The warmth of the shower soothed his aching muscles, but did nothing to sooth his troubled mind.

He felt like the whole thing was his fault. If he hadn't suggested that they come back to Hoshiarpur, none of this would have happened. Maan thought that he should have been aware that it might not be safe for Geet to go back home. He had thought that with Brij in jail there would be no problem, that if nothing else, his presence would be a deterrent. He had been wrong.

When Maan came out of the bathroom, he thought he would see Geet sleeping. Instead, she was sitting in the middle of the bed with her arms around her knees. Maan was surprised and became upset when he saw the tears running down her cheeks.

"Geet," he said as he sat on the bed next to her, "you have to stop crying. It isn't good for you or the baby."

Geet didn't respond to that, saying instead, "I was so scared." Maan placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "What if something had happened to you? What if you were killed, what would I do?"

"Geet, nothing will happen to me. Try to put it out of your mind and go to sleep."

Geet continued crying softly and looked at Maan with emotion filled eyes until she eventually requested pitifully, "Hold me."

With those words Geet wrapped her arms around Maan's chest and placed her head on his shoulder, totally shocking him. He hesitatingly placed his arms around Geet, thinking that it would only be for a few minutes and then she would calm down. However, each time Maan tried to pull away, Geet would cling to him, making it impossible for him to let her go. Eventually, Maan realized that Geet had no inclination to let him go, turned out the lights, and husband and wife went to sleep in each others arms.
