TV stars raise 50 lakh for tsunami relief
On April 10, Sony TV will air the show Tsunami Rehabilitation and You, (TRU), where around 80 TV stars raised funds for tsunami relief.
The Indian Television Association-organised show was spearheaded by Shashi Ranjan, Smriti Irani, Ronit Roy, Ashok Pandit, etc.
Says JVPD resident Ashok Pandit, "This is the first time the industry came together for such an event." He adds, "The energy and enthusiasm of participants was encouraging." The show raised approximately Rs 50 lakh.
Besides item numbers by TV actresses, the show featured a comedy based on the sting operation on Shakti Kapoor and Aman Verma. "Ronit Roy played Aman Verma and Tanaaz Currim the journalist. It went down well with audiences," reveals Pandit.
The organisers will use the money for rehabilitation efforts in Tamil Nadu. Says Lokhandwala resident Ronit Roy, "We plan to adopt Nagapattnam village. Six people will visit the village, followed by another group in a few months." The first group will consist of Prem Krishen, Ronit Roy, Rakesh Bedi, Smriti Irani and Ashok Pandit.
"We will meet the Collector, list priorities and monitor every penny spent," says Pandit, adding, "We will involve stars from the south to help us bridge the language gap."
Adds Lokhandwala resident Smriti Irani, "The first team will leave on April 9. We will organise another fundraiser in four to five months."
