SYNOPSIS

Buniyaad relates the story of Master Haveliram, a patriotic, principled man, who chooses teaching as his way of building the ideal society of which he dreams. One student stands apart from the rest—beautiful Laajo, an innocent child-woman—and Haveliram finds himself drawn to her magnetic yet earthy charm. Their friendship blossoms beyond the guru-shishya relationship, and "Masterji" and "Laajoji" seal their love with marriage. Years roll by smoothly and their sons and daughter grow up in a loving home.

Suddenly, fate takes a cruel twist and their motherland is divided into two countries—India and Pakistan. Communal riots erupt all over and Haveliram and his family are forced to flee empty-

Buniyaad gripped the nation in the mid-eighties and emotionally charged grandparents, husbands, wives and children with its true-to-life depiction of the heroic struggles of two Punjabi families ravaged by communal riots, which erupted all over the country post the India-Pakistan partition in 1947.

The most striking feature of this historical family epic was its poignant performances; relatively unknown actors Alok Nath, Anita Kanwar, Kanwaljit, Kiran Juneja and Vijendra Ghagte emerged from the shadows and portrayed the heartrending experiences of Master Haveliram, Laajo, Satbir, Veerawalli, and Brij Bhan—ordinary men and women who struggled to live and love in an era of violence and destruction.

The intensity and honesty of the performances, the driving truth of the simple story, the technical prowess of the serial, and the sonorous voice of Anup Jalota left an indelible mark in the minds of all who watched, laughed and cried with the Buniyaad heroes, for two epochal years.

By 1987, Director Ramesh Sippy had given Indian television just what he gave Indian cinema—another Sholay; another towering benchmark for the rest to achieve.

Television has come a long way since. Characters have appeared and serials have gone. But even today, twenty years later, India remembers Buniyaad, clear as daylight, and smiles when she relives the coyly spoken names Masterji and Laajoji, just like she did for the first time in 1985.

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

"Lajoji (Anita Kanwar) ne khaya badaam, usme se nikla Haveliram (Alok Nath), Haveliram ne kholi almaari, usme se nikli Veerawaali (Kiran Juneja), Veerawaali ne khaya paan, usme se nikla Vrushbhaan (Vijayendra Ghatge)." The words of that short poem we used to recite as children rings in my ears again as I see the classic Buniyaad resurrected on television. Based on the theme of Partition and its repercussions, 18 years after it was first telecast, Buniyaad is back. On Sahara One. The mega-serial, produced and directed by Sholay helmer Ramesh Sippy, was first aired in 1986. After that, it has had a couple of reruns, but this time it has been given a high-profile relaunch.

As Buniyaad continues making history on television, we take a look at the people who had become a part of our lives for a very long time. What are they doing now, almost two decades later?

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Alok Nath - Master Haveliram "Buniyaad, in many ways, laid the foundation of my career," says Nath. "On the first day of shooting, we were all very nervous. We took about nine takes and still nothing was working. Later, we came to know that this was Sippyji's way to warm up," he adds. In the serial, Haveliram goes missing. While all others think that he is dead, his wife Lajoji refuses to believe so. The whole country was hysterical. And when he returned, we realised the power of television for the first time. "This is one thing I'll never forget [the mass reaction to Haveliram's return]. And it helped me realise the need for honesty in the character that an actor must portray," he adds. Nath was later seen in serials like Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai, Tara, Imtihaan, and films like Maine Pyar Kiya, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun among others. He has mostly played a doting father. In real life, he insists he is not strict with his 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. "When I am not acting, I like to cook at home and spend time with my family. If I was not an actor, I would have been in the restaurant business," he says.

Nath is currently working in serials like Astitva - Ek Prem Kahani and Piya Ka Ghar.

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Anita Kanwar - Lajoji, Master Haveliram's wife "I enjoyed playing the character of Lajoji. Of the serials I worked in after Buniyaad, Inspector KC has been my favourite," says Kanwar. "I do not wish to be rude, but I do not want to talk to the media about anything more. Please respect my privacy," she adds. She was last seen in a detective serial, Saboot (1997-1999), later renamed Inspector KC.

