Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 31 - Maan Singh Khurana to dance

Geet couldn't figure out what had gotten into Maan, that he had eaten all those chilies. She turned to ask him, but was stopped by the sight of lassi residue just above his upper lip. Not wanting to embarrass him by saying something, she quietly pointed instead. Maan gave her a confused look and raised his eyebrows in question. She pointed again, trying to also indicate the problem with her eyes. Maan misunderstood her and started wiping a stray tear or two. Geet could tell that he wasn't going to understand her meaning, so she leaned across the table and reached out with her hand.

As soon as Geet touched his lip, Maan felt like time stood still. For the second time in just a few minutes Geet and purposely touched him. Somewhere in the back of his mind he realized the reason why, that she didn't mean anything special by it, but all he could do was stare at her in awe and revel in the feel of her smooth fingers running over his lip. When Geet was finished wiping away the lassi, she moved back and glanced at her fingers. Seeing the lassi that was now on them, she lifted her fingers to her mouth and licked the lassi off.

Maan's eyes nearly popped out of his head. As if feeling Geet wipe his mouth with her fingers wasn't enough, seeing her put those same fingers in her own mouth just about ended him. A nuclear bomb would not have been able to cause his gaze to shift from her luscious lips. Maan really had no idea how long he was staring at Geet, but he finally broke out of his trance when she abruptly stopped eating and stood up.

Not really sure why she was getting up, Maan did the same. He then noticed that all the other people in the dhabba had also stood up and were moving to the edge of the street. Maan noticed that he could hear drums and looking around, saw that a baraat procession was passing by them.

"Come on Maan, let's join them."

"Are you kidding? You expect Maan Singh Khurana to dance in front of a bunch of strangers? Besides, we don't have time, we need to be going soon."

"Oh, Maan, why are you so boring all the time. Come, it will be fun!" Geet grabbed Maan's hand and pulled him over near where Sukhram, Simran, and there children were already moving their bodies to the beat of the drums.

Maan felt very uncomfortable, and just stood, looking at the people dancing around him. He wanted to tell Geet to stop this foolishness, and finish her food, so they could be on their way. Yet, when he looked at her smiling, moving her arms in the air and her body swaying to the beat, he could do nothing but look at her longingly. Feeling a pull on his shirt, Maan looked down and saw one of the hoodlum brothers looking back up at him.

"Uncle, stop looking at Aunty so much, you can do that at home. You should dance now."

Instead of being angry with the child's forwardness, Maan smiled, realizing the truth of the boy's words. Looking back at Geet, he felt a longing to be as happy and carefree as she was. He knew it would make her happy if he joined her, and so he decided to give in. Not quite at ease in his movements, Maan did his best to dance like everyone else. Geet observed his attempts and smiled broadly. She moved to be right next to him and danced her heart out.

As the baraat procession passed by, and the customers began moving back to their tables, Simran said to her husband, "See, he's not a strange person, just a little shy maybe."

Geet giggled at this remark, while Maan glared at her and demanded that she finish her food so that they could leave. Geet agreed, but only if Maan also ate his food. Thinking it would just waste more time to argue, Maan gave in. Soon they were both finished, the bill was paid, they said farewell to all and they got up to leave.

While escorting Geet back to the jeep, Maan asked, "So were you surprised that I could enjoy at a dhabba."

"Yes," said Geet frankly. As they walked away from the dhabba, Geet continued, "You know, I guess sometimes you're not such a dusht daanav at all."

"What? That's the second time you've called me that. Why?"

Geet, who had been about it sit in the jeep looked at him nervously and said, "Woh...uh, mein..." but was interrupted by a female voice calling, "Geet!"

Looking around for the owner of the voice, Geet exclaimed, "Dai ma! Aap yahan kaise?"

"I had some work," answered Dai ma, as she came over near Geet. Looking Geet up and down, she asked, "You are well? Everything is alright with you?"

"Yes, Dai ma, I'm well."

Dai ma looked over at Maan, then again back at Geet. "This is your husband?" Geet nodded. "He treats you well? Takes good care of you?"

Maan did not like this stranger questioning Geet about his treatment of her, as if he was some terrifying husband. However Geet's answer soothed his feelings somewhat. "Yes, he treats me very well, like a princess even." The last bit of her answer was delivered with a bit of a smirk, designed to needle Maan over his sensitivity about being considered a prince.

"This is good," said Dai ma. Moving her hand to place it on Geet's head, she proceeded to give Geet a blessing. "Live a long and happy life with your husband and children, my child."

As Maan and Geet both watched Dai ma walk away, Maan questioned Geet about how she knew this woman. Geet explained how when her family had wanted her to have an abortion, Dai ma had believed in Geet, and refused Daarji's command. Again hearing of Geet's treatment by her family had Maan clenching his jaws and fists in anger. Geet, who had not intended to upset Maan by telling this, tried to calm him down.

"Maan, don't think about it now. It's in the past. You were in a hurry to leave before, right? Let's go." Maan, remember Geet's earlier words about wanting only happy thoughts today, tried to let his anger go as he helped his wife to sit in the jeep.

In less than an hour they had reached the village. Geet asked Maan about how they would meet Rajji without having problems. Maan explained that they would drop off their luggage, spend some time at her land, then in a few hours they would meet Rajji at her school. That way, they did not need to bother meeting any of the other family members, since Geet wanted to avoid them. Geet was impressed with Maan's plan, but wanted him to tell her what they would be doing at her land.

All through this conversation, Maan and Geet were oblivious to the stir that Geet's arrival back in town was creating. People began to talk amongst themselves about the incident that had led to Geet's departure. They wondered why she was back, and discussed how the Handa family had lost the respect of the locals and had been virtually ostracized for their actions. Some wondered if Geet had come back to reconcile with her family. Others wondered about the man she was with. They had seen him before, and new that he also had caused some trouble for the Handa family, over Geet's land. Observing Maan's formidable aura, none of the villagers had the courage to speak with Geet. They had to be satisfied with gossip for the moment.

Upon reaching the house, Maan and Geet spent only a very few minutes bringing their luggage inside and freshening up, before leaving again. After helping Geet back into the jeep, instead of getting in himself, Maan reached into his pocket and pulled out his handkerchief. Geet looked at him in confusion and wondered aloud if he thought she was going to cry. Maan didn't answer. Instead, he unfolded the handkerchief and began rolling it up.

"Maan, what? Why are you doing this?" question Geet as Maan placed the rolled up handkerchief over her eyes and tied it tight.

"When we get to your land I want 'it' to be a surprise."

"You want 'what' to be a surprise?"

"You'll see."

Geet was totally astounded by Maan's actions. She never would have thought that her husband was the type of person who planned surprises, but she liked it. It turned what would have been a familiar and somewhat boring drive into a grand adventure. Tat didn't stop her from trying to get Maan to tell her exactly what he was planning. She begged, whined, yelled, called Maan dusht daanav, all to no avail. Maan would only say that she could find out when they arrived.

It was not too long before the jeep finally came to a stop. Geet immediately reached for the blindfold, but Maan would not allow her to take it off. He came and helped her get out of the jeep, took hold of her hand and had her walk a few feet before stopping.

Moving to stand behind Geet, Maan reached up and untied the blindfold, whisking it away in one smooth motion. Geet had been blindfolded for over ten minutes, so the sudden difference in light made it difficult to see. She blinked her eyes a few times, not quite believing what they saw.
