How did hindi spread across India

Don't know about pre-independence era but since then Hindi Cinema (Bollywood) has played a major role in proliferation of Hindi across non-Hindi states. Aur haan three languages formula bhi important tha.

BTW, British Raj ke time schools mein Hindi hoti thi?

it sounds better and more sophisticated... easier to say words.. more convenient for daily use.. or perhaps hindi wallas do it more thereby increasing the hindi wala population.

Hindi is the closest to Sanskrit but Sanskrit as a language is sooo rich in culture that it takes years to perfect it. Hindi is the next best option to Sanskrit. Also, a lot of other regional languages come really close to hindi and if you can speak hindi you can atleast understand other languages like Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Rajasthani.
One more thing... Hindi was not spread by the Mughals. They believed in speaking Urdu which was derived from a combination of Sanskrit and Persian language and just happens to sound very similar to hindi and hence helped in communication with the common man.
