Let us give the Devil enough air time too. I am sure he has been most misunderstood as someone wrote.

The Devil is misunderstood

Hail Satan!

Now that I have your attention, I assure everyone there were no humans or animals sacrificed in the writing of this column. I have never worshipped the Devil and do not plan on being involved in any occult practices this Halloween. This may be surprising, but none of my friends who actually are part of the Church of Satan worship the deity nor believe him to be a physical being. Many people are misguided about what Satanism really is as a religion and philosophy.

Anton LaVey created the Church of Satan in 1966. According to his book, The Satanic Bible, LaVey and his followers refer to Satan only as representing "a force of nature." Satanism really is a religion that is the worship of one's self and when a follower says "Hail Satan" what they mean is simply "Hail me."

LaVey's followers have a list of nine things Satan represents ("The Nine Satanic Statements") such as "Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it" and "vengeance instead of turning the other cheek." The religion also follows LaVey's idea of the "Eleven Satanic Rules of the Earth," ideas such as "when walking in open territory, bother no one. If someone bothers you, ask him to stop. If he does not stop, destroy him."

Not too illogical or scary is it?

Perhaps one of the more interesting things The Satanic Bible discusses (Satanists do not believe in preaching) is "The Nine Satanic Sins." The sins are not 'thou shall nots' but rather rail against flaws such as Stupidity, Pretentiousness and Herd Conformity.

Again, the ideas and philosophy are really not anything overwhelming or frightening - so why do people still fear and misjudge Satanists?

LaVey could easily have called his religion something far less sinister like Rainbows-and-puppyism or maybe Selfishism. Who would have paid attention to him though? Using such a confrontational name for his system of beliefs created more publicity for him and, thus, allowed him to gain more members at a faster rate. Sadly, naming his religion after the Fallen Angel from the Christian Bible might have gained the public's attention, but it also vilified it. Many people still associate his church with the Devil, child molestation and human or animal sacrifice.

According to the church's Web site, members of the church can be thrown out for malicious or seriously violent behavior toward another person.

The funny thing is that Satanists associated with the Church of Satan condemn actual Devil worshipping because it goes against the beliefs of their church - the worshipping of the individual instead of a supernatural deity.

There is no need to think a Satanist is a sinister person involved with blood orgies like the Satanic animals in the "South Park" episode "The Woodland Critter Christmas." While I follow a mainstream religion myself, Satanism is simply an alternative "left-hand path" religion that has been vilified by its name and by major religions of the world that misunderstand what the Church of Satan stands for.

Well it does seem that the Devil is a nice guy having to do the dirty work; like clearing up all the mess and punishing people to teach proper behaviour. God and Devil could be like light and darkness, the obverse and reverse of the same coin. 😊

If you ask me, they are. Everything has a balance point in life, without the other side, the former one would cease to exist. Somehow, that's just what I feel. If there's a God, there's bound to be an opposite to it of equal strength, and I don't mean about the physical aspect of it.

Edit: And you'll forgive me, I just read this bit, and not the whole post, so apologies if my post went haywire. I am just feeling so sleepy with the SAT papers Summer bhaiya that I really really am feeling lazy to analyse all that bit. Later on I'll do it! Pakka! 😃

Sneha Bahen you are right. Death is another vesture of the same God that gives life too.

The Devil generally refers to someone who is anti-God, a representative of all things bad and evil. If you perceive the devil as an entity that is merely the opposite of good, something that is inherently evil then - it is not misunderstood. The world is just divided into good and evil.

However, Satan or Satanist cults are often misunderstood. Satan is not necessarily evil, but just an antagonist or an adversary to God. He is not exactly evil, but challenges the authority and power of God. Satan questions the philosophy of moral concepts and questions why a person should heed to God.

Satanist cults are actually not necessarily evil doers. The stories of blood sacrifice and creepy occultic activity are rumors. Basically Satanism questions authoritarianism of religion and concept of God and is sort of free will and knowledge religion. There are whacked out Satanist cults just like how there are whacked out worshipers of God.

Actually, I always kind of felt for Lucifer the fallen archangel. He was just someone who wanted more power and authority. He just questioned why could he not rise higher and why God was permanently unquestionably and irrevocably on top. One has to question God too, it seems as if he is on a massive ego trip. I created the world hence all the world shall yield to me. I show compassion and love only if you submit to me, to those who question me - I show jealousy and wrath. Does not seem like a lovable guy or great leader - who does not believe in teamwork or even sharing roundtable authority. (PS: This is based only on the parable of Lucifer. Of course we can argue the concept of God in general).

It is kind of crazy - there are people out there who are like herded sheep. Unable to think or act on their own. Whenever someone swims against the tide, questions authority, challenges religion and its leaders, has a more liberal take on morality - people automatically call them devil worshippers or anti-christs - even if they are good people. I love the conspiracy theories on how Obama is the anti-christ. Actually I take evil pleasure in pointing out how eerily similar Obama is to Nicolae Carpathia. The mind of a human especially WASP Americans is so malleable that it is fun to mess with it like Playdoh. I heart Nicolae Carpathia.

Yes worshippers of Kali and sometimes Siva too could be interpreted as being worshippers of the devil.
Siva is also called the destroyer and the dance of Siva represents the destruction of the universe and involution.
To some extend there is also a great misunderstanding here.
Siva the renunciate normally adorned and covered by ashes, this is just an imagery created by the sages.

Shiva and Kali are as much part of our Gods as Vishnu and Brahma. They are definitely not amongst the fallen angels or archangels. Shiva happens to be the third part of the trinity that keeps the loops going - creator - Brahma, sustainer - Vishnu, destryor - Shiva. Nothing is eternal. If it gets created - it will be destroyed when time comes. This simple rule of universe makes Shiva's role as important as Brahma's or Vishnu's.
Your rationale is absolutely misplaced here. I don't think the Church of Satan desciples could be compared to Shiva.
