Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 20 - Awwwww, a nursery!

The next morning at breakfast, Savitri questioned Maan on what he was planning to do with his Saturday. Maan explained how he intended to go to the office for a few hours to get some extra work done for this new potential project he was working up for Mr. Chopra. Savitri did not approve.

"Maan, are you telling me that you are going to allow my bahu to go nursery shopping alone? I thought you were going to look after her, but it seems like you this work is more important than your wife and child." Savitri knew that she would hit a nerve with that statement, but she just shook her head and said, "Very bad!"

While Savitri had been speaking, Maan had started choking on his juice. When he finished coughing, he looked over at Geet and asked, "What nursery?"

Geet looks back at Maan, wondering why he sounds so confused. "The baby's nursery, of course," she replied. "Dadiji showed me the room that used to be your nursery and I think it will be perfect. It's just down the hall from our room. However, it's not set up to be a nursery anymore, so we have to redecorate it." Geet couldn't understand why Maan was just sitting there, looking lost.

The fact was, with the mention of a nursery, Maan for the first time felt the full reality of Geet's pregnancy. In a about 4 months they would have a baby. A little human being who needed a nursery and clothes, to be held and fed and protected and taught. In all his life Maan Singh Khurana had never backed away from a challenge, but he wished he could back away from this one. It wasn't that he didn't want Geet and the baby, but he was worried about letting them down, of not being strong enough, of failing them as he had failed Dev and Vicky.

In a vague effort to deny the inevitable truth of becoming a father, Maan said, "What is the need to start on a nursery now? It's months before the baby will be born. When the time comes, we can call in our interior designers to complete it. That will be much easier and less stressful for you."

"But Maan, that's so impersonal! This is our baby. I want to be the one who chooses the colors and the furniture and the toys and sets it all up. It shows how special the baby is to me."

Savitri could tell that Maan still needed a bit of a push, so she said, "Bahu, it's no use trying to convince him. It's obvious that to Maan Singh Khurana, work is more important than family. How many times have I requested him to do things with me and it's always the same excuse. 'Dadima, I'm busy, I have work to do.' His father was just the same. No, Bahu, I'm afraid you'll just have to get used to doing things on your own."

"What nonsense!" exclaimed Maan, finally loosing his lost look, and regaining his customary arrogance.

"Then you'll go with Geet and help her set up the nursery?"

"Of course!" Savitri and Geet smiled at each other over another victory.

****************

Once Maan had agreed to accompany her, Geet took charge of their activities. She had a list of baby store recommendations from Nandini, and she excitedly dragged Maan to every one of them. They looked at curtains, rugs, baby blankets, changing tables, rocking chairs, everything you could think of. Maan was used to decorating and designing for adults, he felt out of his league with baby stuff. Geet would keep asking his opinion, and every time his answer was the same. He liked whatever she liked.

Geet was becoming more and more frustrated with his responses. It made her feel like he didn't care. She almost got to the point of telling him to go home when he finally gave some input into the choice of a crib. After they had been shown all the different models by the sales person, Maan had insisted that they should get a crib that could later be used as a bed when the baby was older. Maan didn't know it, but this insistence saved him from having a very angry wife. Geet could barely hold back the tears from thoughts of her baby growing up. To distract herself, she started telling Maan all her ideas for painting the baby's nursery.

"I definitely want colors that would work for a boy or a girl. Yellow would work, I suppose, but I've never really liked yellow rooms. Green, maybe."

"Are you thinking of doing the painting yourself?" questioned Maan.

"Of course," came the reply.

"Oh, no. No you don't. If you really want the room to be repainted, then we'll hire it done." Geet tried to protest, but Maan wasn't having any of it. "Geet, paint fumes are dangerous, even for normal people. You're pregnant. Just think what kind of effect it would have on the baby if you inhaled something like that. No, I won't let you do it."

Geet began to pout, saying, "If I let you hire someone, then I'll have to wait a to get started on the room. I don't want to wait, I want to get started right away."

"I won't make you wait. I can arrange for them to paint the room on Monday, while we're at work."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

****************

They finished shopping for furnishings in the morning, but as Geet wanted to visit Nandini and do some shopping in her store also, Maan insisted that they have lunch first. When they got to the restaurant, Geet needed to use the ladies room, so Maan said he would get a table, and for her to come when she was ready. Geet didn't realize, but her clothes were eliciting some comments from a few of the more snobbish customers. When she was ready to join Maan, she came to the front of the restaurant, trying to look around for him. While she was searching, the manager came up to her and requested that she go with him. Thinking that he would take her to Maan, she followed. When she saw him leading her out of the restaurant she was very upset.

"Madam, we can't have people just wandering around our restaurant. Please, kindly leave."

"I'm not going to leave. I need to join my husband, he's waiting for me."

"And your husband is?"

"Mr. Maan Singh Khurana. He doesn't like to be kept waiting, so I would appreciate if you took me to him."

"Madam, really. I know Mr. Khurana, and I know that lots of girls would like to be married to someone as rich as him, but please don't make a scene and just leave quietly."

Geet was beginning to be very upset with this stupid manager. "Look, Sir, I intend to join my husband." She tried to go around him, but he just blocked her way. Getting angrier, she said, "Don't try to stop me." The manager still would not let her pass. Geet was about to start cursing him, but fortunately for the manager, Maan finally came along looking for Geet.

"Geet, why were you taking so long? I was starting to worry. You weren't ill again, were you?"

"No, I wasn't ill, but this...."

Maan didn't let her finish, but instead put his hand at her back and started escorting her to the private table he had requested. The manager, realizing he may have made a big error, became very helpful, in the hopes that it would smooth over the whole incident. Geet still wasn't happy with him, but she let it go, as she had something more important she wanted to talk to Maan about.

"Maan do you usually work so many extra hours, late evenings, Saturdays, and such like that?"

"Quite often, actually," was the reply.

"I hope you're going to change your schedule once the baby is born."

"What, why?"

Geet made a frustrated sound. Then, trying to speak calmly, she said, "I know the business is very important to you. I know you work very hard, and that you are respected by everyone. However, family is important also. I...I...want..." Geet was a little nervous to speak, but she had to say it anyway. "I want my baby's father to be with me, to spend time with our child, not always be at work."

Knowing Maan's past, and how he had spent very little time with his parents, Geet didn't want to bring up any bad memories. Yet, she felt that she needed to get some sort of promise from him that he would give time to their family. Continuing, she said, "A child needs both of its parents, hai na?"

Geet could see that her words had caused him to be lost in the past. She looked at him worriedly, but when he answered, "Haan," she smiled and cheerfully enjoyed her food.
