Overall, I am disappointed with both the girls and guys galas. Barring a few great performances, most of the contestants were mediocre. I hope next week's gala is better.
My take on the January 23 Gala:
Meenali and Yashashree were the weakest of the five. I'll give credit to Meenal for picking a difficult song but she wasn't good today. I know many people don't respect Farah's opinion (I don't either at times) but she absoultely right when she said Meenal wasn't enjoying herself when singing. This was evident in both her singing and performing. She was weak in both categories. No voice modulation, she lacked the punch needed in the main line 'Hoye Ishq samandar Dil de andar, Ishq samandar Dil De Andar'. There was hardly any emotion present in both her voice or face. She sounded exhausted, to be frank. Meenal was one of my favorites from the galas but she really disappointed me with her performance today and I can't lie and say she was great. It kills me to say this but I think she'll be out tomorrow. 😭 😭
I don't even want to comment on Yashashree's performance. But I'll say she picked a good song, Jiya Jale, to suit her personality and voice. But was went off tune in many places and her performance was forced. She isn't comfortable singing on stage. Don't know how she'll make it to the next gala though I think she has a nice voice. Her humble nature and words will probably garner her enough votes to be back next week. Anyway, let's see what happens.
Monali picked a great song for the theme of the episode, 'Sandese Aate Hain'. But unlike Karyuna, she didn't impress me with her singing or variations though her performance and facial expressions were worthy of praise. But why on earth was she dancing on such a patriotic song?! Don't recall where, but she started dancing and it didn't make sense. Sonu didn't like her choice of song, right? Maybe its because the song is sung by him, same issue as with Karyuna in the last gala. Moreover, Sonu Nigam prefers female singers choosing songs originally sung by female singers. He mentioned that to Neha in the piano round when she sang 'Bheegay Hote'. Vinit sang Sandese Aate Hain waaaaaay better than Monali, no doubt.
Neha Kakkar...she played safe and sang yet another item number. But there's no point in experimenting if you're going to falter and Neha knows this very well. She was good today, exceeded my expectations. Yes, she did overperform a bit and isn't the greatest singer. But her stage presence and ability to perform without any inhibitions put her ahead of Meenal & Yashashree. She brought her personality into the song, especially in the line 'Mujhe Mast Mahol Mein Jeena De'. She was the 'Panna' of tonight's gala. 👍🏼
Antara sang yet anothr Urmila number. Maybe we should give her a title- 'Main Urmila Matondkar Banna Chahti Hoon' 😆 Just kidding. She was probably the best tonight. She's def got the voice of a diva, her range is great and she expressed the lyrics of the song with her voice- like the line 'Ruki Ruki' with the slight pause btw the two words. Like Neha, she overperformed but I think she proved tonight that her potential is truly above the others. I just hope she picks a non-Urmila song in the next Gala (she'll be back). 👏
