I think that initially you should not give out any personal details. When we all first come here, we have this very trusting view of the world, think everyone online is genuine and sincere. Which of course, isn't always true. It doesn't even matter who you're giving out information too, if you feel uncomfortable you shouldn't. And they shouldn't push you too as well. If they are, a red flag inside your head should immediately go off. Giving out names/location isn't such a big deal ... but now we have things like facebook and other networking sites where people can easily locate others. I don't know about you, but my FB profile contains way too much personal information. Don't want them to have my cell phone number!

It is possible to be friends in the virtual world without knowing everyone's complete personal history. Of course friendship is a two way road, you respect their space and they'll respect your's. But along the way, I think you'll also make friends who are trustworthy enough for you to share information with, you'll develop a strong bond, and you might want to share something. You should remain open to that idea as well. In the end, use your common sense and don't let others compel you into doing something you don't want to do ... of course that applies anywhere.
