hey, opti first i wanna say that baba was not trying to make his guilt at conscience at ease by asking that question from kesar,it's just that he has always seen his mom and bhabhi never objacting to such abuse so he was expeccting the same thing from his wife.i would say that he was not wrong in expecting this considering his enviourment.secondly he was not trying 2justify his actions but whats to know as what big he has done which made prats so angry, he was not able to understand the reason of her anger.
Pragati you are entitled to your views but I dont agree. If he really could not understand her anger why was he repeatedly thinking of his slap and feeling distinctly uncomfortable.
I also recollect in an earlier scene where Shakti was hitting Kesar and Pratigya was looking frightened, he assured her that not to worry, these things happen in this households - men beat their wives but he will never do that to her. If he felt that it was a pretty ordinary thing for a man to hit his wife and his wife to silently bear it why would he feel the need to reassure her that he will not do it? It is another thing that he ultimately did what he professed he will not.
Then there is this scene where komal complains about the Saxena household and blames him for getting her married there because of his own desire to marry Pratigya, he tells her that she is lucky to be married in a house where the men treat their women well and do not hit them like they do in the Thakur household. If she had married in her own community, she would be getting hit like his mother and bhabhi. This shows that he understands that Pratigya comes from a different background from his. since he claims to love her to death, should he not ensure that she is treated the way she would have been had she married into a more sane household? How can he expect her to become thick sinned and silent suffer like the women of his household?
So given all these incidents, I think he was already feeling guilty but wanted some consolation from people close to him to say he was not really wrong.