Kanwar has since stopped working as an actress. She currently lives in Gurgaon, near Delhi.

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Dalip Tahil - Master Haveliram's elder son Post Buniyaad, Dalip Tahil was seen in over 100 Bollywood movies. His favourite performances have been in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Bombay Dreams in London's West End and the Indian adaptation of Webber's Evita. Tahil also owns a theatre company, Theatrix, and has a passion for singing. Currently, he is in London working on the hit soap EastEnders. He plays Dan Ferreira, the father of the Ferreira clan, who has moved to England and is raising four kids. He plays a proud man with a touch of pomposity.

And he just happens to love dressing up as Elvis Presley!

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Soni Rajdan - Sulochana, Master Haveliram's elder daughter-in-law "I played the role of Sulochana, or Lochan, as she is fondly called. She was this spicy, lovely girl married to Haveliram's elder son. Shooting those days was very hectic, and we worked about 12 to 15 hours everyday, without any days off!" says Rajdan, who is married to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Her favourite performances include Such A Long Journey, 36 Chowringee Lane, Mandi, Trikaal, Saaransh, Khamosh, Kaal Chakra, Monsoon Wedding, and Page 3. She is currently working on television projects with her own production house, Mass Productions. Aur Phir Ek Din was her first television production, and the film Nazar last year marked her directorial debut. She is planning another film soon, and is in talks with a channel to produce and direct a television series for them.

She has just finished shooting for the serial Kohinoor and stars with Kabir Bedi in an upcoming English film called Take 3 Girls.

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Kanwaljeet Singh - Satbir "My role as Satbir, Vrushbhaan's illegitimate child in Buniyaad, gave me instant recognition, after which I went on to do serials like Saans, Family No. 1, Dard and Siski," says Singh. "Rameshji [Sippy] was looking out for someone to play Roshan, later played by Mazhar Khan. Rameshji wanted me to do that role, but I wanted to play Satbir since I saw more potential in it. But he said that I needed to look younger for it. So I took a break for a month, and lost 10 kilos. That's how I bagged the role," he adds. "We were in a miniscule world of our own on the sets of Buniyaad. From morning till night, we would be shooting and our lives would revolve around that show. So many memories... I have moved on since then, but it will be unfair to narrate just a few incidents," he continues. "It was a complete learning experience and I guess all the actors who started with Buniyaad would feel the same." Most recently, Singh was seen in Aparna Sen's 15 Park Avenue. Married to actress Anuradha Patel, he has two sons, Siddharth and Aditya. And he has lots of work in hand. He is currently doing two films -- one in Punjabi -- and a television series shot in South Africa.

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Kiran Juneja - Veeravali "I played Master Haveliram's sister Veeravali who is in love with Vrushbhaan. On the sets, Ramesh Sippy and I fell in love," says Juneja. "Being a strict disciplinarian, Ramesh never encouraged any romance on the sets. But if you work so close together for a long time, I guess it's easy to fall in love," she adds. "When you see the work you did two decades ago now, it's like a mirror. There is nostalgia; a lot of memories come back." Juneja married Sippy, and post-Buniyaad, won applause for her work in Mahabharat and Junoon. She was also seen in the English serial A Mouthful Of Sky.

Currently, she is working on a Vikram Bhatt film -- called Rooh - The Spirit and set to release by May -- and a serial called Sindoor

The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Vijayendra Ghatge - Vrushbhaan "As Veerawali's love interest, Vrushbhaan, I remember two scenes were very touching," says Ghatge. "One is a romantic scene with Veerawali, and one is the scene when he feels helpless at not being able to be close to his illegitimate son Satbir, who is being brought up by Master Haveliraam as his own son," he adds. "Of the work I did after Buniyaad, I enjoyed the serials Talaash and Junoon the most, and then there were roles in movies like Jhankaar Beats and Devdas." Ghatge is currently acting in Marigold -- starring Salman Khan -- and Shaadi Se Pehle, starring Mallika Sherawat. A current affairs television show is also on the cards.
The Buniyaad folks, 18 years later

