Most of the time I can trust my ear. Usually I watch the show first, record
it on DVR and watch the show again with my husband so I can discuss
whatever I find off sur or great stuff. I get his constructive opinion on
things. just thought I explain my side. But I did not find Hema going off
sur in "Sun Mitwa".

No time to read all of the posts but this caught my eye. I think he slipped
slightly on sur at the beginning of the song. IMO, he deserved an 8 or 9
and Vinit deserved a 7 or 8 since he slipped more and had some breath
issues.

If my memory serves me correctly, that day AS gave a lower than
deserved score to Debo while HR gave a higher than deserved score to
Debo so I think that ID returned the favors. Of course it was wrong to do
that but I think that morals really were checked at the door owards the
end!

There was one with comedy songs, but it was not a "dedicated" comedy episode. For eg, in that episode, Vineet sang "aake seedhi padi", but only mukhda which was repeated a few times. He did not sing the stanza. I don't remember if the contestants were evaluated on those songs.

They did do many "composer-based" episodes though.

I hope I am not intruding here - I notice some excellent points above, about having a rubric for the judging, different rounds, etc. Maybe you guys could write to Gajji and Zee. You may not get an answer back, but if they like your ideas enough, they will probably steal them from you 😉

Looks like I found some old time SRGM fans interested in the technical
merits of a song. Great posts and I am sure that other fans would be
interested.

Thanks. Two things that would happen with a less subjective Mento-meter (although it doesn't affect the final outcome):

1. Contestants would work harder on diction issues (be more concious of lyrics)
2. The will not choose very easy songs.

Ofcourse, reducing the subjectivity, also prevents the pyschological games the mentors play with each other and the contestants. They have to really justify a questionable low score.

I think this will truely show who is a good singer and who is not.

I am pretty impressed with What Umm has said. But here r my queries.

1)U metioned that Hemu pronounciation had some prob in Saathiya and thats y He dint deserve High marks
where as in mentioning abt Chalechalo,Where Vinit had pronounced jit instead of Jeet(And also he forgot some lyrics in between) U have mentioned That Lyrics and Diction is not that important but it sounds like very biased mind against Hemu

one thing i can say after all these views and counterviews that Ummm is not biased

its just that she has a different viewpoint and pays more emphasis on 'SUR'

whereas the rest are placing more importance on voice
hema has a very good voice but that does not mean he is infallible
i am a big fan of hema
i hope everyone knows
but i respect Ummm right to discuss on hema singing
i tend to give feeling of my heart the most consideration
but a trained singer or musician will not do likewise
catching sur on our TVs is comparatively difficult compared to the High quality bose headphones that are in the studio

and i agree to the viewpoint that 10/10 is not possible at least not in music

to give a personal example the song that touched my heart most was I love u by nihira but when i heard the trained musicians in SRGMP forum give their ratings saying that it was a very easy song to sing i was shocked to say the least

Thanks bangboy!

I had mentioned that pronounciation was one of the problems in Saathiya, but the song is so difficult to sing live, that I'm not surprised that Hema got a 10 just for attempting it and carrying it off well. But it would have helped if the mentors explained the overpowering factors of that song that got Hema earn a full score despite the mistakes. The same mistakes in other songs probably got him lower marks.

Missed lyrics and incorrect diction are problems, no matter who the singer is. It's just that the wrong diction has been more pronounced in case of Hema (when comparing Hema and Vineet), because of his upbringing in the south. Vineet too has diction issues.

Diction to me is not very important when compared to sur, because it is something one can work on with relative ease. Missed or incorrect lyrics are also not that big of a problem as compared to sur - that's my thought, but my biggest critic on that thought is my husband. He says that lyrics are half the character of a song, and abusing them is as bad as singing besura.
