I think I said it before but I am not sure how KJo's films work for NRIs. Not being one I really don't have a solid explanation for it. His films, though, are also targeted at Indian in India. Because they are after all the biggest part of the audience. No Bollywood film would be very successful, if it wasn't sort of successful in India. And I think that is one of the reasons he keeps the accent out. The other being that it saves them money/time on coaching actors for the accents. Not sure how accurate my guesses are though.

I think we are sort of arguing the same point. Slumdog Millionaire, as it was directed at an international audience, needed to be in English. Le Scaphandre et Le Papillon is directed mostly at French audiences and I guess festival circuits since it was popular there. Every film will have to change certain things to make them practically viable. For Slumdog Millionaire it is dialogues being written in English (and no, no one would be able to pick up the English those characters spoke off the streets or by hanging around the Taj Mahal). For KJo's films that apparently means not having British/American accents for British/American characters.

Julian Schnabel and Le Scaphandre et Le Papillon is definitely an exception and I agree the film isn't as popular because it is in French. That is what I was trying to point out. Had he decided to leave the French aside and have his character speak in English but with a French accent (ala Pink Panther perhaps 🤔) then it might have also reached a wider audience. But it wouldn't be authentic.

Slumdog Millionaire is definitely not the first film that has done that. City of Joy and Gandhi are some others. Another example would be films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na or Wake Up Sid or even Dil Chahta Hai, where the characters speak primarily in Hindi, but it is more than likely that people from a similar background would have conversed in English with each other more often than not. But they sacrifice a little bit of that authenticity so the film is watched by more people.

I think the motivation for making these decisions in all these cases is pretty much the same and in that way Bollywood films are not all that different from American or British films. That ofcourse doesn't say much about the quality of the product in totality.

This is sort of an odd-coincidence but Julian Schnabel's next film is Miral. The one Freida Pinto was shooting for in Israel.

Hiru, here is a short post for you!

Hiru its a new film. Julian Schnabel is a director and he made a French film called Le Scaphandre et Le Papillon. Now he is making a new film called Miral which has Freida Pinto in the title role.