Kritika Desai - Mangla "I played the character of Mangla, married to Vrushbhaan's legitimate son Jay, played by Abhinav Chaturvedi. However, Mangla was in love with the illegitimate son Satbir. Her character is a nice combination of an independent woman who would fight against injustice but [who] is very conventional in matters of family and heart," says Desai. "Her husband is more of a businessman, while her love interest Satbir likes things she enjoys, like poetry. After marriage, she fights to keep their friendship alive in spite of her husband's discomfort. However, when Jay is fighting cancer, she stands by him," she adds. She refuses to narrate any one memorable incident, saying, "There are a lot of memories about learning, the first brush with fame in a mega serial, first financial independence... Narrating one memory will nullify all others." Kritika's other famous television stints include Chandrakanta, Noorjahan, and VJing Superhit Muqabla. Her roles in Dattak (The Adopted) and the French film Turn Left For This World won her critical acclaim.

She is currently working in serials like Tumhare Disha and Hare Kaanch Ki Chudiya. She also organises theatre workshops with Akansha, a non-governmental organisation that works with underprivileged children.

The Founding Father
Deepak Karambelkar
------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------

So phenomenal was its success that it has becomes difficult to say if Ramesh Sippy made Buniyaad or Buniyaad made Ramesh Sippy. Countless other serials have come and gone, but Buniyaad has remained forever. No one -- not even Sippy himself -- has been able to recreate the magic of his debut on television. Witness the fate of his latest project -- Gaatha -- (STAR Plus) -- which is no where near as compelling.

Sippy is quick to point out that it is still too early to say if Gaatha has been an expensive failure. Written by Buniyaad writer, Manohar Shyam Joshi, the serial is more complex. "Dealing with one family is problematic enough. With two families and the nationalistic movement as the third dimension, it is that much harder," says Sippy, adding that "television is not a medium for focussed viewing, it is one for channel surfing." Also, the serial is in a 45-minute time slot, a rare thing for a social drama. Still, Sippy is confident that Gaatha will eventually shine through as it is quality entertainment. "If Gaatha doesn't pick up sufficiently, I'll have to accept the results. The only thing I won't accept is a fall in its quality." Which he insists is better than that of Buniyaad. "Buniyaad had a free run," recalls Sippy. DD was the solo channel at that time. Sippy believes that in today's competitive environment, Buniyaad wouldn't be able to repeat its success. He says that after Buniyaad, nothing other than mythologicals have done as well or lasted through time and memory. Parikshit Sahni, star of Gaatha says all comparisons are odious, especially when the canvasses are so different. "Buniyaad had a captive audience whereas Gaatha has to fight it out," he says.

Sippy agrees that he will always have to live with the burden of having made Buniyaad and the landmark movie, Sholay. "That does weighs heavily, but there it is. It's mine, not anybody else's!" In fact, Sippy is still reaping the returns from both projects with repeat telecasts of Buniyaad and Sholay. "I have never worked with anybody for a fixed sum of money. The returns should keep coming if the programme is successful," he feels.

To be successful, the Sippy gospel advocates Quality. That was one of the reason for putting Gaatha, Kya Baat Hai and The Joneja Talk Show on STAR Plus. The sound and picture quality is superior on the satellite channel which has a "discerning audience who understands and appreciates quality." Also, being the early bird on the channel means that he gets special treatment on further project. But in the twelve years since Buniyaad, Sippy has made surprisingly few television programmes. He insists that his aim was never to become a software house and churn out material. "For me to be personally involved in any project, it will have to be more than just another show," he says. Sahni feels it a pleasure just to be associated with Sippy. "He is a complete professional and does not make anything half-baked,''he says. "Neither does he resort to pyrotechnics to get his work done -- he is always relaxed and never shouts or screams." Vijayendra Ghatge thinks Sippy is a wizard of the Indian screen, especially when it comes to putting mega-project together. "He has a passion for life. He is a great visionary and perfectionist and can draw out the nuances from an actor," says Ghatge. Kruttika Desai insists that Sippy is the shy and reserved type who takes time to open up. But when it comes to work, he never fails to deliver. "He has had the maximum impact on me. He is a man with class and commands that kind of respect," says she.

