Some of you must have jumped right in her with your strong NO or YES. Some of you must be wondering, oh God have we not gone over this so many times before. Some of you must be rolling your eyes "Not another parasite" discussion. Thats too mundane and old. I thought we ought to have a debate with a twist. So for a change this is nothing about Roe vs Wade and such.

The case in question this time is Rosemary vs Baby

For those of you who do not know about Rosemary vs Baby. Here is the background.

Rosemary is an ordinary housewife. One the night her and her husband plan to conceiver, her kind neighbors give her chocolate mousse and Rosemary has a dizzy spell and faints. In her unconscious state she has a bizarre dream of being raped by a demon force. A few weeks later she is pregnant. Her pregnancy is painful and she craves things like raw meat, blood etc. Rosemary discovers that her neighbors are part of a Satanic cult. The neighborhood is part of this cult and they are preparing for the arrival of a demonic child - possibly the Anti-Christ. Things are strange and Rosemary find herself in the midst of Satanic rituals and dark practices.

Lets think about Rosemary and all the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy. In the case of Rosemary vs Baby - should Rosemary abort her child or should she go ahead and give birth?

Yes. But can she? Would the coven let her do that?
Another point - assuming this happened in real life and that she was raped by a human instead of a demonic force --- the woman should have a right to terminate the pregnancy if it brings back horrific memories. It is not like she got pregnant because she got careless.
Rest later. Let us see how this debate shapes up. Why don't you take the pro-life stand here for a change, Sarina. It would be fun debating with you.

She shouldn't abort the child, for sure. In my eye, even if it's a vampire . . it's a new life . . in process of grouping right inside that woman . . she can't kill it anyway.

This new "life" would leash horror on the world and mankind. How about all those lives this new "life" will definitely take in future? How about the lives that have already been taken to protect this "new life"?

The kid that she has would make her feel that it is really a devil's child. If that is a feeling she carries for her child isnt it better that she just doesnt have that baby?
She will have an opportunity (to get herself mentally treated and then) have a child who she doesnt think is a devil's child. Maybe that Child would get a better upbringing.
So I say go ahead and ABORT

No, she should not abort the child for two reasons ...

1) If she believes in the coming of an Antichrist, then she must know that the religious text warns mankind of the coming of the Antichrist. Not only do scriptures (of several religions) mention the coming of an Antichrist, they also describe how Jesus himself will return and defeat the Antichrist himself. This is something that the scriptures have already forewarned believers about, the coming of the Antichrist is impending, whether or not Rosemary gives birth to this child. In fact, by giving birth to the Antichrist, Rosemary will be able to spread awareness about her and prevent others from believing in his claims of divinity.

2) If she does not believe in the coming of an Antichrist, then this is all bull and she should continue her pregnancy and bring that child into this world.

Okay, let us assume for a second that the Antichrist part is true, which makes the Jesus' returning to this world true --- still, how do you justify a woman used as a mere incubator against her wishes to carry on a task that she never ever thought about accomplishing? Are there any justifications for a career conscious husband to literally sell his wife to Satan? Why should the wife be treated as a second grade citizen and not given the right to have a say in continuing with the pregnancy or aborting?

2) If she does not believe in the coming of an Antichrist, then this is all bull and she should continue her pregnancy and bring that child into this world.

Even when she suspects she was raped? Let's assume the demonic force angle is BS --- the fact that she was sold by her husband to the neighbors still remains the fact. Why should she continue with a pregnancy when she is forced into it without her consent? Why should any woman continue with such a pregnancy?

Even if the hazy memory of rape turns out to be figment of Rosemary's imagination and the cravings for raw meat and chicken turns out to be the result of a disturbed mind and paranoia due to raging hormones during pregnancy, I would still suggest she aborts the baby because the pregnancy is clearly too much for her to take resulting in a risk to her own life.

Irrespective of which scenario you want to go on with, the fact remains that Rosemary has been treated like dirt by her husband and the people around her. She is intimidated, frightened and both physically and emotionally abused. She is not in the right frame of mind and she is dead scared of what is growing inside her.

At times, even if babies are conceived with love and planning, an abortion is necessary to save the emotional and/or physical health of the mom. Why should Rosemary be deprived of this choice?

@ Sarina - I have neither read the book nor seen the movie. I am planning on getting this book tomorrow. Have you read Damien Omen books? Rosemary's sounds similar to Omen.

If the child is going to be another Osama or Bush or Hitler then it should be aborted. But problem is the Devil will be manipulating events so it will not be an easy task. But no matter what it would be a fun movie to watch like Damien in the movie Omen.
