It might sound strange coming from one of Indian cinema's finest actors, but after working in films for over three decades, Naseeruddin Shah has
Naseeruddin Shah
finally admitted that acting in films is a very boring job.

"Yes I'm not enjoying acting in films. That's why I've not done any films this year. Film acting is a very boring job. In fact, it's the most boring job in the world. And if there wasn't so much money in it, no one would do it," says Naseer. It's theatre that he is occupying himself with these days. "I wanted to take a break from films. So this year I've only been doing theatre. That's why there's just one film of mine that's going to release and that's Ishqiya. Also, I've been teaching. No, I'm no longer associated with Subhash Ghai's acting institute. But I work with my own group of theatre actors... actors who work with us in our plays. I do a lot of workshops with them or with any student-actor who wants to participate," informs Naseer.

And the National Award-winning actor is impressed with some of the young film-makers of the industry, "who are doing a great job kyunki woh paise banane ke neeyat se filmein nahin bana rahe hain. Film-makers like Neeraj Pandey, Rajat Kapoor and Rituparno Ghosh are in that league." Talking about Khuda Ke Liye, a Pakistani film that he did, the actor says, "Though my work was for just two days in the film, I liked it very much. It's one of the most important films of my life. In fact, I'll rate it at the top in terms of significance because the message that is given through the film, was very necessary. Also it was very gutsy to make such a film in Pakistani cinema."

About the 'changing face of Indian cinema', Shah says, "Nothing's changing. It's the same rubbish that we have been making for the last 100 years and will continue to make..."Ask him why he joined films and he says bluntly, "Main koi kala karne ke liye filmon mein nahin aaya tha. Aur jo bhi actor banta hai woh kala ki sewa ke iraade se nahin banta. Woh actor banta hai kyunki woh mashhoor aur ameer hona chahta hai, woh chahta hai log usko pasand karen, usko dekhen. Jo actor ye daava karta hai ki main kala ki sewa karne ke liye actor bana hoon, woh jhooth bol raha hai. Main actor isliye nahin bana tha ki main meaningful cinema mein kaam karun, ya main kahaniyon ka manchan karun, main actor bana tha kyunki main mashhoor hona chahta tha."

The versatile actor doesn't think too much about work either. "I don't dream that I want to do this role or that role. I think an actor's job is to convey the writer's message to the audience, no matter what his or her role is," says he.

The part in bold is brutally honest. I am really looking forward to Ishqiya.

Naseer Saab's interviews are the best. They are so candid, and I really like the fact that he does not ever mince words. Very refreshing for that reason alone. Regardless of kala or why one does what they does, I am extremely happy he chooses to do what is interesting to him.

He should act more in films because he can act. One of the best interviews I've read.

Rarely do we ever get to read honest interviews in Bollywood anymore, and this is an exception. For an odd reason, I could relate to the interview and it felt he said what he thought, rather than sugarcoating his words to appear generous. Yes, he could have stated in a diplomatic way that he enjoys cinema as a form of art, and thus does them, but he downright said that he became an actor because he wanted to be 'mashoor.'

Seriously, the actors that we have in Bollywood right now (most of them, I wouldn't even call actors), are in it to for fame and name, period. They come in, do their jobs, get paid excessively, face the limelight, and leave. It makes me wonder how many would actually still be in the business if it wasn't for the money, and if someone still happens to be in it, then they indeed are in it for 'kalaa.'

Another part of the interview that I fully agreed with was that how Indian Cinema has not progressed an inch in the past 100 years or so. We still dig up the same concepts and create films with the same subjects that rarely do ever make any difference. 'Khuda Ke Liye' wasn't innovative, but it certainly carried an essential message, and as he said it was an achievement to have it made in Pakistan cinema.

I am looking forward to Ishqiya and if anything, the movie seems to be sane among the lunatic ones that we are being exposed to in the recent times. Oh, and not that it matters, but I find Naseer saab to be extremely dashing.

Awesome to read his crystal clear views, no word mincing, no trying to impress anyone. He has had so much experience in Bollywood and knows exactlly how things operate, lik his honset opinions.

What are some films

Where you were rooting for the pairing of the lead actor/actress with the second lead/side character instead of with the main one?
