Like he said "Ishq Bina" was inspired by Starry Starry night but I've heard both the songs... only a few (2-3) notes are similar.

But some of the songs which he has compiled are exact copies too. While some songs are partially copied like Chake de.

Thank you very much for the links!

It is very interesting to look at the "lifts." I don't think lift is the right word for all of these songs, as most of them on the site seem to be inspirations with improvisation. Listen to Chura Liya Hai Tumne in Panchamda's section and listen to the original song. You see some resemblance, but can't call it a lift.

A "lift" is "Pretty Woman" sorry to say!

Lift karade! Life karade! BUMP karade!!!! šŸ˜†

Hello guys long long back mdroy & I wrote Inspiration Vs copying....

Do you remember the dhun played by Amitabh Bachhan on mouth organ in SHOLAY when he used to look at Jaya Bhaduri? Do you know these very notes were used to make song 'Aane wala pal jane wala hai' (Golmaal: RD Burman, ), now compare that song with opening notes of Yaro sun lo dil ki (Rok sako to rok lo: Jatin Lalit), do they sound similar?.... because they are all based on raag Kirvani.
we all agree that there is nothihg wrong in rag based compositions but that does not mean that they are copies at all though they may sound similar.
there are a finite # of factors which influence a MD when he/she is
composing a song.
1. his own knowledge and exposure to different kinds of music,
2.public taste
3.the demands of the filmmaker.
So for example HR is a young guy in his early 30's so he has been exposed to a whole body of Hindi music (SDB, RDB, LP, OP, etc...) not to mention western music and of course Pakistani and Arabic music.
So naturally, these influences will show up at various times in his music. I think that sometimes a composer does not even realize where his inspiration is coming from when he is writing music. Now with the internet, it is easy for people to root these things out. But
in the old days when a song seemed heavily influenced by a genre, I don't know if there was such protest. I know that a lot of Bengali composers were influenced by Tagore as well as baul music. Sometimes old Tamil songs sounded like Salil chowdhury songs or maybe vice versa.

I would love to know of what other members think in this regard: how do you define plagiariam, raaga & folk song based influence so on.

well looking at the viewer ship , it deserves another GTFP..

i want to know one more things from you.How do you rate Anau Malik as a MD. Well it is a well know fact that he copies like any thing but again if you look at few of his compostions..

1. Imtihan
2. Kareeb
3. Phir teri Kahani yaad aaye.
4. Border
5. Josh
6. few more..

i am not sure whether they have been copied but i really loved them..i sometimes get confused if he can producs such good compositions, then why does he copy so much....any comments..please enlighten me as all of them are copied or they were original

Wow, Swastika, what an interesting website...thanks for sharing.

Growing up, I knew some songs were partially copied from ABBA songs (like Mama-mia vs Mil Gayaa), but I am surprised, that there was SO much of this going on in the 70s. In the late 80's and early 90's there were atleast three songs with the 'It's the Final Countdown' music. I was a little disappionted when I realized ARR was also guilty of this (part of deep forest).

But why is copying part of the song acceptable, but not the whole song? Would this be acceptable in other musical cultures? Does it happen in other cultures?

I guess the MDs do it for the audiences...to suit their tastes.

If I don't know the orig song though, I do enjoy the copied song.
