Anyways, yet another "my kind" of songs. Melodious, simple score and equally good, absolutely clean voices of both Sujata Bhattarcharya and Udit Narayan. Sujata's voice sounds just too good and her talent is used to the fullest in this track.
Don't you mean Madhushree and not Sujata? đ
Last year, Madhushree and âď¸Udit Narayanâď¸ (aaah.... đ) had two deuts together, each of which featured in a maha-flop film.
There was 'Sau Janam' from What's Your Rashee? and 'Yaar Mila Tha' from Blue. So before I review Sau Janam, let's all have a listen to Yaar Mila Tha, and get a preview of the Udit-Madhushree chemistry!

Yeah I admit I played that just to listen to Udit again. đł Back to 'Sau Janam' now...
I don't think Madhushree sounds like Alka - she has a very different way of pronouncing lyrics and she has a different voice qaulity, too. Madhushree's voice
does famously resemble Sadhana Sargam's voice, though. Sadhanaji is one of the illustrious disciples of Pandit Jasraj and Madhushree has a similar mastery of
sur.
In this song, for example, Madhushree has beautiful standing notes. Especially holding the notes on a closed mouth sound like 'janammmm' without much vibrato - now that's riyaaz! However, as the song goes on, she does start shaking on the same 'sau janammmm lenge hummmm' because she clearly doesn't have the same stamina that she had to sing the first line.
Her voice is magical - it's so clean and perfect for the mike. However her voice thins considerably at high notes. Which is no good since this song employs a the taar saptak (higher octave) a lot.
Overall, a simple composition, but with difficult singing. Madhushree has definitely added a lot to the song through her voice and technique.
However she ought to have taken tips from her awesome co-singer on how to emote. She seems to be smiling throughout the song, mannequine-like. When Udit comes into the picture, he treats each word with so much attention, affording it the right tone of voice to bring out the full meaning of the song. Just compare the way he sings his lines "Har doori ko hum mita ke mil gaye" to the way she sings her lines - there is a lack of layering and complexity in her voice. And he handles his high notes better than her, too.
For me, this is a 6.75 performance. I'll round that up to 7/10!
PS: Narayan Narayan!
