Dance India Dance has three judges, but Remo D'Souza is arguably most popular. He's liked for his cool nature, and his lack of attitude. Perhaps it's the result of having to struggle his way up the success ladder. He began in 1995 with Rangeela and today is one of Bollywood's established choreographers. We caught up with him to know more about him. He recently hurt his leg and we asked him first about that.

How's your leg and how helpful has the unit been?
I am doing fine and the unit members and co-judges are very helpful, Geeta takes care of me as a mother would, as you know everyone calls her Geeta Ma.

Tell us about your journey from Gujarat to Mumbai…
The journey was full of obstacles. When I came to Mumbai I had no income however I was lucky to be staying with a very generous family. The journey was very tough however the will to achieve my dreams was stronger than the obstacles and I got my first break in RGV's Rangeela.

Your days of struggle in Mumbai... what were they like?
I opened my dance class called Super Brats, which had three branches. I used to travel to one in the morning, take the class there, come to a second for the class and then catch the train to the last class before I could go home. Initially I had four students but gradually the number increased. Income was supplemented through these dance classes but the demand for such dance classes fluctuated with the monsoon season being the worst time of the year. At one point I had literally no money; not even to pay my rent. Once, for two days, I stayed at Bandra station with no food to eat.

Tell us about your break.
It was at a dance competition where my team came first. Ahmed Khan was working on Ram Gopal Varma's Rangeela and was on the look out for fresh faces. He auditioned me and i got selected. At the beginning i was rejected because of my dark complexion and unattractive features, whereas Ahmed wanted fair complexioned males. But luckily Ahmed's assistant knew about my dancing skills and insisted that I be taken.

Unlike singers dancers don't get much fame, so is it a good idea to become a choreographer?
Choreographers get more fame when doing a reality show, but there are good platforms today.

What is the future of Remo, the choreographer and Remo, the human being?
As an choreographer in future Remo will be directing musical and commercial movies to entertain people and as a human being, in future Remo will be the same as he is now.

When people have seen that kind of struggle, they understand the worth of success! I really like him!

I wonder why he didn't want to comment on Geeta or Terence though. Surely didn't want to create unnecessary drama! 😆 With these media people, one never knows!
