Tv actor: dilip joshi

Better late than never...

He started as a child artist in Gujarati theatre and moved to TV when satellite channels came in. Serials like Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, Hum Sab Ek Hain and Kya Baat Hai followed. Hindi films were the obvious next step for Dilip Joshi and he played character roles in films like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, What's Your Rashee?, among others.

"I did about 14-15 films," says Dilip. "But there was no creative satisfaction in playing the hero's sidekick or just another character who was more like furniture." He returned to TV.

And to Tarak Mehta Ka Ulta Chashma on Sab. Though Dilip has been on TV for more than two decades, it is only now, with this comedy show, that he's finally getting his due. His performance is earning him great reviews and plenty of awards. But Dilip modestly gives most of the credit to Gujarati playwright Tarak Mehta, who created the character that he plays.

He finds being judged the Next Big Thing a little "funny" but he couldn't be happier. "It's great to know that after all these years people still have high expectations of you. I feel my time is just starting."

Tv actress: ratan rajput

From Patna with love
She wasn't interested in academics at all. Actually, all she wanted to do was to get married – quickly. So Patna girl Ratan Rajput quit school after Class VII. It was only when her parents told the youngest of their six children that an education was necessary to get a good husband, that Ratan agreed to finish her graduation. "To get married was my biggest thrill. It was a childhood dream. It still is. So I did whatever my parents told me in the name of marriage," laughs Ratan.

But since her parents thought she was too young to be married off, Ratan decided to join her sister in Delhi just to "pass time."

"I was always very sure about what I didn't want to do – like academics – but I didn't know what I wanted to do," says Ratan. "So I just came to Delhi with my sister. I tried doing various things. From joining Kathak classes to trying my hand at theatre, I did it all. I joined acting classes with Surendra Sharma and did theatre for about three years."
Then, Ratan thought it was time to move on. She decided to visit Mumbai. Luck was on her side. She went to a TV production house looking for work and got chosen to play one of the leads in Radha Ki Betiyaan.

And then came Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo on Zee which brought Ratan firmly into the spotlight. Rave reviews and awards followed. "Perhaps being from Bihar, I look and sound convincing as Lali in Agle Janam... And I'm happy that people have liked me. I hope the good luck continues," she grins.