And Sippy disagrees that because of his "class", he is ill-suited to the rigours and low budgets of television. "You must understand the parameters of television, understand the limitations of time and resources. One has to balance things in such a way that quality comes through, yet the project remains affordable," he says. He admits that making serials on a huge scale can be confusing and vexing. "You are shooting episode 14, editing episode nine and 10 and giving final touches to episode five or six. Shooting backwards and forwards and backwards...!" In fact, he has installed computers on the sets of Gaatha to keep the intricate shooting details and his wits on a coherent track.

Sippy has been a star-maker. But he has rarely used stars in his projects. While he insists that he has nothing against them, in a project like Gaatha, which has over 20 characters, it's unfeasible and uneconomical to take on expensive performers. Ask him what he finds most challenging and Sippy replies directing a comedy "It requires a brilliant level of handling, performance and creativity." He also thinks that the most important element to a successful television project is a good writer, though a director who can spruce things up and keep the unit on its toes is almost as essential. "Once you say chalta hai, the downward spiral begins." But he says that he has given no Ramesh Sippy chhaap to any of his projects. "The subject commands its own kinds of takings. Why should I restrict myself when I have so many ways of doing things?" he says.

For Gaatha, he has tried to combine a period feel from the Forties with performances from the Nineties. "You have to update the drama and the performance because today's audience is watching the serial," he says. Sippy has to balance things with his camera work too. "Camera work must blend with the written work. If the camera prevails over content, there will be problems.'' Same goes for special effects and technology. "Technology should be used to enhance the contents, not baffle the audience," he insists.

For Sippy a real hit, regardless of whether it s a movie or a serial, is something that cuts across all classes and appeals to everyone. Difficult. But as Sippy knows only too well, "anything that succeeds is not easy to do."

Director Ramesh Sippy has two masterpieces to his credit. If 'Sholay' has remained timeless in the feature film genre then the popularity of 'Buniyaad' has remained unshaken in the small-screen category.

Just as this 80s serial is to be re-launched tomorrow, Sippy says, "The subject and the show have always been close to my heart. I hope that the current generation would also enjoy it in the same way as their elders did."

Rahman's whiz find: Naresh Iyer was one of the top 25 contestants on Channel [v]'s 'Super Singer'. The whiz kid caught genius composer A R Rahman's eye. Soon enough he was given the chance to sing a Tamil song 'Mayilkregey' by the maestro.

The big break has now finally come for Naresh as he sings the chart-topper 'Roohbaru' from Aamir Khan's 'Rang De Basanti'!

Buniyaad on Sahara One

Mumbai, pti:

In a move which might evoke nostalgia among television-viewers, Sahara One Television has said it will re-air Buniyaad — the hit serial of the 80's.

The channel will air director Ramesh Sippy's Buniyaad in a prime-time slot from January 26, more than 20 years after it was first telecast on Doordarshan in 1985.

"The idea is not just to evoke nostalgia among the viewers, but also to provide quality to them. The kind of serials telecast nowadays on air are less progressive than Buniyaad in terms of their story-line and even of their portrayal of women," said Purnendu Bose, chief operating officer (COO) of Sahara Television, at a launch on Thursday night.

Buniyaad, one of India's first soap operas, was based on the Partition of India and its aftermath.

SaharaOne aims to tap Gen X with 'Buniyaad'
Indiantelevision.com Team

(20 January 2006 7:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Two decades ago, in the era of a lone terrestrial channel, Doordarshan, in homes, which had one black and white television set minus the remote control, came a serial called Buniyaad.

The Ramesh Sippy directed serial, Buniyaad - meaning foundation - literally laid the foundation of a milestone in Indian television history. That was in 1986. Today 20 years later, the serial is poised to make comeback on SaharaOne from 26 January at 8 pm.

In order to create awareness around the show, the channel will be unleashing a couple of below the line (BTL) activities in TRP cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

"We will be putting up screens in cooperative housing societies in these cities where we will air the show reel of Buniyaad. We are starting with about 10 screens initially. The challenge is to take it to the ground and generate as much hype as possible around the show," said Sahara One Television COO Purnendu Bose.

Apart from this, the usual multimedia campaign comprising print, radio and cable will also be unleashed. "We are also doing some activity with cable operators wherein they too will be shown the show reel of the serial. Plus, we will also have promos on cable," he said.

