Nothing Can Keep Us ApartPart 6 - (Maha Episode 1) The story of Geet's betrayal revealed
All Maan could think as he stood in the hospital, trying to process what he had been told, was that Geet was married. His Geet was married! He remembered back to the night they returned separately from Amritsar. If she was married and the guy had left her, then who was that someone he had assumed to be her boyfriend. This was just too confusing. He needed more information, but how to get it? Munshiji. Munshiji is still in Hoshiarpur. He should be able to dig up the facts. Maan got out his phone and dialed Munshiji's number as quickly as he could. It seemed to him that the phone just kept ringing and ringing.
When Munshiji finally answered Maan bit out, "What took you so long? Never mind. I need you to get some information for me, and I need it yesterday!"
"What information do you require, Chote Saab?"
"I need to know everything about Geet Handa, her family, and anything to do with her being married. I also need to know about a young man who was reported missing who supposedly had a relationship with one of the village girls." Maan couldn't quite bring himself to suggest that Geet might have been the village girl. He still wasn't sure that he believed the story of Geet being abandoned by her husband. It was virtually impossible for Maan to believe that any man could leave Geet. He certainly wouldn't be able to.
"I will do my best, Chote Saab."
"Do more than your best. I NEED this information now."
"Ji, Chote Saab. I will call you as soon as possible."
Maan angrily ended the call, frustrated that he had to wait. He started pacing the corridor again, the overwhelming anger he felt needing some sort of outlet. After some time a nurse came and said that she would show them to the room that Geet had been moved to, but that it would not be possible for anyone to see her until the doctor said it was alright.
While Pinky and her father found some chairs to sit in, Maan continued to pace. Pinky was eyeing a nearby vending machine until her father finally gave her some money. In a flash she was up and standing in front of the machine, debating what she should get. None of this did Maan notice. Just before Maan again repeated his pacing loop, his cell phone rang. Without looking at the call number Maan answered with, "Munshiji, tell me what you've found."
"What?" came the response. "MK, where are you? Have you forgotten that we have an important client meeting today? There is still so much left to do, and how are we supposed to present without you? Is this Geet really more important that your business career?" The entire time Sasha was talking Maan's jaws clenched harder and harder until he could barely say, "Sasha, I can't talk now. Handle it!"
Just seconds after hanging up on Sasha, Maan's phone rang again. Not wanted to speak with Sasha again, Maan carefully looked at the call number. This time it was the call he wanted to take.
After Maan answered, Munshiji told him all that he had been able to find out. Munshiji described how Geet had exposed her family in front of the village, telling how they had got her married secretly, how they had told her to forget the husband that had deserted her, and how they had tried to have her killed once they discovered that she was pregnant. He also explained how she helped send Brij to jail, along with Gurvinder, who was the one that Maan had enquired about.
"Who is this Gurvinder?" growled Maan, jealously, although he didn't know it.
"His wife was Geet's friend, Channi. Channi was killed by Brij the same way he attempted to kill Geet. Apparently they also tried to kill Gurvinder, and Geet was helping him." Upon hearing this, Maan thought back to when Geet had asked him to hide Gurvinder, how he saved her from Brij and tended her wounds, how he urged her to go to the police, and how he left her when she refused. How could he have so misunderstood the situation?
"Are you sure this information is accurate?" questioned Maan, still unable to quite believe everything he had heard.
"Oh, yes, Chote Saab. It's all in the police reports, and I have received confirmation from many of the villagers who witnessed the incident."
"Thank you, Munshiji, that's all for now." As Maan cut the call, he felt his anger begin to give way to something much worse. The pain he felt in his heart was almost unbearable. How could anyone treat such a sweet, innocent girl like Geet in this manner? The difficulties that she had been forced to endure were enough to break the strongest person. Yet, Geet had not broken. How alone she must have felt, dealing with the situation by herself. Well, she wasn't alone any longer. From now on he would help Geet in every way possible. "The first thing I will do," thought Maan as his anger came back full force, "is deal with that inhuman devil who dared to treat my Geet in such a fashion!"
"Mr. Khurana?" came a voice that jolted Maan out of his thoughts. Looking up he saw Doctor Gupta walking towards him. It was apparent that she had just left the room Geet was occupying. "Your wife can receive visitors now. However, I believe it would be best if she only has to deal with one visitor at a time. I'd also like to speak to you a bit before you see your wife."
"What is it doctor?" asked Maan, who noticed that she was calling Geet his wife, but decided against telling anything different.
"Your wife told us that she has not received any prenatal care. She also said that there have been some stressful events at work. This is a concern, especially with the threat of miscarriage. She should be taking prenatal vitamins, as well scheduling frequent check ups to monitor her health, and the health of the fetus. It's also important that she avoid stress as much as possible."
"I understand, Doctor. I will talk with you again later, if I may? Right now I'd like to speak with Geet."
