Do out-of-hours services need improving?

NHS trusts in England must monitor out-of-hours GP care more closely, says a watchdog. Do you agree?

Most GPs opted out of providing cover at nights and weekends in 2004 and since then primary care trusts have been in charge of providing such care, often relying on private firms working under NHS contracts.

The Care Quality Commission says that trusts are failing to properly monitor the quality of care provided and that variations in monitoring standards between trusts point to a nationwide problem.

What is the out-of-hours service like in your area? Have you had good or bad experiences as an out-of-hours patient? Are you a doctor providing out-of-hours service?

You have out of hours service. Lucky you. I'm lucky to get regular hours service. I busted my knee. Looks like I will be paying for it through 2010. 😆