Another important aspect is that the show will be promoted on the internet in order to "capture the Internet savvy generation, who are not aware what the show is all about," said Bose. Blogs, viral marketing and cross promotions on other websites will be a part of the Internet promotions around Buniyaad. Animated Buniyaad banners displayed on various portals.

A contemporary website steeped in old world charm on Buniyaad will also be launched, which will take readers down memory lane where they can read the synopsis of the serial, learn more about its cast and crew, download photographs of Buniyaad characters and also share their memories with like-hearted viewers-on the special Buniyaad blog.

Bose added, "With telenovella, game-shows being the order of the day, Buniyaad with its strong family value drama will bring back family TV viewing, that's on the decline."

In order to inform the media fraternity about the relaunch of the serial, the channel is sending out bricks (that symbolises foundation) with the Buniyaad logo on it.

SaharaOne Media and Entertainment Ltd CEO Shatanou Aditya said, "Re-launching Buniyaad, is SaharaOne's way of acknowledging this soap as a benchmark in the history of Indian television. And we hope that it will recreate the same magic it did during its last run on television."

Sippy said, "It is a great to have Buniyaad back on television. The subject and the show have always been very close to my heart. And I hope that the current generation would also enjoy it the same way as the elders."

Buniyaad premiered in 1986 on Doordarshan and the 54 episodes show ran for a year. The cast included Alok Nath, Kiran Juneja, Kanwaljeet, Kulbhushan Kharbhanda, Abhinav Chaturvedi, Kruttika Desai amongst others.

Back to Buniyaad
Screen On & Off

Buniyaad is back, not bigger but certainly brighter. Twenty years after the first modern Indian family soap went off the Doordarshan beam, it will return to Sahara on Republic Day in a glossier, colour-corrected avatar.

"The serial had created history at that time. It ran for 105 weeks at a stretch from 1984 to 1986. In fact, it is the Sholay of Indian television. But barely 25 to 30 per cent of today's viewers have seen it," says Purnendu Bose, Sahara One Television COO, explaining the reason for its revival.

The connection is not far-fetched. Buniyaad came from the Sippy stable, the makers of Sholay. "The content is fabulous. It had the top writers, editors and cameramen of the time," says Deepti Bhatnagar, who has acquired the telecast rights from G.P. Sippy's grandson Sasha.

Alok Nath, the adorable Masterji, explains the phenomenon that the Partition drama was. "Television was in its infancy then and for the middle class, Doordarshan was the cheapest form of entertainment. When Hum Log came, closely followed by Buniyaad, people were exposed to a new genre — soap opera. Most could identify with the trauma of Partition. We did so much research on the location, the dialect and the mannerisms to get everything right. So much effort is hardly put into a project these days."

The success was stunning. "Even the minor actors in Buniyaad were recognised all over the country in those days," recalls actor Kanwaljit Singh. "On Tuesdays and Saturdays, when the show came on air there would be curfew on the streets," laughs Alok Nath, who has acted in numerous mega ventures on the big and small screens since, but for whom his "top role" remains Masterji. "Buniyaad made me what I am," he confesses.

There have been earlier instances of Doordarshan shows returning on satellite channels. Shaktimaan, for instance, staged a comeback on Pogo last year but after considerable editing, changes in background scores and addition of special effects for a faster-paced story to suit GeneratioNext.

But Buniyaad is Buniyaad. "It is such a beautiful story and so well-told. In fact, our editor was complaining that he did not have any work on it," laughs Bhatnagar.

The fact that it is a period drama also justifies keeping the look and feel completely unchanged, she adds. "Buniyaad was rooted in values which we have left behind in the rat race. It had a soul," adds Bose.

The editing being done is all of four minutes per episode to accommodate commercial breaks, and even chopping that much is tough. What is being done, though, is a frame-by-frame colour correction on Smoke. "Such top-of-line edit machines were not available then. And technical finesse is so essential on satellite television that we have to add gloss and effects, manually correct make-up and ensure uniform voice level," says Bhatnagar.

Buniyaad gets ready to roll again from January 26 at 8 pm on Sahara One.