Maan quietly entered the room and immediately his eyes went to Geet, quietly resting on the bed, her hands tenderly resting on her abdomen, her eyes unfocussed, as though she was deep in thought.
"Geet," Maan said softly, and Geet turned her head when she heard her name, but seeing him, quickly looked the other direction. Maan, understanding that she was feeling shy and ashamed, felt that he needed to reassure her that all would be well. Still, he couldn't keep from scolding her a little.
"Geet you have made a big mistake, a very big mistake." Geet's head lowered a little. "You couldn't tell me what was going on? We've know each other all these months and you couldn't say anything to me? What did you think would happen? That I would misunderstand you and yell at you?" Geet's head lowered even more. "I can see that you did. Koi baat nahi. I know everything now. You have nothing to be ashamed of, and I am not going to yell at you."
When Man said that he knew everything, Geet looked up. "What do you mean, you know everything?" she asked. "You couldn't know..."
"That your husband deserted you the day after your marriage? That your family tried to kill you when they discovered you were pregnant? That despite your stubbornness with me, you actually had your brother sent to prison? Yes, Geet, I do know."
Geet didn't know what to think. She had been wanting for a long time to talk to Maan about all that had happened, but she never thought that he would come to know this way. She didn't even know how he found out so much. The whole situation was more than she could bear. Tears started pouring out of her eyes, and down her cheeks. Seeing her tears increased the pain in Maan's heart ten-fold. Rushing to her side he began wiping away her tears with his fingers, murmuring, "Ro mat, ro mat," over and over.
When Geet finally stopped crying, Maan said, "Geet, you do not need to feel alone anymore. I intend to give all the help within my power. Tell me the name of your husband and I will see to it that you can divorce him quickly."
"What?" asked Geet. "Divorce? There will be no divorce."
"Geet," responded Maan with a shocked voice, "you can't intend to remain married to that looser. He won't be any good for you or the child." A terrible thought occurred to Maan, and he asked, horrified, "you don't still love him, do you?"
"Love him?" responded Geet. "Of course I don't love him. I hate him!"
"Then tell me his name," came the insistent demand.
"Maan, it is quite obvious that you do not know everything. If you did, you wouldn't suggest divorce. There will be no divorce, because I am not really married."
"What?"
"Do you remember when we went to Amritsar, and you thought I was running away from home?" Geet looked at Maan for conformation, and when he nodded, she continued, "I thought I was going to meet him. I didn't really want anything to do with him, but I wanted his help to save my baby from my family. Instead of meeting him, I met his wife. Yes his wife. He was already married, and she pretended to be his sister-in-law when they came to meet my family. She told me how they had arraigned the whole fake marriage, and that he was only her husband. They arranged the marriage just so that they could get my land. She tried to convince me to get an abortion, but I wouldn't do it. How could I kill my own child? It's the only family I have left."
Maan felt like he was in a nightmare. The more he learned about Geet's experience, the worse it got. He again began pressuring her to name the culprit that had treated her so despicably. Geet adamantly denied saying his name. Finally Maan asked why she wouldn't tell him.
"Maan, it's not your problem."
"Geet, this is not about whose problem it is, it's about getting you justice."
"I was the one who was wronged, and I am the one who will get justice for myself. It is my responsibility only, no one else's."
Maan was about to continue arguing with her when his phone rang. Looking at the number, he realized that it was his brother Dev calling. Well, at least it wasn't Sasha.
"Hello."
"Bhai, how is it that there is a meeting that is so important that I have to attend, and you're not here? I even came early ony to find out from Sasha that you have been out of the office all day. You don't seriously think that you can be missing in action today, do you?"
"I... no ... Theek hai. I'm on my way. If I'm late, make my excuses, please."
"Sure thing, Bhai. See you soon." Maan had been watching Geet all through his conversation with Dev, and he could see from her face that she intended to be very stubborn.
"Geet, I need to leave. However, don't think that our conversation is finished. I will be back later tonight. Oh, and the hospital thinks that you are my wife. Don't tell them any different, it will be less hassle that way." Maan walked out of the room as Geet fumed and wished that she could run after him and hit him with something.
Maan, on the other hand, was trying to think of ways he could convince Geet to give up the name of her betrayer. Most of his ideas involved arguing with or yelling at her, which he new might feel right, but wouldn't get any results. Suddenly, he had an idea. Getting out his phone he began dialing as his driver left the hospital and started back to the office.
When his call was answered Maan asked, "Dadima, ek kaam karo?"
Precap:
Another maha episode with more revelations.Author's note: just to make sure that everyone understands in my story the marriage really was fake. No one considers Dev and Geet married, not Dev, not Naintara, not Geet, not Maan, and not the law. Dev + Geet = not married. I only mention this because who knows what kind of crazy stuff the Cv's might do that I don't want to be a part of. ð
