Space and more

Optimum utilisation of space is a must in Mumbai and the Tonks have taken that up quite seriously in their beautiful new home

Gauri and Yash Tonk along with their five-year-old daughter Pari, moved into their new house at Jogeshwari in May this year. The Tonks have been television stars since long and in September Yash's movie 'Main aur Mrs Khanna' is due for release.

Their duplex home on the seventh and the eighth floor of the 23-storied tower exudes warmth, homeliness and a certain amount of chic simplicity that draws you.

As you enter the house, the evening sun streaming in from the huge windows of the living room and the wooden staircase leading to the second floor takes up your attention. A massive mirror in an eye-catching silver frame that helps to almost double the natural light inside the room, makes the house look very welcoming.

Yash, happy with the compliments about his new home says, "I have always wanted my home to have an inviting and comfortable feel to it and not be like a beautiful but austere and formal hotel suite."

The Tonk home has been designed by Viveak Popli with ample help from Gauri Tonnk. "My wife Gauri is the one who has been at it. She is the one responsible for my beautiful home," says the devoted husband Yash.

The Tonks had bought the skeleton of the duplex apartment and then they worked to turn it into their dram home. "I was very particular about what I wanted in my house and was ready with all the exact shades of the marble for the floor of my house, paper cuttings of the kind of furniture I wanted, colours and hues of all the laminates and tiles I wanted in the house," smiles pretty Gauri. The kind of single minded dedication she has for her house is evident from the look her house has.

Predominantly light beige, and various shades of brown, the interiors of the Tonk home is all about optimum utilisation of space. "In Mumbai space is precious and in the 1,400 sq ft carpet area of my house I wanted everything, yet no clutter. My furniture, wall panels, floating bed, walk-in-wardrobe and everything else is made in such a way that I have lots of storage space. All the sofas in my house are sofa-cum-beds so that my guests are always comfortable. The sofa in my hall has wide back support that doubles up as a place to sit on when we party," says Gauri.

Large etched glass sliding walls divide the living room into a simple guest room and hall. The living room is rigged up with a massive LCD screen and home theatre system, that reflects in the mirror on the opposite wall.

Yash has a mini bar tucked away in one corner of the hall. "This is my area. This rectangular wall-hanging at the bar has been with me for years," explains Yash pointing out the quaint yet attractive wall hanging with Chinese inscription. "It spells luck I think," he adds.

The opposite corner has a glass-topped dining table with a sofa on one side and three chairs on the other. Overhead lights lend a very warm and cosy feel to the unusually tiny dining area. "My architect had commented that this area wouldn't accommodate a dining table but I was sure of what I wanted," says Gauri. She has always been interested in interior designing and her voracious reading on the subject has lent her vision the creativity it needed.

A wooden staircase leads up to the second floor of the house that houses a mini puja area, three bedrooms, a walk-in-wardrobe and two toilets. The guest bedroom and the master bedroom is again done up in the same colours as the floor below. Their daughter, Pari's bedroom is like a doll-house, done up in pink and ivory.

"I didn't want our house to be too colourful. It becomes intimidating and overwhelms people," says Yash. Gauri adds, "I have used definite colours like this chandelier I picked up at a nearby store but otherwise my house has a calm and muted look."

The guest bathroom has tiles on the floor that give it a wooden feel. The dull gold and dark brown colours of the guest bathroom on the first floor, looks very appealing and rich. The kid's bathroom is pretty with a complete kiddie theme to it. The master bedroom is silver and white. "I found these beautiful silver tiles and bought a batch for the master bathroom," says Gauri. The tiles have dancers etched on it and one entire wall of the bathroom is covered with it. These light reflective tiles make the bathroom look spacious.

The Tonks are a simple, warm and friendly couple and the way they have done up their house reflects that.
