Shaan talks career and more

Shaan, whom we have seen as a singer, a host and now a judge, is happily managing his career. He is not sad about his career graph, he enjoys the vacations but it doesn't mean that he has no work. He is singing songs or composes. We talk to Shaan about his career.
So where do you see yourself today? Do you foresee reverse shift music towards proper playback singers in music?
I can't really say one way or the other. There are some good songs happening, like in Sajid-Wajid's Jaane Kaha Se Aayi Hai and a film starring Govinda and Tusshar Kapoor. I have sung a nice masti bhara song for Rahman in 1-800 Love. I have not been that busy but I am sort of comfortable because we singers are getting good songs too.
Seems like Shreya and your voice clicks a lot together. What do you think?
Yeah, I guess so, which is a change from my earlier lot that were mostly the fast-paced fusion numbers. Sadly, melodious songs are not promoted as much as the fast numbers today, but the happy part is that you cannot keep a good song down, and sooner or later it crops up and lives on.

So how will you describe your work today?
Yes, times are changing. Experimentation is in- like long mukhdas with chorus rather than the conventional mukha-antara structure, which is fine once in a way. I am not too busy but have managed to afloat despite the erratic trends for 10 years I have enjoyed life, vacationed enough, done my albums and shows and sung so many hits with every established and hit composer.
Today we hear more of English or foreign language lyrics. So what do you have to say about it? Are the lyrics are changing today?
On reflection, yes, I agree with you that it is more about newness and smart word-play rather than actual improvement or more substance. But I guess every song has its taste and it's according to the film demand.
How much has this affected you personally?
For me, it's a nice, relaxed phase - and I am still recording something every day. A lot of my work is with new and nameless music directors and for me that translates as a lot more space and freedom, as they are very receptive to my inputs about lyrics and music.
We have heard from many composers that you play an important role in recording as you give creative inputs to your songs.
I think that a singer must offer his honest inputs in a positive way. For one, I have to keep myself fresh and non-repetitious. For another, once a song is done, it's done, so if I can suggest improvement to any specific aspect, why shouldn't I do so before the song takes shape for posterity?
What about the Shaan-Sagarika jodi?
We are busy with our own individual commitments, but we have now got together for an album in Bengali, revisiting compositions of our father Manas Mukherjee. If it works well, we will do it in Hindi as well. Music companies seem a bit reluctant to buy the brother-sister act. They want soulful ballads, and can you imagine a bhai-behen duo crooning romantic numbers to each other?
What is a typical Shaan off day like?
Every day is different! There are some days when you wish you had enough time, while some others are totally relaxed. On a free day, I would just laze around and sleep a lot. I also watch a lot of television. I am not much of a reader, though!
